a+b=b+a,(a+b)+c=a+(b+c)
뺄셈과 덧셈은 서로를 되돌린다. a−b=c라면 c+b=a다.
Goals
Explain carrying and borrowing as the place-value agreement "ten of these make one of the next" in action, and add and subtract large numbers in columns.
Explain the commutative and associative laws of addition with a picture, and use them to make computations easier.
Check a subtraction with an addition, and an addition with a subtraction or an estimate.
Compute mentally using complements and the fact that a difference does not change when both numbers shift together.
Add like places to like places
Think of 47+25 in beads. 47 is 4 bundles of ten and 7 loose beads; 25 is 2 bundles and 5 loose. Together that is 6 bundles and 12 loose beads, and since the loose beads have passed ten, we tie ten of them into a new bundle: 7 bundles and 2 loose, that is, 72.
47 + 25: ten of the 12 loose units are tied into a new rod, leaving 7 rods and 2 units.
Column addition is that process on paper. We line the two numbers up at the right so that equal places (bundles of equal size) sit one above the other. When the ones place gives 7+5=12, we keep the 2 and send the 10 up to the tens place as a single 1. That is a carry, and it is nothing but the place-value agreement "ten of these make one of the next."
Check: the estimate 3,500+2,700=6,200 says the answer should be nearby, and 6,173 is ✓. Adding in the other order, 2,695+3,478, also gives 6,173 ✓.
Watch out
The classic slip is dropping a carried 1 in the next column. Whenever a carry appears, write a small 1 above the next place and remember that the next column adds three numbers, not two.
Two laws of addition
When you combine two piles of beads, it does not matter which pile you pick up first, so 47+25=25+47. With three piles, combining the first two first or the last two first leaves the same number of beads at the end. These two facts have names.
DefinitionCommutative and associative laws
For any numbers a,b,c,
a+b=b+a,(a+b)+c=a+(b+c).
The first is the commutative law (the order may be swapped); the second is the associative law (the grouping may be changed). Together they say that when you add several numbers, any order and any grouping give the same result.
These laws are a license to make computations easier. Adding 37+85+63 from the left forces two carries, but pairing 37 with 63 first gives 100, and then 100+85=185. Two numbers that add to 10 or 100 are called complements of each other: 1 and 9, 2 and 8, 37 and 63.
Example 2 · Borrow, then pay back
Compute 198+457 in your head.
Solution.198 is 2 short of 200. Add 200, then give back the extra 2:
198+457=200+457−2=657−2=655.
Check in columns: 8+7=15, 9+5+1=15, 1+4+1=6, giving 655 ✓.
The two faces of subtraction
The subtraction 62−47 can be read two ways. One is taking away: start with 62 beads, remove 47, how many remain? The other is difference: how far apart are 47 and 62? On the number line, the difference is the distance between the two numbers, and you can measure a distance by hopping. From 47 to 50 is 3, to 60 is 10 more, to 62 is 2 more: 3+10+2=15.
The distance from 47 to 62 on the number line: three hops of 3, 10, and 2 make 15.
Column subtraction follows the taking-away picture. In the ones place you cannot take 7 beads from 2, so you untie one bundle of ten into ten loose beads. Now there are 12 loose beads, 12−7=5, and of the remaining 5 bundles you take 4, leaving 1. Answer: 15. Untying a bundle is borrowing. It is the exact reverse of carrying, and it rests on the same fact: one bundle equals ten loose beads.
51262−4715
Example 3 · Borrowing across zeros
Compute 5,003−2,748.
Solution. In the ones place, 8 cannot be taken from 3, and both the tens and the hundreds are 0, so there is nothing next door to borrow from. Untie one thousand into 10 hundreds; untie one of those into 10 tens; untie one of those into 10 ones. Now 5,003 is rewritten as 4 thousands, 9 hundreds, 9 tens, and 13 ones:
5,003=4,000+900+90+13.
Subtract place by place: 13−8=5, 9−4=5, 9−7=2, 4−2=2. Answer: 2,255.
Subtraction and addition undo each other. If a−b=c, then c+b=a, because putting back what you took away restores the original amount. So the check for a subtraction is to add the subtracted number to the answer and see whether the original comes back, which is exactly what Example 3 did. An addition can be checked two ways: add again in the other order, or subtract one addend from the sum and see whether the other appears. Either way, the check is not a repeat of the same computation but a different computation aiming at the same answer, which makes repeating the same mistake far less likely.
Example 4 · Computation and check as one package
Compute 7,214−3,869 and check it.
Solution. Ones: 4−9 needs a borrow, 14−9=5. Tens: now 0−6, borrow again, 10−6=4. Hundreds: now 1−8, borrow again, 11−8=3. Thousands: 6−3=3. Answer: 3,345.
Check: 3,345+3,869: 5+9=14, 4+6+1=11, 3+8+1=12, 3+3+1=7, giving 7,214 ✓. The estimate 7,200−3,900=3,300 agrees too ✓.
A difference survives a shift
On the number line, move both 47 and 62 three steps to the right: they become 50 and 65. The two points moved together, so the distance between them is still 15. That is,
62−47=65−50=15.
Adding the same number to both numbers, or subtracting the same number from both, leaves the difference unchanged. This is the tool for getting rid of borrowing. Computing 1,000−387 means borrowing in every place, but take 1 from both numbers and
1,000−387=999−386=613,
where 999 never needs to borrow. In the other direction, 83−29 is easier if the subtracted number is rounded up to 30: 83−30=53, and since we took away 1 too many, give it back: 54. Same property, used the other way around.
Note
Mental arithmetic comes down to two moves. Use complements to build 10,100,1,000 and tidy up the places; and add and subtract the same amount, or shift both numbers together, to turn a computation into an easier one. Knowing why each move is legal is what lets you invent your own variations when a new situation comes up.
Minseo computed 9,152−3,876=5,376. Check it with an addition, decide whether it is right, and if not, find the correct answer.
Answer & solution
5,376+3,876=9,252=9,152.
Answer · Wrong: 5,376+3,876=9,252=9,152. The correct answer is 5,276.
To check a subtraction, add the subtracted number back to the answer. 5,376+3,876: 6+6=12, 7+7+1=15, 3+8+1=12, 5+3+1=9, giving 9,252. That is 100 more than the original 9,152, so Minseo's answer is 100 too big and the correct answer is 5,276. The slip: after lending 1 from the hundreds place, she forgot to subtract it there.
Jiho went out with 25,000 won and spent 7,850 won at a stationery shop and 12,400 won at a bookstore. How much is left? Compute it in two different orders and confirm the answers agree.
Answer & solution
Answer · 4,750 won
Route 1: subtract one at a time.25,000−7,850=17,150, then 17,150−12,400=4,750.
Route 2: total the spending first.7,850+12,400=20,250, then 25,000−20,250=4,750.
Both routes land on 4,750 won. Subtracting two amounts one after the other is the same as subtracting their sum at once.
Check: 4,750+20,250=25,000 ✓.

Ones: 3−6 is impossible, so borrow from the tens: 13−6=7 ✓. The tens digit 0 has to lend that 1, so it borrows from the hundreds and becomes 10−1=9; then 9−□=4 gives the bottom box 5.
Hundreds: the top box lent 1 to the tens, leaving □−1. If (□−1)−8=3, then □=12, not a digit. So the hundreds must borrow from the thousands: (□−1+10)−8=3, giving □=2.

Explain, using the number line, why "adding the same number to both numbers in a subtraction, or subtracting the same number from both, leaves the difference unchanged." Then use the property to compute 6,000−2,345 without any borrowing.
Solution & grading notes
두 수 a와 b(a가 큼)를 수직선에 찍으면 차 a−b는 두 점 사이의 거리다.
Mark two numbers a and b (with a the larger) on the number line; the difference a−b is the distance between the two points. Move both points k steps to the right and they become a+k and b+k, but since they moved together, the distance between them is unchanged. Moving both to the left works the same way. Hence
(a+k)−(b+k)=a−b,(a−k)−(b−k)=a−b.
Computation: take 1 from both numbers, so 6,000−2,345=5,999−2,344. Place by place, 9−4=5, 9−4=5, 9−3=6, 5−2=3, giving 3,655.
Check: 3,655+2,345=6,000 ✓.
Rubric (any logically correct solution earns full credit). ① Explaining that the difference is the distance between two points and that moving both points together keeps the distance: base credit. ② Covering both the adding and the subtracting case: more credit. ③ Correctly computing 5,999−2,344=3,655 with a check: full credit. The sum 1 through 100 goes quickly if you pair the first number with the last, the second with the second-to-last, and so on. What is each pair worth, and how many pairs are there?
First, 1+2+⋯+100. Pairing from both ends, 1+100, 2+99, 3+98, …, 50+51 gives 50 pairs each worth 101, so the sum is 101×50=5,050 (fifty copies of 101).
Next, 1+2+⋯+99 is that sum minus 100: 4,950.
Together: 5,050+4,950=10,000.
Check by a different count. Write the rising part 1+⋯+100 above the falling part 99+⋯+1 and pair vertically: 1+99, 2+98, …, 99+1 are 99 pairs worth 100 each, with the lone 100 left over. That is 100×99+100=100×100=10,000 ✓. It is no accident that the sum is 100×100: lay out dots in rows of 1,2,…,100,…,2,1 and you get a square turned 45°, holding 100×100 dots.
