100=4×25100 = 4 \times 25다. 그래서 100100의 배수는 전부 44의 배수이자 2525의 배수다. 이번에는 수를 "100100의 배수 ++ 끝 두 자리"로 자른다.

7,236=7,200+36=72×100+36.7{,}236 = 7{,}200 + 36 = 72 \times 100 + 36.

7,236=7×1,000+2×100+3×10+6.7{,}236 = 7 \times 1{,}000 + 2 \times 100 + 3 \times 10 + 6.

7,236=7×999+2×99+3×9+(7+2+3+6).7{,}236 = 7 \times 999 + 2 \times 99 + 3 \times 9 + (7 + 2 + 3 + 6).

33 (9×102,030=918,2709 \times 102{,}030 = 918{,}270) ✓.

6=2×36 = 2 \times 3이다. 22의 배수이면서 33의 배수인 수는 66의 배수다. 4,5184{,}518은 짝수이고 자릿수 합 181833의 배수이므로 66의 배수다(4,518=6×7534{,}518 = 6 \times 753). 같은 식으로 12124433으로, 15153355로, 45455599로 겹쳐 판정한다.

528=6×88528 = 6 \times 88, 558=6×93558 = 6 \times 93, 588=6×98588 = 6 \times 98 ✓.

Goals
  • Test for multiples of 2,5,102, 5, 10 by the last digit, of 44 and 2525 by the last two digits, and of 88 by the last three, and explain why each test works using place value.
  • Test for multiples of 33 and 99 by the digit sum, and explain why using the splits 10=9+110 = 9 + 1, 100=99+1100 = 99 + 1.
  • Combine two tests for numbers like 66, and tell when combining is not allowed.
  • Run the rules backwards to fill in missing digits and to find remainders.

Spotting multiples without dividing

To decide whether 7,2367{,}236 is a multiple of 99 you could divide, but it is enough to notice that the digit sum 7+2+3+6=187 + 2 + 3 + 6 = 18 is a multiple of 99. Shortcuts like this are divisibility rules. Memorized, they save time; understood, they can be bent to new uses. Knowing why a rule works lets you invent new rules, run a rule backwards to fill in a missing digit, and read off remainders. The tool for all of it is one line from last lesson: a multiple plus a multiple is a multiple.

The last-digit family: 2, 5, 10

Split 7,236=7,230+67{,}236 = 7{,}230 + 6. The front part, 7,230=723×107{,}230 = 723 \times 10, is a multiple of 1010, and since 10=2×510 = 2 \times 5 it is a multiple of 22 and of 55. So whether 7,2367{,}236 is a multiple of 22 depends only on whether the leftover 66 is, and 66 is, so 7,2367{,}236 is a multiple of 22. Likewise whether it is a multiple of 55 depends only on the 66, which is not a multiple of 55, so 7,2367{,}236 is not a multiple of 55.

Every number splits as "a multiple of 1010 plus its ones digit," so the same reasoning always applies.

DefinitionLast-digit tests
  • Multiple of 22: the ones digit is 0,2,4,60, 2, 4, 6, or 88 (the number is even).
  • Multiple of 55: the ones digit is 00 or 55.
  • Multiple of 1010: the ones digit is 00.

The last two digits, the last three: 4, 25, 8

100=4×25100 = 4 \times 25, so every multiple of 100100 is a multiple of 44 and of 2525. This time split a number as "a multiple of 100100 plus its last two digits."

7,236 = 7,200 + 36. The front part is a multiple of 100, hence of 4, so the test rests on the last two digits, 36. 7200 = 72 × 100 36 100 = 4 × 25 36 = 4 × 9 7236 = 7200 + 36
7,236 = 7,200 + 36. The front part is a multiple of 100, hence of 4, so the test rests on the last two digits, 36.

7,236=7,200+36=72×100+36.7{,}236 = 7{,}200 + 36 = 72 \times 100 + 36.

The front part 7,2007{,}200 is a multiple of 100100, hence of 44. So whether 7,2367{,}236 is a multiple of 44 depends only on the last two digits, 3636, and since 36=4×936 = 4 \times 9, it is. The test for 2525 looks at the same place: 3636 is not a multiple of 2525, so 7,2367{,}236 is not. A number is a multiple of 2525 exactly when its last two digits are 00,25,5000, 25, 50, or 7575.

Since 1,000=8×1251{,}000 = 8 \times 125, the test for 88 looks one digit further. Split as "a multiple of 1,0001{,}000 plus the last three digits": the front part is a multiple of 88, and the last three digits decide. 53,20853{,}208 ends in 208=8×26208 = 8 \times 26, so it is a multiple of 88. But 7,2367{,}236 ends in 236=8×29+4236 = 8 \times 29 + 4, so it is not. Being a multiple of 44 does not make a number a multiple of 88.

DefinitionLast-two-digit and last-three-digit tests
  • Multiple of 44: the last two digits form a multiple of 44 (0000 counts).
  • Multiple of 2525: the last two digits are 00,25,5000, 25, 50, or 7575.
  • Multiple of 88: the last three digits form a multiple of 88 (000000 counts).
Example 1 · The whole last-digit family at once

Of 2,4,5,82, 4, 5, 8, which divide 5,3165{,}316? Which divide 70,00070{,}000?

Solution. 5,3165{,}316: the ones digit 66 is even, so 22 divides it. The last two digits 16=4×416 = 4 \times 4, so 44 divides it. The ones digit is neither 00 nor 55, so 55 does not. The last three digits 316=8×39+4316 = 8 \times 39 + 4, so 88 does not.

70,00070{,}000: ones digit 00, so 22 and 55 divide it. Last two digits 0000, so 44 does. Last three digits 000000, so 88 does. All four divide it.

Check: 5,316=4×1,3295{,}316 = 4 \times 1{,}329 ✓, and 5,316÷8=6645{,}316 \div 8 = 664 remainder 44 ✓. 70,000=8×8,75070{,}000 = 8 \times 8{,}750 ✓.

The digit-sum family: 3, 9

The test for 99 does not look at the end of the number; it adds all the digits. To see why, take 7,2367{,}236 apart by place value:

7,236=7×1,000+2×100+3×10+6.7{,}236 = 7 \times 1{,}000 + 2 \times 100 + 3 \times 10 + 6.

Now rewrite 1,000=999+11{,}000 = 999 + 1, 100=99+1100 = 99 + 1, 10=9+110 = 9 + 1:

7,236=7×999+2×99+3×9+(7+2+3+6).7{,}236 = 7 \times 999 + 2 \times 99 + 3 \times 9 + (7 + 2 + 3 + 6).

7,236 split into 7 × 999 + 2 × 99 + 3 × 9 and the digit sum 18. The first three chunks are all multiples of 9. 7 × 1000 7 × 999 7 2 × 100 2 × 99 2 3 × 10 3 × 9 3 6 6 7236 = (7 × 999 + 2 × 99 + 3 × 9) + (7 + 2 + 3 + 6)
7,236 split into 7 × 999 + 2 × 99 + 3 × 9 and the digit sum 18. The first three chunks are all multiples of 9.

Since 999,99,9999, 99, 9 are all multiples of 99, the first three chunks are multiples of 99. So whether 7,2367{,}236 is a multiple of 99 depends only on the last chunk, the digit sum 1818, and 18=9×218 = 9 \times 2, so it is. However many digits a number has, each of 10,100,1,000,10, 100, 1{,}000, \ldots is one more than a multiple of 99, so the same split always works. And 999,99,9999, 99, 9 are multiples of 33 as well, so the test for 33 is the same digit sum.

DefinitionDigit-sum tests
  • Multiple of 33: the digit sum is a multiple of 33.
  • Multiple of 99: the digit sum is a multiple of 99.

As a bonus, the remainder when a number is divided by 99 (or by 33) equals the remainder of its digit sum divided by 99 (or 33), because the front chunks contribute nothing to the remainder.

Example 2 · Test and remainder

Is 918,273918{,}273 a multiple of 33? Of 99? What is its remainder on division by 99?

Solution. The digit sum is 9+1+8+2+7+3=309 + 1 + 8 + 2 + 7 + 3 = 30. Since 30=3×1030 = 3 \times 10, the number is a multiple of 33. Since 30=9×3+330 = 9 \times 3 + 3, it is not a multiple of 99, and its remainder on division by 99 is 33.

Check by dividing: 918,273÷9918{,}273 \div 9 gives quotient 102,030102{,}030 with remainder 33 (as 9×102,030=918,2709 \times 102{,}030 = 918{,}270) ✓.

Watch out

Do not mix the families. Testing for 44 with a digit sum, or for 33 with the last digit, is a common slip. 2,4,5,8,10,252, 4, 5, 8, 10, 25 are tested from the end (one, two, one, three, one, two digits respectively); 33 and 99 use all the digits. And a digit sum forgets the size of a number: 3636, 6363, and 3,6003{,}600 share a digit sum, so they agree about 99, but they disagree about 44.

Combining tests: 6, 12, 15

6=2×36 = 2 \times 3. A number that is a multiple of 22 and of 33 is a multiple of 66. 4,5184{,}518 is even and its digit sum 1818 is a multiple of 33, so it is a multiple of 66 (4,518=6×7534{,}518 = 6 \times 753). In the same way, 1212 is tested through 44 and 33, 1515 through 33 and 55, and 4545 through 55 and 99.

Watch out

Not every pair may be combined. 1212 is a multiple of 44 and a multiple of 66, yet it is not a multiple of 4×6=244 \times 6 = 24. The trouble is that 44 and 66 share the factor 22, so "multiple of 44" and "multiple of 66" each count that 22 once and overlap. Combining is safe only for two numbers with no common factor other than 11, like 22 and 33, 44 and 33, 33 and 55, 55 and 99. To test 2424, split it as 88 and 33 instead. The reason behind this condition comes in the GCF and LCM lesson.

Running a rule backwards

A rule answers not only "is this number a multiple?" but also "what must go in the blank to make it one?"

Example 3 · Filling a blank

Find every digit \square that makes the three-digit number 585\square8 a multiple of 66.

Solution. A multiple of 66 is a multiple of 22 and of 33. The ones digit is 88, so the 22 condition already holds. The 33 condition says the digit sum 5++8=13+5 + \square + 8 = 13 + \square must be a multiple of 33. With \square from 00 to 99, the sum runs from 1313 to 2222, and the multiples of 33 in that range are 15,18,2115, 18, 21. So =2,5,8\square = 2, 5, 8.

Check: 528=6×88528 = 6 \times 88, 558=6×93558 = 6 \times 93, 588=6×98588 = 6 \times 98 ✓.
