12=1×12=2×6=3×4.
자연수 a가 자연수 b로 나누어떨어질 때(나머지가 0일 때) b를 a의 약수, a를 b의 배수라고 한다.
12=3×4 한 줄이 네 문장을 담고 있다. 3은 12의 약수, 4도 12의 약수, 12는 3의 배수, 12는 4의 배수. 약수와 배수는 같은 곱셈을 두 방향에서 읽은 이름이다.
Goals
State what factors and multiples are in two ways: through division (remainder 0) and through multiplication (a=b×□).
Find all factors of a number in pairs, and explain why you only need to test numbers whose square does not exceed the number.
Prove that the only numbers with an odd number of factors are the perfect squares.
Explain why sums and differences of multiples are again multiples, and use that to decide whether a large number is a multiple.
Factors: the numbers that divide evenly
In how many ways can 12 dots be arranged in a solid rectangle? One row of 12, two rows of 6, three rows of 4, and the turned versions of these. A rectangle needs 12=(rows)×(dots per row), so the question is really: in how many ways can 12 be written as a product of two whole numbers?
Rectangles made of 12 dots: 1 × 12, 2 × 6, 3 × 4. The side lengths are the factors of 12.
12=1×12=2×6=3×4.
The numbers appearing here, 1,2,3,4,6,12, are the factors of 12. The number 5 is not a factor: 12 dots in 5 rows leave the last row short. In division language, 12÷5=2 R 2 has a remainder.
DefinitionFactors and multiples
When a whole number a is divided evenly by a whole number b (remainder 0), b is a factor of a and a is a multiple of b. In multiplication language, a=b×(a whole number).
1 is a factor of every whole number, and every whole number is a factor of itself.
The multiples of a number are 1 times it, 2 times it, 3 times it, and so on, without end.
The single line 12=3×4 carries four statements: 3 is a factor of 12, 4 is a factor of 12, 12 is a multiple of 3, 12 is a multiple of 4. Factor and multiple are the same multiplication read from two ends.
Finding factors in pairs
Let's find every factor of 36. Test 1,2,3,… in turn, but each time a factor turns up, write down its partner as well.
1×36,2×18,3×12,4×9,6×6.
The number 5 does not divide 36, so skip it; at 6×6 the two partners meet. May we stop here? Yes: nothing from 7 upward needs testing. Write 36=a×b with a the smaller of the two. Then a×a≤a×b=36, and since 7×7=49 already exceeds 36, the smaller partner must be at most 6. So the smaller member of every factor pair has already appeared among 1 through 6, and the larger member came along as its partner.
Pairing the factors of 36: 1 with 36, 2 with 18, 3 with 12, 4 with 9, and 6 paired with itself.
The factors of 36 are 1,2,3,4,6,9,12,18,36, nine of them.
DefinitionHow far to test
To find the factors of n, test only the numbers whose square does not exceed n. For each factor a found in that range, write its partner n÷a, and you have them all.
Example 1 · The factors of 72
Find all factors of 72.
Solution. Since 8×8=64≤72 and 9×9=81>72, test only up to 8. Dividing 72 by 1,2,3,4,6,8 comes out even; by 5 and 7 it does not.
1×72,2×36,3×24,4×18,6×12,8×9.
The factors are 1,2,3,4,6,8,9,12,18,24,36,72, twelve in all.
Check: each pair multiplies to 72: 2×36, 3×24, 4×18, 6×12, 8×9 ✓. Nothing is missing: 5 and 7 do not divide 72 (72=5×14+2, 72=7×10+2), so neither do their would-be partners ✓.
Numbers with an odd number of factors
36 had 9 factors, an odd number; 72 had 12, an even number. The picture already explains the difference. Factors come in pairs, so normally there is an even number of them. But when a number is paired with itself, as in 36=6×6, that factor is counted only once, and the total becomes odd. A factor a paired with itself means exactly that n=a×a.
DefinitionPerfect squares
Numbers obtained by multiplying a whole number by itself, 1,4,9,16,25,36,…, are perfect squares. They are the dot counts that can be arranged in a square.
Therefore the only numbers with an odd number of factors are the perfect squares, and every perfect square has an odd number of factors. The proof is exactly the pairing argument: if n is not a square, every factor has a distinct partner and the count is even; if n=a×a, then a alone stands unpaired and the count is odd.
Example 2 · Picking numbers by their factor count
Find every whole number from 1 through 50 that has an odd number of factors.
Solution. We need the perfect squares. 1×1,2×2,…,7×7 give 1,4,9,16,25,36,49, and 8×8=64 is past 50. Those seven are the answer.
Check one directly: the factors of 16 are 1,2,4,8,16, five of them, odd ✓. The non-square 18 has factors 1,2,3,6,9,18, six of them, even ✓.
A property of multiples: sums and differences
Add the multiples of 7, 21 and 35, and you get 56=7×8, another multiple of 7. Not a coincidence. Since 21=7×3 and 35=7×5, the distributive law gives
21+35=7×3+7×5=7×(3+5)=7×8.
Subtraction works the same way: 35−21=7×(5−3)=7×2. In general, adding or subtracting two multiples of b gives another multiple of b. And a multiple of b times any whole number is still a multiple of b, since 7×3 times 4 is 7×12.
This property earns its keep on large numbers. Is 119 a multiple of 7? Since 119=70+49 and both 70 and 49 are multiples of 7, so is 119 (indeed 119=7×17). What about 250? Here 250=245+5, where 245=7×35 is a multiple of 7 and 5 is not. A multiple plus a non-multiple can never be a multiple (if 250 were a multiple of 7, then 250−245=5 would have to be one too), so 250 is not a multiple of 7.
Example 3 · Deciding by subtracting
Is 1,001 a multiple of 7?
Solution. Peel off multiples of 7 that are easy to see. Subtract 700 to get 301; subtract 280 to get 21. Since 21=7×3 is a multiple of 7, and everything we removed was too, 1,001 is a multiple of 7.
Check: 1,001=700+280+21=7×(100+40+3)=7×143 ✓.
Note
"Sums and differences of multiples are multiples" underlies next lesson's divisibility rules and, later, the computation of greatest common factors. Its whole justification is one line of the distributive law, which is worth keeping in mind.
Only perfect squares have an odd number of factors. From 1×1 up to 10×10=100 the squares are 1,4,9,16,25,36,49,64,81,100, ten of them, and 11×11=121 is past 100.
Check: the factors of 100 are 1,2,4,5,10,20,25,50,100, nine of them, odd ✓ (the pair 10×10 is counted once).

Find all factors of 200. First say how far you need to test.
Answer & solution
Answer · Test up to 14. Factors: 1,2,4,5,8,10,20,25,40,50,100,200 — twelve of them
Since 14×14=196≤200<225=15×15, test up to 14. Among 1 through 14, the numbers dividing 200 are 1,2,4,5,8,10 (while 3,6,7,9,11,12,13,14 leave remainders).
1×200,2×100,4×50,5×40,8×25,10×20.
The factors are 1,2,4,5,8,10,20,25,40,50,100,200, twelve in all.
Check: 200 is not a perfect square, so the count is even ✓. And 8×25=200, 5×40=200 ✓.

(a) 119 (b) 203 (c) 250
By peeling off multiples of 7 that are easy to see, decide whether each number is a multiple of 7.
(a) 119 (b) 203 (c) 250
Answer & solution
Answer · (a) Yes (b) Yes (c) No
(a) 119−70=49=7×7.
(a) 119−70=49=7×7. The removed 70 and the leftover 49 are both multiples of 7, so 119 is one too (119=7×17).
(b) 203−140=63=7×9. So 203=7×29, a multiple of 7.
(c) 250−210=40, and 40−35=5. Since 5 is not a multiple of 7, neither is 250 (250=7×35+5).
Check:
(a)7×17=119 ✓.
(b)7×29=203 ✓.
(c)7×35=245 and 7×36=252, with 250 strictly between ✓.

Find every whole number from 2 through 20 that has exactly 2 factors.
Answer & solution
Answer · 2,3,5,7,11,13,17,19 — eight of them
Every number has 1 and itself as factors, so "exactly 2 factors" means no factors besides those two. Going through 2 to 20: 4=2×2, 6=2×3, and 8,9,10,12,14,15,16,18,20 all have extra factors, while 2,3,5,7,11,13,17,19 have none.
Check: 13 is divided evenly by none of 2,3,4,…; testing up to 3 suffices (3×3=9≤13<16), and both 2 and 3 fail ✓. And 15=3×5 has four factors, so it is rightly excluded ✓.

Three factors is an odd number of factors. Which numbers have that? What more is needed for the count to be exactly 3?
Answer & solution
Answer · 25 and 49
Three factors is an odd count, so the number must be a perfect square a×a. Its factors include 1,a,a×a, so for the count to be exactly 3 there must be no others. But if a had a factor d other than 1 and itself, d would also be a factor of a×a, pushing the count past 3. So a must have no factors except 1 and itself: a is one of 2,3,5,7,11,….
For a×a to have two digits, a=5 or 7 (since 4 and 9 are one-digit and 11×11=121 has three digits). The answer is 25 and 49.
Check: the factors of 25 are 1,5,25, three ✓; of 49, they are 1,7,49, three ✓. The other two-digit squares 16,36,64,81 have 5,9,7,5 factors respectively ✓.

1+2+4+7+14=28.

Prove that the only whole numbers with an odd number of factors are the perfect squares. Also explain why a perfect square always has an odd number of factors.
Solution & grading notes
For every factor a of n there is a partner b=n÷a, and since a×b=n, the partner b is a factor of n as well. So the factors can be grouped into pairs (a,b).
When n is not a perfect square. No factor can be its own partner, because a=b would mean n=a×a, a perfect square. So every factor is paired with a different factor, two by two, and the number of factors is even.
When n=a×a is a perfect square. The factor a is its own partner and stands alone, while all the other factors are still paired off two by two. So the count is (an even number) +1, which is odd. Moreover, no factor besides a can be its own partner (if c×c=n=a×a then c=a).
Putting the two cases together: the factor count is odd exactly when n is a perfect square.
Rubric (any logically correct solution earns full credit). ① The idea of pairing each factor a with n÷a: base credit. ② Showing that a non-square has no self-paired factor, hence an even count: more credit. ③ Showing that a square has exactly one self-paired factor, hence an odd count: full credit. Working only through examples like 36 and 72 illustrates but does not prove, so partial credit.

A hallway has 100 lockers numbered 1 through 100, all closed. Then 100 students walk by in turn. Student 1 opens every locker. Student 2 toggles every locker whose number is a multiple of 2 (closing open ones and opening closed ones). Student 3 toggles every multiple of 3, and in general student k toggles every locker whose number is a multiple of k. After student 100 has passed, how many lockers are open?
힌트Hint
How many times does locker 12 get touched? Write down the numbers of the students who touch it. How are those numbers related to 12?
Answer & solution
Answer · 10 lockers
Locker n is toggled once by each student whose number is a factor of n. Locker 12, for instance, is touched by students 1,2,3,4,6,12, six toggles in all. Starting closed, an even number of toggles leaves it closed and an odd number leaves it open.
So the lockers open at the end are exactly those whose numbers have an odd number of factors, that is, the perfect squares. The perfect squares up to 100 are 1,4,9,16,25,36,49,64,81,100, ten of them, so the answer is 10.
Check: locker 16 is touched by students 1,2,4,8,16, five toggles: closed → open → closed → open → closed → open, ending open ✓. Locker 12 gets six toggles and ends closed ✓.
