영어는 세 자리마다 새 이름이 붙는다. thousand(1,0001{,}000), million(1,0001{,}000 thousand), billion(1,0001{,}000 million).

10,00010{,}000 1만 ten thousand
1 million
100 million
1 billion
1 trillion

1 billion, 234 million, 567 thousand, 890".

2500000025|000|000 — "twenty-five million".

Goals
  • Know that each place in a whole number is worth ten times the place to its right, and write a number in expanded form.
  • Read and write large numbers both ways: in groups of three (thousand, million) as English does, and in groups of four (만, 억) as Korean does.
  • Compare two whole numbers by digit count and by the leftmost differing digit, and explain why that works.
  • Round a number to any place, round up or down when the situation demands it, and use an estimate to check the size of an answer.

Ten symbols, every number

The symbols we write numbers with are just ten: 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,90, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. These are the digits. With only ten of them we can write 305,048305{,}048, and numbers as large as we like. The trick is not in the symbols but in where each one stands.

Start with counting. Count beads one at a time; when you reach ten, tie them into a bundle. When you have ten bundles, tie those into a bigger bundle of a hundred; ten of those make a thousand. That single agreement, "ten of these make one of the next," is the whole system. It most likely began with ten fingers.

A single unit, a rod of ten, a flat of one hundred. Each step to the left is worth ten times more. 100 ×10 10 ×10 1
A single unit, a rod of ten, a flat of one hundred. Each step to the left is worth ten times more.
DefinitionPlace value

Every position in a written number carries a fixed value. The rightmost position is the ones place (11), then the tens (1010), the hundreds (100100), the thousands (1,0001{,}000), the ten-thousands (10,00010{,}000), and so on. Each place is worth ten times the place to its right. A digit tells you how many of that place's value you have.

The same digit means different things in different places. In 305,048305{,}048, the 44 stands in the tens place, so it is worth 4040; the 55 stands in the thousands place, so it is worth 5,0005{,}000; the 33 stands in the hundred-thousands place, worth 300,000300{,}000. Writing all of that on one line gives the expanded form:

305,048=300,000+5,000+40+8.305{,}048 = 300{,}000 + 5{,}000 + 40 + 8.

Place-value chart: where each digit of 305,048 stands and what it is worth. 100000 3 300000 10000 0 0 1000 5 5000 100 0 0 10 4 40 1 8 8
Place-value chart: where each digit of 305,048 stands and what it is worth.

The places holding a 00 (ten-thousands, hundreds) mean "none of that bundle," so they don't show up in the sum. But you cannot leave them out of the number. Erase the two zeros from 305,048305{,}048 and you get 3,5483{,}548, a completely different number. A zero's job is to hold its place: if an empty place were simply left blank, every digit to its left would slide down and change its value.

Watch out

Taking dictation of "three hundred five thousand, forty-eight," people often write 3,5483{,}548 or 30,54830{,}548 instead of 305,048305{,}048, because the empty places are never spoken aloud. Draw six empty slots first, fill the places you hear, then put a 00 in every slot that is still empty.

Example 1 · What a digit is worth

In 7,270,3057{,}270{,}305, say what each of the two 77s is worth, then write the number in expanded form.

Solution. The left 77 stands in the millions place, so it is worth 7,000,0007{,}000{,}000; the right 77 stands in the ten-thousands place, worth 70,00070{,}000. Same digit, values 100100 times apart, because two places apart means ten times ten.

7,270,305=7,000,000+200,000+70,000+300+5.7{,}270{,}305 = 7{,}000{,}000 + 200{,}000 + 70{,}000 + 300 + 5.

Check by adding from the right: 5, 305, 70,305, 270,305, 7,270,3055,\ 305,\ 70{,}305,\ 270{,}305,\ 7{,}270{,}305 ✓.

Reading large numbers: groups of three and groups of four

Languages name big numbers differently. English attaches a new name every three places: thousand (1,0001{,}000), million (a thousand thousands), billion (a thousand millions). Korean attaches a new name every four places: 만 (10,00010{,}000), 억 (ten thousand 만), 조 (ten thousand 억). The commas we write between digits mark the English three-place grouping, which is exactly why reading Korean straight off the commas keeps going wrong.

Number English (threes) Korean (fours)
10,00010{,}000 ten thousand 1만
1,000,0001{,}000{,}000 1 million 100만
100,000,000100{,}000{,}000 100 million 1억
1,000,000,0001{,}000{,}000{,}000 1 billion 10억
1,000,000,000,0001{,}000{,}000{,}000{,}000 1 trillion 1조

To read in Korean, ignore the commas and cut the number into fours from the right: 1,234,567,8901{,}234{,}567{,}890 becomes 123456789012|3456|7890, "12억 3456만 7890." In English, read the commas as they stand: "1 billion, 234 million, 567 thousand, 890."

Watch out

One billion is 10억, not 1조. Because the two systems attach new names at different intervals (threes versus fours), their names do not pair up one-for-one. A "50억 달러" headline is 5 billion dollars; "3 million" is 300만.

Example 2 · Reading both ways
(1)Read 25,000,00025{,}000{,}000 in Korean and in English.
(2)Write "thirty-five million" in digits.

Solution. (1) In fours: 250000002500|0000, that is 2500만, "이천오백만." In threes: 2500000025|000|000, "twenty-five million."

(2) Thirty-five million is 3535 followed by six zeros: 35,000,00035{,}000{,}000.

Check: cut 35,000,00035{,}000{,}000 into fours, 350000003500|0000, and it reads 3500만, which is thirty-five million again ✓.

Comparing sizes

Deciding which of two whole numbers is larger takes two rules.

First, more digits wins. Any four-digit number beats any three-digit number. The reason is short: the smallest four-digit number, 1,0001{,}000, already beats the largest three-digit number, 999999. The same argument works for any number of digits. The moment a new place appears, a single 11 in it outweighs every lower place filled with 99s.

Second, with the same number of digits, compare from the left, and the first place where they differ decides. Take 48,90548{,}905 and 48,95048{,}950. The ten-thousands, thousands, and hundreds agree; the tens place splits them, 00 against 55. The number that lost in the tens place cannot catch up in the ones place: the gap in the tens is at least 1010, and the ones place only goes up to 99. So 48,905<48,95048{,}905 < 48{,}950.

Example 3 · Putting numbers in order

Arrange 205,310205{,}310, 98,76598{,}765, 205,301205{,}301, 1,000,0001{,}000{,}000 from largest to smallest.

Solution. Count digits first. 1,000,0001{,}000{,}000 has seven digits, the most; 98,76598{,}765 has five, the fewest. The two six-digit numbers agree up to 205,3205{,}3 and split in the tens place, 11 against 00, so 205,310205{,}310 is the larger.

1,000,000>205,310>205,301>98,765.1{,}000{,}000 > 205{,}310 > 205{,}301 > 98{,}765.

Check: 98,76598{,}765 is built from big digits, but it has only five of them. Don't be fooled by big-looking digits; count places first ✓.

Estimating: rounding, rounding up, rounding down

A population of 51,784,20151{,}784{,}201 appears in the news as "about 52 million." Replacing an exact number with a nearby number that is easier to handle is called estimating. There are three kinds, and they differ only in which direction they move.

Rounding goes to the nearest candidate. Round 3,7163{,}716 to the nearest hundred: the candidates are 3,7003{,}700 and 3,8003{,}800, and 3,7163{,}716 is 1616 away from the first and 8484 away from the second. The nearer one is 3,7003{,}700.

The number line from 3,700 to 3,800. 3,716 sits much closer to 3,700. 3700 3710 3720 3730 3740 3750 3760 3770 3780 3790 3800 3716 16 84
The number line from 3,700 to 3,800. 3,716 sits much closer to 3,700.

You don't have to measure both distances every time. The halfway point between the candidates is 3,7503{,}750, so a tens digit of 55 or more means the upper candidate is nearer and 44 or less means the lower one is. That is all the "5 or more rounds up" rule is saying. Exactly halfway (3,7503{,}750) is the same distance from both; there we agree to round up.

DefinitionRounding

To round to a given place, look at the digit just to its right. If it is 55 or more, increase the digit in the given place by 11 (a 99 becomes 00 and carries 11 to the left); if it is 44 or less, leave it alone. Then replace every digit to the right with 00.

Rounding up always moves up; rounding down always moves down. The situation chooses. If 4343 students ride 2020-seat buses, two buses leave 33 people standing, so three are needed (up). If 4343 pencils are sold in boxes of 1010, four boxes can be sold and 33 pencils are left over (down).

Example 4 · Rounding to different places

Round 736,482736{,}482 (1) to the nearest ten thousand, (2) to the nearest thousand.

Solution. (1) The ten-thousands digit is 33; the digit to its right, in the thousands, is 66. That's 55 or more, so 33 becomes 44 and the rest turn into zeros: 740,000740{,}000.

(2) The thousands digit is 66; the digit to its right, in the hundreds, is 44. That's 44 or less, so 66 stays: 736,000736{,}000.

Check:

(1)736,482736{,}482 is 3,5183{,}518 from 740,000740{,}000 and 6,4826{,}482 from 730,000730{,}000, so 740,000740{,}000 is nearer ✓.
(2)It is 482482 from 736,000736{,}000 and 518518 from 737,000737{,}000, so 736,000736{,}000 is nearer ✓.
Watch out

Round in one step. Rounding 736,482736{,}482 to the nearest thousand by first rounding to the nearest hundred (736,500736{,}500) and then rounding that to the nearest thousand (737,000737{,}000) gives the wrong answer: 736,482736{,}482 is nearer to 736,000736{,}000 than to 737,000737{,}000. Only the single digit to the right matters.

An estimate is a checking tool

The biggest use of an estimate is knowing the size of an answer before you compute it. Before working out 398×52398 \times 52, note that it is about 400×50=20,000400 \times 50 = 20{,}000. Then if the computation produces 2,6962{,}696, you can see at once that a digit has gone missing. The true value is 20,69620{,}696. Estimate the size of the answer in one line before you start and compare when you finish; this habit travels with every calculation from here on.
