12÷3=43×4=12.12 \div 3 = 4 \quad\Longleftrightarrow\quad 3 \times 4 = 12.

a=b×q+r,0r<ba = b \times q + r, \qquad 0 \le r < b

351=13×20+13×7=13×27.351 = 13 \times 20 + 13 \times 7 = 13 \times 27.

2713)35126091910\begin{array}{r} 2\,7 \\ 13\overline{\smash{)}\,3\,5\,1} \\ 2\,6\phantom{\,0} \\ \hline 9\,1 \\ 9\,1 \\ \hline 0 \end{array}

4097)28672800600067634\begin{array}{r} 4\,0\,9 \\ 7\overline{\smash{)}\,2\,8\,6\,7} \\ 2\,8\phantom{\,0\,0} \\ \hline 6\phantom{\,0} \\ 0\phantom{\,0} \\ \hline 6\,7 \\ 6\,3 \\ \hline 4 \end{array}

12434)421834008106801381362\begin{array}{r} 1\,2\,4 \\ 34\overline{\smash{)}\,4\,2\,1\,8} \\ 3\,4\phantom{\,0\,0} \\ \hline 8\,1\phantom{\,0} \\ 6\,8\phantom{\,0} \\ \hline 1\,3\,8 \\ 1\,3\,6 \\ \hline 2 \end{array}

Goals
  • Read a division two ways, as sharing equally and as counting groups, and see that division asks a multiplication question backwards.
  • Know what the quotient and remainder mean, and check a division with (divisor)×(quotient)+(remainder)=(dividend)(\text{divisor}) \times (\text{quotient}) + (\text{remainder}) = (\text{dividend}).
  • See long division as "take away as much as possible, starting from the highest place," and divide by two-digit divisors.
  • Explain why dividing by 00 is not allowed, and interpret the quotient and remainder in the context of a problem.

The two faces of division

Share 1212 candies equally among 33 people and each gets 44. Pack 1212 candies into bags of 33 and you fill 44 bags. The first is sharing (how many each?), the second is grouping (how many groups?), and both are written 12÷3=412 \div 3 = 4. Telling which question a word problem is asking is the first step in solving it.

Both questions are really a multiplication asked backwards: "33 times what makes 1212?" The answer, 44, is the answer to the division.

12÷3=43×4=12.12 \div 3 = 4 \quad\Longleftrightarrow\quad 3 \times 4 = 12.

If you can read the multiplication table backwards, small divisions are done, and this is also why the check for a division is a multiplication.

Remainders

Now suppose there are 1414 candies. Bags of 44 give 33 full bags with 22 candies left over, and the 22 leftovers cannot fill another bag.

Fourteen candies in groups of 4: three full groups and 2 left over. 14 ÷ 4 = 3 … 2 2 14 = 4 × 3 + 2
Fourteen candies in groups of 4: three full groups and 2 left over.

Here 33 is the quotient and 22 is the remainder, written 14÷4=3 R 214 \div 4 = 3 \text{ R } 2. Translating the situation into a multiplication and an addition gives the check.

DefinitionQuotient and remainder

Dividing aa by bb with quotient qq and remainder rr means

a=b×q+r,0r<b.a = b \times q + r, \qquad 0 \le r < b.

When the remainder is 00, we say bb divides aa evenly.

The second condition matters. The remainder must be smaller than the divisor. A remainder of 44 or more would mean another bag could have been filled, so the quotient was not counted fully. Writing 14=4×2+614 = 4 \times 2 + 6 is a true equation, but the remainder 66 exceeds 44, so the quotient 22 is wrong.

Watch out

Do not stop at the equation. Answering 23÷523 \div 5 with "quotient 33, remainder 88" still satisfies 5×3+8=235 \times 3 + 8 = 23. A proper check asks two things: does the equation hold, and is the remainder smaller than the divisor? The correct answer is quotient 44, remainder 33.

Long division: take away as much as you can, from the top

For something like 351÷13351 \div 13 the multiplication table is no help. The principle: take 1313s away from 351351 in the biggest chunks you can, starting with the highest place.

Begin with the tens. How many bundles of ten 1313s can be removed? 13×20=26013 \times 20 = 260 fits, but 13×30=39013 \times 30 = 390 exceeds 351351. So remove twenty of them, leaving 351260=91351 - 260 = 91. Now how many single 1313s can be removed? 13×7=9113 \times 7 = 91, so exactly seven. In total, 2727 of them, with nothing left.

Take twenty 13s from 351 and 91 remains; take seven more and 0 remains. 13 × 20 = 260 13 × 7 = 91 351 = 13 × 27
Take twenty 13s from 351 and 91 remains; take seven more and 0 remains.

351=13×20+13×7=13×27.351 = 13 \times 20 + 13 \times 7 = 13 \times 27.

That last line is the distributive law. Where multiplication cut 2727 into 20+720 + 7 and multiplied each part, division retraces those steps. The written algorithm is a shorthand for this, recording one digit per place.

2713)35126091910\begin{array}{r} 2\,7 \\ 13\overline{\smash{)}\,3\,5\,1} \\ 2\,6\phantom{\,0} \\ \hline 9\,1 \\ 9\,1 \\ \hline 0 \end{array}

How to read it: the hundreds digit 33 is less than 1313, so nothing can be removed there. Including the tens gives 3535 (thirty-five tens); remove 1313 twice (2626), and next to the leftover 99 bring down the ones digit 11 to make 9191. Remove 1313 seven times from 9191 and 00 remains. The quotient, written on top, is 2727.

Example 1 · A zero in the middle of the quotient

Compute 2,867÷72{,}867 \div 7 and check.

Solution. The thousands digit 22 is less than 77. From 2828, remove 77 four times, leaving 00. Bring down the hundreds digit 66: that is 66, less than 77, so not a single 77 can be removed, and the quotient must get a 00 here. Bring down the ones digit 77 to make 6767; remove 77 nine times (6363), remainder 44.

4097)28672800600067634\begin{array}{r} 4\,0\,9 \\ 7\overline{\smash{)}\,2\,8\,6\,7} \\ 2\,8\phantom{\,0\,0} \\ \hline 6\phantom{\,0} \\ 0\phantom{\,0} \\ \hline 6\,7 \\ 6\,3 \\ \hline 4 \end{array}

Quotient 409409, remainder 44.

Check: 7×409+4=2,863+4=2,8677 \times 409 + 4 = 2{,}863 + 4 = 2{,}867 ✓, and 4<74 < 7 ✓. The estimate 2,800÷7=4002{,}800 \div 7 = 400 agrees ✓.

Watch out

Dropping the 00 in Example 1 and writing 4949 is one of the most common mistakes in all of arithmetic. When a brought-down digit is smaller than the divisor, it means "zero of them were removed at this place," so write a 00 and bring down the next digit. An estimate catches the slip: if 2,867÷72{,}867 \div 7 were 4949, then 7×497 \times 49 would be only 343343.

Example 2 · A two-digit divisor

Compute 4,218÷344{,}218 \div 34 and check.

Solution. With a two-digit divisor, the quotient digits are hard to see at a glance, so estimate and adjust. From 4242, remove 3434 once (3434), leaving 88; bring down 11 to make 8181. From 8181, 3434 goes twice (6868), since three times would be 102102, too much. Leftover 1313; bring down 88 to make 138138. Now 138÷34138 \div 34 is about 140÷35=4140 \div 35 = 4, so try four times (136136): remainder 22.

12434)421834008106801381362\begin{array}{r} 1\,2\,4 \\ 34\overline{\smash{)}\,4\,2\,1\,8} \\ 3\,4\phantom{\,0\,0} \\ \hline 8\,1\phantom{\,0} \\ 6\,8\phantom{\,0} \\ \hline 1\,3\,8 \\ 1\,3\,6 \\ \hline 2 \end{array}

Quotient 124124, remainder 22.

Check: 34×124+2=4,216+2=4,21834 \times 124 + 2 = 4{,}216 + 2 = 4{,}218 ✓, and 2<342 < 34 ✓. The estimate 4,200÷30=1404{,}200 \div 30 = 140 is in the neighborhood ✓.

To estimate a quotient digit, round the divisor. In 138÷34138 \div 34, treating 3434 as 3030 suggests 138÷30138 \div 30 is about 44. If the trial product exceeds what is left, lower the digit by one; if the leftover after subtracting is still at least the divisor, raise it by one. Adjusting two or three times is normal, not a failure.

Why you cannot divide by zero

What is 12÷012 \div 0? Division asks a multiplication backwards, so the question is "00 times what makes 1212?" Since 00 times anything is 00, there is no such number. And 0÷00 \div 0? The question "00 times what makes 00?" is answered by every number, so no single value is picked out. Either no answer or too many answers; in both cases no one value can be assigned, so division by 00 is forbidden. On the other hand, 0÷5=00 \div 5 = 0 is perfectly fine, because 5×0=05 \times 0 = 0.

Reading the quotient and remainder

Finishing the computation does not finish the problem. The situation decides which number is the answer.

  • If 4343 students ride 2020-seat buses, then 43÷20=2 R 343 \div 20 = 2 \text{ R } 3, and the answer is 33 buses: the 33 leftover students need a ride too, so add 11 to the quotient.
  • If 4343 pencils are sold in bundles of 1010, the answer is 44 bundles; the 33 leftover pencils do not make a bundle.
  • If today is Tuesday and you want the day of the week 100100 days from now, then 100=7×14+2100 = 7 \times 14 + 2 and the answer lives in the remainder. Every 77 days the weekday returns to where it started, so the 1414 weeks can be ignored; moving 22 days on from Tuesday gives Thursday.
Example 3 · When the remainder is the answer

January 1 falls on a Wednesday this year. If this year has 365365 days, on what day of the week does next January 1 fall?

Solution. 365=7×52+1365 = 7 \times 52 + 1. After 5252 weeks the weekday is unchanged; the leftover 11 day pushes it forward by one. Next January 1 is the day after Wednesday: Thursday.

Check: 7×52=3647 \times 52 = 364, and 364+1=365364 + 1 = 365 ✓, with remainder 1<71 < 7 ✓. You can see this on a real calendar: after a non-leap year, every date moves one weekday later.

Note

Checking always returns to multiplication. Does (divisor)×(quotient)+(remainder)(\text{divisor}) \times (\text{quotient}) + (\text{remainder}) give back the original number? Is the remainder smaller than the divisor? Does the estimate (4,218÷341404{,}218 \div 34 \approx 140) agree with the number of digits in the quotient? Make these three questions a habit and long division stops going wrong.
