모든 공식의 어머니: cos(αβ)\cos(\alpha - \beta)

cos(αβ)=cosαcosβ+sinαsinβ\boxed{\cos(\alpha - \beta) = \cos\alpha\cos\beta + \sin\alpha\sin\beta}

A(cosα,sinα)A(\cos\alpha, \sin\alpha), B(cosβ,sinβ)B(\cos\beta, \sin\beta)를 잡고 현 ABAB를 잰다.

AB2=(cosαcosβ)2+(sinαsinβ)2=22(cosαcosβ+sinαsinβ)\overline{AB}^2 = (\cos\alpha - \cos\beta)^2 + (\sin\alpha - \sin\beta)^2 = 2 - 2(\cos\alpha\cos\beta + \sin\alpha\sin\beta)

A(cos(αβ),sin(αβ))A'(\cos(\alpha-\beta), \sin(\alpha-\beta))B(1,0)B'(1, 0)으로 옮겨 간다:

AB2=(cos(αβ)1)2+sin2(αβ)=22cos(αβ).\overline{A'B'}^2 = (\cos(\alpha-\beta) - 1)^2 + \sin^2(\alpha-\beta) = 2 - 2\cos(\alpha - \beta).

A B A′ B′ AB = A′B′

cos(αβ)=cosαcosβ+sinαsinβ.\cos(\alpha - \beta) = \cos\alpha\cos\beta + \sin\alpha\sin\beta. \qquad \blacksquare

cos(α+β)=cosαcosβsinαsinβ\cos(\alpha + \beta) = \cos\alpha\cos\beta - \sin\alpha\sin\beta

sin\sin 덧셈 — 여각 공식 sinx=cos(π2x)\sin x = \cos\left(\frac\pi2 - x\right)을 경유:

sin(α+β)=cos((π2α)β)=sinαcosβ+cosαsinβ\sin(\alpha + \beta) = \cos\left(\left(\tfrac\pi2 - \alpha\right) - \beta\right) = \sin\alpha\cos\beta + \cos\alpha\sin\beta

tan(α+β)=tanα+tanβ1tanαtanβ\tan(\alpha + \beta) = \frac{\tan\alpha + \tan\beta}{1 - \tan\alpha\tan\beta}

cos15°=cos(45°30°)=2232+2212=6+240.966  \cos 15° = \cos(45° - 30°) = \frac{\sqrt2}2 \cdot \frac{\sqrt3}2 + \frac{\sqrt2}2 \cdot \frac12 = \frac{\sqrt6 + \sqrt2}{4} \approx 0.966 \;✓

기울기 mmtan(경사각)\tan(\text{경사각})이었다.

tanθ=m1m21+m1m2\tan\theta = \left|\frac{m_1 - m_2}{1 + m_1 m_2}\right|

m1m2=1m_1 m_2 = -1

Goals
  • Prove the cosine difference formula cos(αβ)=cosαcosβ+sinαsinβ\cos(\alpha - \beta) = \cos\alpha\cos\beta + \sin\alpha\sin\beta by rotation and distance.
  • Derive from it every addition and subtraction formula for sin\sin, cos\cos, tan\tan.
  • Apply to exact values (15°15°, 75°75°) and the angle between lines — reproving m1m2=1m_1 m_2 = -1.

The mother of all the formulas: cos(αβ)\cos(\alpha - \beta)

sin15°\sin 15° appears in no special-angle table — but 15°=45°30°15° = 45° - 30°. With formulas for adding and subtracting angles, new angles open up as arithmetic on special ones. The origin of the whole family is one identity:

cos(αβ)=cosαcosβ+sinαsinβ\boxed{\cos(\alpha - \beta) = \cos\alpha\cos\beta + \sin\alpha\sin\beta}

Proof — take the unit-circle points A(cosα,sinα)A(\cos\alpha, \sin\alpha) and B(cosβ,sinβ)B(\cos\beta, \sin\beta) and measure the chord ABAB. Once directly:

AB2=(cosαcosβ)2+(sinαsinβ)2=22(cosαcosβ+sinαsinβ)\overline{AB}^2 = (\cos\alpha - \cos\beta)^2 + (\sin\alpha - \sin\beta)^2 = 2 - 2(\cos\alpha\cos\beta + \sin\alpha\sin\beta)

(expansion sheds two copies of cos2+sin2=1\cos^2 + \sin^2 = 1). Then rotate both points by β-\beta — rotation preserves distance (a rigid motion), so the chord's length is unchanged, while the points move to A(cos(αβ),sin(αβ))A'(\cos(\alpha-\beta), \sin(\alpha-\beta)) and B(1,0)B'(1, 0):

AB2=(cos(αβ)1)2+sin2(αβ)=22cos(αβ).\overline{A'B'}^2 = (\cos(\alpha-\beta) - 1)^2 + \sin^2(\alpha-\beta) = 2 - 2\cos(\alpha - \beta).

A B A′ B′ AB = A′B′
One chord measured in two positions — rotation preserves distance, so the expressions agree.

The two expressions must agree:

cos(αβ)=cosαcosβ+sinαsinβ.\cos(\alpha - \beta) = \cos\alpha\cos\beta + \sin\alpha\sin\beta. \qquad \blacksquare

From one, all: the derivation chain

Plug the symmetry formulas we already own into the mother, and the family is born.

Cosine sum — replace β\beta with β-\beta (negative-angle formulas):

cos(α+β)=cosαcosβsinαsinβ\cos(\alpha + \beta) = \cos\alpha\cos\beta - \sin\alpha\sin\beta

Sine sum — route through the cofunction identity sinx=cos(π2x)\sin x = \cos\left(\frac\pi2 - x\right):

sin(α+β)=cos((π2α)β)=sinαcosβ+cosαsinβ\sin(\alpha + \beta) = \cos\left(\left(\tfrac\pi2 - \alpha\right) - \beta\right) = \sin\alpha\cos\beta + \cos\alpha\sin\beta

Tangent sum — divide sine by cosine, then numerator and denominator by cosαcosβ\cos\alpha\cos\beta:

tan(α+β)=tanα+tanβ1tanαtanβ\tan(\alpha + \beta) = \frac{\tan\alpha + \tan\beta}{1 - \tan\alpha\tan\beta}

Subtraction versions: ββ\beta \mapsto -\beta throughout. The checking habit: set β=0\beta = 0 and every formula must collapse to an identity (cosα1+sinα0=cosα\cos\alpha \cdot 1 + \sin\alpha \cdot 0 = \cos\alpha ✓).

Example

cos15°=cos(45°30°)=2232+2212=6+240.966  \cos 15° = \cos(45° - 30°) = \frac{\sqrt2}2 \cdot \frac{\sqrt3}2 + \frac{\sqrt2}2 \cdot \frac12 = \frac{\sqrt6 + \sqrt2}{4} \approx 0.966 \;✓

Back to lines: the angle between them

A slope mm is tan(inclination)\tan(\text{inclination}). For lines of inclinations θ1\theta_1, θ2\theta_2, the angle between them, θ=θ1θ2\theta = \theta_1 - \theta_2, obeys the tangent subtraction formula:

tanθ=m1m21+m1m2\tan\theta = \left|\frac{m_1 - m_2}{1 + m_1 m_2}\right|

— and the instant the denominator dies (1+m1m2=01 + m_1m_2 = 0), the tangent blows up: the angle is 90°90°. Algebra 1's memorized perpendicularity condition

m1m2=1m_1 m_2 = -1

is thus reproved as a corollary of the addition formulas — an old formula serving as the new theory's check.

Watch out

sin(α+β)sinα+sinβ\sin(\alpha + \beta) \ne \sin\alpha + \sin\beta — functions do not distribute over addition (sin90°=1sin45°+sin45°=2\sin 90° = 1 \ne \sin 45° + \sin 45° = \sqrt2 is an instant counterexample). The tangent sum formula is undefined when tanαtanβ=1\tan\alpha\tan\beta = 1 (sum 90°+k180°90° + k \cdot 180°) — the zero-denominator affidavit lives here too.
