Combining a sin θ + b cos θ

Precalculus (AP)Precalculus (AP) · 3. 3. Completing Trigonometry

  • 합성 정리 asinθ+bcosθ=Rsin(θ+φ)a\sin\theta + b\cos\theta = R\sin(\theta + \varphi) (R=a2+b2R = \sqrt{a^2 + b^2})를 증명한다.
  • φ\varphi의 기하적 정체 — 점 (a,b)(a, b)의 방향각 — 를 읽는다(극형식 예고).

y=3sinθ+4cosθy = 3\sin\theta + 4\cos\theta의 최댓값은? 3+4=73 + 4 = 7이 아니다 — sin\sincos\cos은 다른 시각에 정점을 찍으므로 동시에 최대일 수 없다. 놀라운 사실: 이 합은 진폭 55의 사인 파동 하나다.

x y O -5 5 5 −5 3sin x 4cos x 5sin(x+φ)

asinθ+bcosθ=Rsin(θ+φ),R=a2+b2,cosφ=aR,  sinφ=bRa\sin\theta + b\cos\theta = R\sin(\theta + \varphi), \qquad R = \sqrt{a^2 + b^2}, \quad \cos\varphi = \frac aR,\; \sin\varphi = \frac bR

Rsin(θ+φ)=(Rcosφ)sinθ+(Rsinφ)cosθR\sin(\theta + \varphi) = (R\cos\varphi)\sin\theta + (R\sin\varphi)\cos\theta

— 좌변과 계수를 비교하면 a=Rcosφa = R\cos\varphi, b=Rsinφb = R\sin\varphi가 필요하다.

a2+b2=R2(cos2φ+sin2φ)=R2    R=a2+b2,a^2 + b^2 = R^2(\cos^2\varphi + \sin^2\varphi) = R^2 \;\Longrightarrow\; R = \sqrt{a^2 + b^2},

그리고 (aR)2+(bR)2=1\left(\frac aR\right)^2 + \left(\frac bR\right)^2 = 1이므로 점 (aR,bR)\left(\frac aR, \frac bR\right)은 단위원 위에 있다 — 그 점을 좌표로 갖는 각 φ\varphi가 존재한다(단위원 정의 그 자체). \blacksquare

φ\varphi의 정체가 기하로 보인다: (a,b)(a, b)의 방향각이다 — RR은 그 점까지의 거리(피타고라스). "계수의 쌍 (a,b)(a, b)"을 평면의 점으로 읽는 이 관점은 곧 복소수의 극형식(U4)으로 자란다.

예제

3sinθ+4cosθ3\sin\theta + 4\cos\theta: R=9+16=5R = \sqrt{9 + 16} = 5, φ\varphitanφ=43\tan\varphi = \frac43

최대·최소: Rsin()R\sin(\cdot)의 치역은 [R,R][-R, R] — 어떤 asinθ+bcosθa\sin\theta + b\cos\theta든 치역이 즉시 [R,R][-R, R]이다.

ca2+b2|c| \le \sqrt{a^2 + b^2}

최댓값을 a+ba + b로 쓰는 것이 이 단원 최다 오답 — 두 파동은 동시에 정점을 찍지 않는다(그랬다면 R=a2+b2<a+bR = \sqrt{a^2+b^2} < a + b일 리 없다; 등호는 한쪽이 00일 때뿐). φ\varphitanφ=ba\tan\varphi = \frac ba로만 정하면 사분면이 모호하다 — cosφ\cos\varphisinφ\sin\varphi부호까지 (a,b)(a, b)에서 읽어라.

Goals
  • Prove the combination theorem asinθ+bcosθ=Rsin(θ+φ)a\sin\theta + b\cos\theta = R\sin(\theta + \varphi) with R=a2+b2R = \sqrt{a^2 + b^2}.
  • Apply it to extremes, trig equations, and the solvability criterion cR|c| \le R.
  • Read φ\varphi's geometric identity — the direction angle of the point (a,b)(a, b) (previewing polar form).

A sum of waves is again a wave

What is the maximum of y=3sinθ+4cosθy = 3\sin\theta + 4\cos\theta? Not 3+4=73 + 4 = 7 — sine and cosine peak at different moments, never together. The surprise: this sum is a single sine wave of amplitude 55.

x y O -5 5 5 −5 3sin x 4cos x 5sin(x+φ)
A sine wave plus a cosine wave — one new sine wave of amplitude 5.

The theorem and its proof

asinθ+bcosθ=Rsin(θ+φ),R=a2+b2,cosφ=aR,  sinφ=bRa\sin\theta + b\cos\theta = R\sin(\theta + \varphi), \qquad R = \sqrt{a^2 + b^2}, \quad \cos\varphi = \frac aR,\; \sin\varphi = \frac bR

Proof — read the addition formula backwards. Expanding the right side:

Rsin(θ+φ)=(Rcosφ)sinθ+(Rsinφ)cosθR\sin(\theta + \varphi) = (R\cos\varphi)\sin\theta + (R\sin\varphi)\cos\theta

— comparing coefficients demands a=Rcosφa = R\cos\varphi and b=Rsinφb = R\sin\varphi. Do such RR and φ\varphi exist? Square and add:

a2+b2=R2(cos2φ+sin2φ)=R2    R=a2+b2,a^2 + b^2 = R^2(\cos^2\varphi + \sin^2\varphi) = R^2 \;\Longrightarrow\; R = \sqrt{a^2 + b^2},

and since (aR)2+(bR)2=1\left(\frac aR\right)^2 + \left(\frac bR\right)^2 = 1, the point (aR,bR)\left(\frac aR, \frac bR\right) lies on the unit circle — some angle φ\varphi has it for coordinates (the unit-circle definition itself). \blacksquare

Geometry unmasks φ\varphi: it is the direction angle of the point (a,b)(a, b) — and RR is the distance to it (Pythagoras). Reading the coefficient pair (a,b)(a, b) as a point of the plane is the viewpoint that will grow into the complex numbers' polar form (U4).

Example

3sinθ+4cosθ3\sin\theta + 4\cos\theta: R=9+16=5R = \sqrt{9 + 16} = 5, and φ\varphi is the acute angle with tanφ=43\tan\varphi = \frac43

3sinθ+4cosθ=5sin(θ+φ),max 5,  min 5.3\sin\theta + 4\cos\theta = 5\sin(\theta + \varphi), \qquad \text{max } 5,\; \text{min } -5.

The doors combination opens

Extremes: Rsin()R\sin(\cdot) ranges over [R,R][-R, R] — so every asinθ+bcosθa\sin\theta + b\cos\theta has range [R,R][-R, R], instantly.

Equations: sinθ3cosθ=1\sin\theta - \sqrt3\cos\theta = 1 folds to 2sin(θ60°)=12\sin(\theta - 60°) = 1, a standard equation.

Solvability: asinθ+bcosθ=ca\sin\theta + b\cos\theta = c has solutions exactly when

ca2+b2|c| \le \sqrt{a^2 + b^2}

cc must fit inside the wave's range. 2sinθ+3cosθ=42\sin\theta + 3\cos\theta = 4 has none, as 13<4\sqrt{13} < 4.

Physics' grammar: same-period sine waves, however many and however phased, sum to one sine wave of that period — sound superposition and AC circuit analysis stand on this theorem.

Watch out

Writing the maximum as a+ba + b is this unit's top wrong answer — the two waves never peak together (else R=a2+b2R = \sqrt{a^2+b^2} could not fall below a+ba + b; equality only when one coefficient is 00). And pinning φ\varphi by tanφ=ba\tan\varphi = \frac ba alone leaves the quadrant ambiguous — read both signs, of cosφ\cos\varphi and sinφ\sin\varphi, from (a,b)(a, b).
