Laws of Sines & Cosines

Precalculus (AP)Precalculus (AP) · 3. 3. Completing Trigonometry

표기 약속: 각 A,B,CA, B, C대변a,b,ca, b, c로 쓴다.

asinA=bsinB=csinC=2R(R:외접원의 반지름)\boxed{\frac{a}{\sin A} = \frac{b}{\sin B} = \frac{c}{\sin C} = 2R} \qquad (R: \text{외접원의 반지름})

sin(BDC)=a2R    sinA=a2R    asinA=2R.\sin(\angle BDC) = \frac{a}{2R} \;\Longrightarrow\; \sin A = \frac{a}{2R} \;\Longrightarrow\; \frac{a}{\sin A} = 2R.

A B C D a 2R

(AA가 둔각이면 BDC=180°A\angle BDC = 180° - A가 되지만 sin(180°A)=sinA\sin(180° - A) = \sin A — 보각 공식이 그 갈래를 봉합한다.)

c2=a2+b22abcosC\boxed{c^2 = a^2 + b^2 - 2ab\cos C}

증명(좌표)CC를 원점에, BB(a,0)(a, 0)에 놓으면 A=(bcosC,bsinC)A = (b\cos C, b\sin C)(단위원 정의의 반지름 bb 버전).

c2=(abcosC)2+(bsinC)2=a22abcosC+b2(cos2C+sin2C)=a2+b22abcosC.c^2 = (a - b\cos C)^2 + (b\sin C)^2 = a^2 - 2ab\cos C + b^2(\cos^2 C + \sin^2 C) = a^2 + b^2 - 2ab\cos C. \qquad \blacksquare

C=90°C = 90°이면 cosC=0\cos C = 0피타고라스 정리로 환원된다: 코사인법칙은 직각이 아닐 때 2abcosC-2ab\cos C가 벌금(예각, cos>0\cos > 0: 깎임)이나 보상(둔각: 더해짐)으로 붙는 피타고라스의 일반화다.

S=12absinCS = \frac12 ab\sin C

S=12basinC.S = \frac12 \cdot b \cdot a\sin C.

Goals
  • Prove the law of sines asinA=2R\dfrac{a}{\sin A} = 2R via inscribed angles and Thales, and the law of cosines via coordinates.
  • Choose the right law by the given data (SSS·SAS·ASA·SSA), and solve triangles.
  • Derive the area formula S=12absinCS = \frac12 ab\sin C and apply it to surveying and classification.

Triangles solve without right angles

Right triangles yielded to the trig ratios — general triangles have two laws. Notation: a,b,ca, b, c denote the sides opposite angles A,B,CA, B, C.

The law of sines: the side–angle exchange rate, and the circumcircle

asinA=bsinB=csinC=2R(R:circumradius)\boxed{\frac{a}{\sin A} = \frac{b}{\sin B} = \frac{c}{\sin C} = 2R} \qquad (R: \text{circumradius})

Proof — draw the diameter BD\overline{BD} of the circumcircle. By the inscribed angle theorem, BDC=A\angle BDC = \angle A (same arc BCBC), and an angle inscribed on a diameter is right (Thales), so BDC\triangle BDC has its right angle at CC:

sin(BDC)=a2R    sinA=a2R    asinA=2R.\sin(\angle BDC) = \frac{a}{2R} \;\Longrightarrow\; \sin A = \frac{a}{2R} \;\Longrightarrow\; \frac{a}{\sin A} = 2R.

A B C D a 2R
Draw a diameter — inscribed angles and Thales manufacture a/sin A = 2R.

The same argument serves bb and cc — the three ratios bound by the common value 2R2R. Two theorems from the geometry course (inscribed angle, Thales) raising a pillar of trigonometry. (An obtuse AA makes BDC=180°A\angle BDC = 180° - A, but sin(180°A)=sinA\sin(180° - A) = \sin A — the supplement identity seals that branch.)

The law of cosines: Pythagoras generalized

c2=a2+b22abcosC\boxed{c^2 = a^2 + b^2 - 2ab\cos C}

Proof (coordinates) — put CC at the origin and BB at (a,0)(a, 0); then A=(bcosC,bsinC)A = (b\cos C, b\sin C) (the unit-circle definition at radius bb). The distance formula:

c2=(abcosC)2+(bsinC)2=a22abcosC+b2(cos2C+sin2C)=a2+b22abcosC.c^2 = (a - b\cos C)^2 + (b\sin C)^2 = a^2 - 2ab\cos C + b^2(\cos^2 C + \sin^2 C) = a^2 + b^2 - 2ab\cos C. \qquad \blacksquare

At C=90°C = 90°, cosC=0\cos C = 0 — it reduces to Pythagoras: the law of cosines is Pythagoras with the correction 2abcosC-2ab\cos C, a deduction for acute CC (cos>0\cos > 0) and a surcharge for obtuse.

Which law, when

given law
three sides (SSS) / two sides + included angle (SAS) cosines
one side + two angles (ASA·AAS) sines
two sides + non-included angle (SSA) sines — but possibly ambiguous

In SSA, solving for sinB\sin B may leave two candidates (BB and 180°B180° - B) — the very reason SSA failed as a congruence criterion materializes here as "two triangles" (exercise p09).

Area: S=12absinCS = \frac12 ab\sin C

Two sides and the included angle suffice — with bb as base, the height is asinCa\sin C, so

S=12basinC.S = \frac12 \cdot b \cdot a\sin C.

"Base times height over two," with sine computing the height on the fly.

Watch out

SSA via the law of sines may have two answers — check whether both BB and 180°B180° - B pass the angle-sum test. Finding angles by the law of cosines carries no such ambiguity (cos\cos is one-to-one on [0°,180°][0°, 180°]) — why cosines are the safe road in SSS. And the sign of 2abcosC-2ab\cos C: for obtuse CC, cosC<0\cos C < 0, so it adds.
