Average Rate of Change

Precalculus (AP)Precalculus (AP) · 1. 1. Rates of Change & Functions Revisited

구간 [a,b]에서의 평균변화율=f(b)f(a)ba\text{구간 } [a, b] \text{에서의 } \textbf{평균변화율} = \frac{f(b) - f(a)}{b - a}

기하로는 곡선 위 두 점 (a,f(a))(a, f(a)), (b,f(b))(b, f(b))를 잇는 할선의 기울기다.

구간 [a,b][a, b]를 좁혀 bbaa에 한없이 붙이면? s(t)=t2s(t) = t^2인 낙하에서 [1,1.1],[1,1.01],[1,1.001][1, 1.1], [1, 1.01], [1, 1.001]의 평균 속도는

2.1,2.01,2.001,2.1, \quad 2.01, \quad 2.001, \dots

Goals
  • Define the average rate of change as a secant slope, computed over a named interval.
  • Identify function families (linear, quadratic, exponential) by difference tables — each family's rate signature.
  • Read concavity from growing or shrinking rates, and preview the instantaneous rate (calculus).

Bringing slope to curves

A line's slope measures the same everywhere — hence "the" slope of a line. Curves differ: steepness varies by stretch. So we measure over a named interval:

average rate of change on [a,b]=f(b)f(a)ba\textbf{average rate of change on } [a, b] = \frac{f(b) - f(a)}{b - a}

Geometrically it is the slope of the secant line through (a,f(a))(a, f(a)) and (b,f(b))(b, f(b)). The ΔyΔx\frac{\Delta y}{\Delta x} of linear functions, emigrated to the world of curves — lines being the special case where this value is constant.

x y O -1 1 2 3 4 2 4 6 8 10 1 3 5
One parabola, different intervals — the secant slopes steepen.

Three families, three rate signatures

List the average rates over equal-width intervals [0,1],[1,2],[2,3],[0,1], [1,2], [2,3], \dots and each family shows a signature pattern.

f(x)f(x) rates by interval pattern
2x+52x + 5 (linear) 2,2,2,2, 2, 2, \dots constant
x2x^2 (quadratic) 1,3,5,1, 3, 5, \dots growing arithmetically (difference 22)
2x2^x (exponential) 1,2,4,1, 2, 4, \dots growing geometrically (ratio 22)

The reasons are short — for x2x^2, the rate on [n,n+1][n, n+1] is (n+1)2n2=2n+1(n+1)^2 - n^2 = 2n + 1: linear in nn, hence arithmetic. For 2x2^x it is 2n+12n=2n2^{n+1} - 2^n = 2^n: proportional to the function itself, hence geometric.

The tabular tool for these patterns is the difference table: write the gaps between neighbors (first differences), then the gaps of the gaps (second differences) —

constant first differences: linear; constant second differences: quadratic; differences proportional to the values (constant neighbor ratios): exponential.

The sequences unit's arithmetic/geometric test, promoted into a classifier of function data.

The change of the change: concavity

The rates of x2x^2 kept growing — the graph steepens: concave up. The rates of x\sqrt x run 1,0.41,0.32,1, 0.41, 0.32, \dots, shrinking — the graph flattens: concave down.

Increasing average rates = concave up; decreasing = concave down.

Sentences like "still rising, but the rise is losing steam" (increasing + concave down) now carry numerical content — the grammar for reading a news chart, too.

Toward the instant

Shrink the interval [a,b][a, b], pressing bb onto aa. For falling motion s(t)=t2s(t) = t^2, the average speeds over [1,1.1],[1,1.01],[1,1.001][1, 1.1], [1, 1.01], [1, 1.001] run

2.1,2.01,2.001,2.1, \quad 2.01, \quad 2.001, \dots

— the destination shows: 22. That destination is the instantaneous rate (instantaneous speed), and the precise grammar of "destination" is the limit — a half-step in this course's final unit, in full in calculus. From average to instantaneous — this single step launches all of calculus.

Watch out

The average rate sees only the two endpoints — whatever happened between is invisible (sinx\sin x rises and falls on [0,π][0, \pi], yet its average rate is 00). And "average speed" is total distance ÷\div total time, not the arithmetic mean of speeds — why 6060 out and 4040 back does not average 5050 awaits in the exercises.
