  • 합성의 두 방향 — sin(arcsinx)=x\sin(\arcsin x) = x는 항상, arcsin(sinx)=x\arcsin(\sin x) = x는 치역에서만 — 을 구분한다.
  • cos(arcsinx)\cos(\arcsin x)형 합성 계산과 arctan\arctan 덧셈을 다룬다.

sin\sin [π2,π2]\left[-\frac\pi2, \frac\pi2\right] arcsinx\arcsin x [1,1][-1, 1]
cos\cos [0,π][0, \pi] arccosx\arccos x [1,1][-1, 1]
tan\tan (π2,π2)\left(-\frac\pi2, \frac\pi2\right) arctanx\arctan x R\mathbb R

arcsin12=π6,arccos(12)=2π3,arctan1=π4\arcsin\frac12 = \frac\pi6, \qquad \arccos\left(-\frac12\right) = \frac{2\pi}3, \qquad \arctan 1 = \frac\pi4

x y O -2 -1 1 2 -2 -1 1 2 sin x arcsin x

sin(arcsinx)=x(정의역 [1,1] 전체에서)그러나arcsin(sinx)=x(오직 x[π2,π2])\sin(\arcsin x) = x \quad (\text{정의역 } [-1,1] \text{ 전체에서}) \qquad \text{그러나} \qquad \arcsin(\sin x) = x \quad \left(\text{오직 } x \in \left[-\tfrac\pi2, \tfrac\pi2\right]\right)

arcsin(sin5π6)=arcsin12=π65π6\arcsin\left(\sin\frac{5\pi}6\right) = \arcsin\frac12 = \frac\pi6 \ne \frac{5\pi}6

cos(arcsin35)\cos(\arcsin\frac35) 같은 합성은 이름을 붙이면 풀린다 — θ=arcsin35\theta = \arcsin\frac35로 두면 sinθ=35\sin\theta = \frac35이고 θ[π2,π2]\theta \in \left[-\frac\pi2, \frac\pi2\right]:

cosθ=+1925=45\cos\theta = +\sqrt{1 - \tfrac9{25}} = \frac45

Goals
  • Define arcsin\arcsin, arccos\arccos, arctan\arctan by domain restriction, knowing each range and its reason.
  • Separate the two round trips — sin(arcsinx)=x\sin(\arcsin x) = x always; arcsin(sinx)=x\arcsin(\sin x) = x only on the range.
  • Handle compositions like cos(arcsinx)\cos(\arcsin x) and arctangent addition.

The function that returns "the" angle

sinθ=0.6\sin\theta = 0.6 has infinitely many solutions — sine is not one-to-one, so no inverse exists. The remedy is the technique built in the composition unit: domain restriction. Cut a one-to-one stretch from the wave:

function restricted interval (= inverse's range) inverse domain
sin\sin [π2,π2]\left[-\frac\pi2, \frac\pi2\right] arcsinx\arcsin x [1,1][-1, 1]
cos\cos [0,π][0, \pi] arccosx\arccos x [1,1][-1, 1]
tan\tan (π2,π2)\left(-\frac\pi2, \frac\pi2\right) arctanx\arctan x R\mathbb R

Two criteria pick the interval — the function must be one-to-one there and must cover its entire range ([1,1][-1,1], etc.). Sine and tangent use the increasing stretch around the origin; cosine (not one-to-one there) takes [0,π][0, \pi].

arcsin12=π6,arccos(12)=2π3,arctan1=π4\arcsin\frac12 = \frac\pi6, \qquad \arccos\left(-\frac12\right) = \frac{2\pi}3, \qquad \arctan 1 = \frac\pi4

arcsinx\arcsin x means "the angle with sine xx lying in [π2,π2]\left[-\frac\pi2, \frac\pi2\right]": the answer is always unique.

x y O -2 -1 1 2 -2 -1 1 2 sin x arcsin x
Restricted sine (bold) and its mirror arcsin — the discarded wave, faint.

The graph of arctan\arctan deserves note: its domain is all of R\mathbb R, and tangent's vertical asymptotes x=±π2x = \pm\frac\pi2 reflect into horizontal asymptotes y=±π2y = \pm\frac\pi2 — a function folding every real number into (π2,π2)\left(-\frac\pi2, \frac\pi2\right).

Two round trips: x|x| restaged

sin(arcsinx)=x(on all of [1,1])butarcsin(sinx)=x(only for x[π2,π2])\sin(\arcsin x) = x \quad (\text{on all of } [-1,1]) \qquad \text{but} \qquad \arcsin(\sin x) = x \quad \left(\text{only for } x \in \left[-\tfrac\pi2, \tfrac\pi2\right]\right)

The outer trip is perfect; the inner one works only in the restricted zone — precisely the structure of x2=x\sqrt{x^2} = |x|. Example:

arcsin(sin5π6)=arcsin12=π65π6\arcsin\left(\sin\frac{5\pi}6\right) = \arcsin\frac12 = \frac\pi6 \ne \frac{5\pi}6

— the returned angle is folded into the range. This is why a calculator's sin1\sin^{-1} always answers in that interval.

Composite values: one triangle suffices

Compositions like cos(arcsin35)\cos(\arcsin\frac35) yield to naming — set θ=arcsin35\theta = \arcsin\frac35, so sinθ=35\sin\theta = \frac35 with θ[π2,π2]\theta \in \left[-\frac\pi2, \frac\pi2\right]:

cosθ=+1925=45\cos\theta = +\sqrt{1 - \tfrac9{25}} = \frac45

— the ++ is warranted because cosine is nonnegative on arcsine's range: the range condition holds the signing authority. (A 33-44-55 triangle sketch agrees — but the sign argument comes from the range.)

Watch out

The notation sin1x\sin^{-1} x is not 1sinx\dfrac1{\sin x} — the inverse-notation trap detonates most often in trigonometry. Erasing arcsin(sinx)\arcsin(\sin x) to xx unconditionally is the same blunder as erasing x2\sqrt{x^2} to xx. And arccos\arccos ranges over [0,π][0, \pi]arccos(12)\arccos(-\frac12) is 2π3\frac{2\pi}3, not π3-\frac\pi3 (beware the sign lure of negative inputs).
