1x<1  ?  1<x(틀림 — x=1도 해다)\frac1x < 1 \;\overset{?}{\Longrightarrow}\; 1 < x \qquad (\text{틀림 — } x = -1\text{도 해다})

x+1x23    x+1x230    72xx20.\frac{x+1}{x-2} \le 3 \;\Longrightarrow\; \frac{x+1}{x-2} - 3 \le 0 \;\Longrightarrow\; \frac{7 - 2x}{x - 2} \le 0.

Goals
  • Solve every polynomial and rational inequality with one tool: the sign chart.
  • Connect multiplicity parity to sign alternation, via the graphs.
  • Know why "multiplying by the denominator" is forbidden in rational inequalities, and standardize the move-combine procedure.

The sign chart: one tool

Quadratic inequalities ran on parabola pictures — for higher degrees, trade the picture for a sign chart. One principle underlies it: a polynomial can change sign only at its roots (to switch between two points it must pass through 00 somewhere between, and the zeros are the roots).

Procedure: ① factor and mark the roots on a number line; ② settle each interval's sign (test a value, or multiply the factors' signs); ③ read off the intervals matching the inequality.

Example

(x+1)(x2)(x5)<0(x+1)(x-2)(x-5) < 0: the roots 1,2,5-1, 2, 5 cut the line into four intervals. The rightmost (x>5x > 5) has every factor positive — ++; moving left, each root crossed flips the sign: ,+,,+-, +, -, +.

Answer: x<1  or  2<x<5.\text{Answer: } x < -1 \;\text{or}\; 2 < x < 5.

Multiplicity: flip or bounce

A factor repeated an even number of times, like (x+2)2(x+2)^2, crosses its root without changing sign (squares are never negative). The polynomial graphs unit's "odd multiplicity passes through, even touches" — translated into sign-chart language:

(x+2)²(x−1)(x−3) −2 ×2 1 3 + + +
Signs flip at each root — except at a root of even multiplicity, where they hold.

(x+2)2(x1)(x3)(x+2)^2(x-1)(x-3) runs +,+,,++, +, -, + — no flip at x=2x = -2. So the solution of 0\le 0 is the interval [1,3][1, 3] plus the isolated point {2}\{-2\} (the sign there is ++, but the value itself is 00, satisfying the equality): the signature of an even root.

Rational inequalities: do not multiply by the denominator

In equations we multiplied through and filtered extraneous roots. In inequalities, the multiplication itself is unsafe — the denominator's unknown sign leaves you unable to say whether the inequality keeps or flips.

1x<1  ?  1<x(wrong — x=1 is also a solution)\frac1x < 1 \;\overset{?}{\Longrightarrow}\; 1 < x \qquad (\text{wrong — } x = -1 \text{ is also a solution})

The standard procedure: move everything to one side → combine → sign chart:

Example

x+1x23    x+1x230    72xx20.\frac{x+1}{x-2} \le 3 \;\Longrightarrow\; \frac{x+1}{x-2} - 3 \le 0 \;\Longrightarrow\; \frac{7 - 2x}{x - 2} \le 0.

Chart with the numerator's root 72\frac72 and the denominator's root 22: ,+,-, +, -

x<2  or  x72x < 2 \;\text{or}\; x \ge \frac72

(x=72x = \frac72 is included — numerator zero; x=2x = 2 is excluded unconditionally — denominator zero).

Since AB\dfrac AB shares its sign with the product ABAB, the charting works exactly as for polynomials — the sole difference: denominator roots are always excluded.

Watch out

Three prohibitions — never multiply or divide an inequality by a variable factor (dividing x34xx^3 \le 4x by xx into x24x^2 \le 4 discards the negative solutions wholesale; move and factor instead: x(x2)(x+2)0x(x-2)(x+2) \le 0). Denominator roots stay excluded even under \le. And the "alternate every cell" reflex works only after checking multiplicities — it halts at even ones.
