425336=89.425 - 336 = 89\text{점}.

Goals
  • Understand the mean as "leveling out," compute it — and run it backwards via sum == mean ×\times count.
  • Find medians (line up, take the middle) and modes (most frequent) — including even-sized data sets.
  • Know how one extreme value affects the mean and the median differently.
  • Choose the representative value that fits the data and the question.

The mean: level it out

Four kids hold 3,7,4,63, 7, 4, 6 blocks. If the richer hands blocks to the poorer until everyone holds the same, how many does each end with? That number is the mean:

3 7 4 6 5 5 5 5 (3+7+4+6) ÷ 4 = 5
Move blocks until level — everyone at 5. That's the mean.

Replace the moving with arithmetic: pool everything (3+7+4+6=203+7+4+6 = 20) and share equally (÷4\div 4):

mean=sum of the datacount=204=5.\text{mean} = \frac{\text{sum of the data}}{\text{count}} = \frac{20}{4} = 5.

The formula turned around is the workhorse in practice:

sum=mean×count.\text{sum} = \text{mean} \times \text{count}.

"Five numbers average 1212" means "their sum is 6060" — half of all mean problems dissolve under this translation.

Example 1 · Hitting a target average

Four test scores so far: 78,85,90,8378, 85, 90, 83. What must the fifth score be for a five-test average of 8585?

Solution. An average of 8585 requires a sum of 85×5=42585 \times 5 = 425. The current sum is 78+85+90+83=33678 + 85 + 90 + 83 = 336:

425336=89.425 - 336 = 89.

Check: 336+895=4255=85\frac{336 + 89}{5} = \frac{425}{5} = 85 ✓ — translate the average into a sum, and the problem becomes one subtraction.

The median: line up, take the middle

Sort the data from least to greatest; the value standing in the very middle is the median. Sorting 3,9,5,12,73, 9, 5, 12, 7 gives 3,5,7,9,123, 5, 7, 9, 12 — the middle is 77.

With an even count there are two middle values — the median is their mean: for 4,5,8,94, 5, 8, 9 it's 5+82=6.5\frac{5+8}{2} = 6.5. (The median's one trap is skipping the sort — it is not the middle of the data as given.)

The mode: the most frequent value

The mode is the value that appears most often. It's also the only representative that works for non-numeric data — the "average blood type" is nonsense, but "the most common blood type" is not. A shoe store stocking up doesn't want the average size either; it wants the best-selling one.

When the three part ways: the power of one extreme

On evenly spread data the three representatives huddle together — until one extreme value walks in.

Example 2 · One value shakes the board

Five students' daily game time: 4,5,5,6,304, 5, 5, 6, 30 minutes. Find the mean and median, and pick the better representative of a "typical student."

Solution. Mean: 4+5+5+6+305=505=10\frac{4+5+5+6+30}{5} = \frac{50}{5} = 10 minutes. Median: already sorted; the middle is 55.

Four students sit at 464{\sim}6 minutes, yet the mean says 1010 — the one 3030 dragged it up. In the leveling picture, that student's blocks get redistributed to everyone. The median, watching only the position in line, doesn't budge however large the end value grows. For "typical," the honest representative is the median, 55 minutes.

Make the 3030 a 300300 and the median still reads 55 — while the mean rockets to 6464. That is why data with extremes forces the choice of representative.

Note

Adding one more data value equal to the mean leaves the mean unchanged — it's like standing one more bar of exactly the level height after the leveling is done. Tools for measuring spread — quartiles, box plots — continue in Algebra 1's data analysis.
