Square Roots, a First Look

Pre-AlgebraPre-Algebra · 4. 4. Exponents & Roots, a First Look

25=5.\sqrt{25} = 5.

00 이상의 수 aa에 대해, 제곱하면 aa가 되는 00 이상의 수를 a\sqrt{a}로 쓰고 "루트 aa" 또는 "aa의 제곱근"이라 읽는다: (a)2=a\left(\sqrt{a}\right)^2 = a.

49=7\sqrt{49} = 7, 144=12\sqrt{144} = 12처럼 어떤 자연수의 제곱이 되는 수(1,4,9,16,1, 4, 9, 16, \ldots)를 완전제곱수라 한다. 완전제곱수의 제곱근은 표 한 벌을 알면 즉답이다:

nn 11 22 33 44 55 66 77 88 99 1010 1111 1212 1313 1414 1515
n2n^2 11 44 99 1616 2525 3636 4949 6464 8181 100100 121121 144144 169169 196196 225225

152=22515^2 = 225까지는 외워 둘 가치가 있다 — 어림의 발판이 되기 때문이다. 경계 사례도 정리해 두자: 0=0\sqrt{0} = 0, 1=1\sqrt{1} = 1.

72=49<50<64=82    7<50<8.7^2 = 49 < 50 < 64 = 8^2 \implies 7 < \sqrt{50} < 8.

9<90<10.9 < \sqrt{90} < 10.

1.42=1.96<2<2.25=1.52    1.4<2<1.5,1.4^2 = 1.96 < 2 < 2.25 = 1.5^2 \implies 1.4 < \sqrt2 < 1.5,
1.412=1.9881<2<2.0164=1.422    1.41<2<1.42.1.41^2 = 1.9881 < 2 < 2.0164 = 1.42^2 \implies 1.41 < \sqrt2 < 1.42.

0 1 2 3 √2

제곱근끼리는 a<b    a<b\sqrt{a} < \sqrt{b} \iff a < b — 근호 안만 견주면 된다.

20×4=80 m.20 \times 4 = 80 \text{ m}.

Goals
  • Understand square roots as the reverse question of squaring, and read and write the 0\sqrt{\phantom{0}} symbol.
  • Recognize perfect squares up to 15215^2 and answer their roots instantly.
  • Trap the square root of a non-square between consecutive whole numbers, then tighten to a decimal place or two.
  • Compare square roots by comparing squares.
  • Accept, from observation, that some numbers cannot be written exactly as decimals.

Asking backwards

Last lesson asked: "a square has side 55 — what is its area?" Answer: 52=255^2 = 25. Now flip it:

25 ? ?
A square of area 25 — how long is its side?

A square has area 2525 — what is its side? That asks for the number whose square is 2525, and the answer is 55. The symbol for this backwards question is the square-root sign:

25=5.\sqrt{25} = 5.

DefinitionSquare root

For a number a0a \ge 0, the number 0\ge 0 whose square is aa is written a\sqrt{a}, read "the square root of aa": (a)2=a\left(\sqrt{a}\right)^2 = a.

Note

If you hunt among negative numbers too, "a number whose square is 2525" grows a second chapter — but that story needs multiplication of negatives, which arrives next unit. In this lesson everything is 00 or more, like lengths — and the symbol a\sqrt{a} always names the nonnegative answer.

Perfect squares: instant answers

Numbers like 4949 and 144144 that are squares of whole numbers (1,4,9,16,1, 4, 9, 16, \ldots) are called perfect squares, and their roots come instantly from one table:

nn 11 22 33 44 55 66 77 88 99 1010 1111 1212 1313 1414 1515
n2n^2 11 44 99 1616 2525 3636 4949 6464 8181 100100 121121 144144 169169 196196 225225

Knowing these up to 152=22515^2 = 225 pays off — they are the footholds for estimating everything else. Edge cases worth filing: 0=0\sqrt{0} = 0 and 1=1\sqrt{1} = 1.

Not a perfect square? Trap it between neighbors

What is 50\sqrt{50}? 5050 isn't in the table — but its neighbors are:

72=49<50<64=82    7<50<8.7^2 = 49 < 50 < 64 = 8^2 \implies 7 < \sqrt{50} < 8.

For positive numbers, bigger numbers have bigger squares, so comparing squares hands you the order of the roots. And since 5050 hugs 4949, 50\sqrt{50} sits very close to 77.

Example 1 · Between which whole numbers?

Between which two consecutive whole numbers is 90\sqrt{90}?

Solution. 92=81<90<100=1029^2 = 81 < 90 < 100 = 10^2, so

9<90<10.9 < \sqrt{90} < 10.

Since 9090 leans toward 8181, 90\sqrt{90} sits in the low 99s. (Indeed 9.52=90.25>909.5^2 = 90.25 > 90, so 90\sqrt{90} is even less than 9.59.5.)

Push the same squeeze past the decimal point and the estimate sharpens as far as you like. Take 2\sqrt2:

1.42=1.96<2<2.25=1.52    1.4<2<1.5,1.4^2 = 1.96 < 2 < 2.25 = 1.5^2 \implies 1.4 < \sqrt2 < 1.5,
1.412=1.9881<2<2.0164=1.422    1.41<2<1.42.1.41^2 = 1.9881 < 2 < 2.0164 = 1.42^2 \implies 1.41 < \sqrt2 < 1.42.

0 1 2 3 √2
On the number line, √2 is a definite point between 1 and 2, a bit left of 1.5.

Each digit tightens the fence — yet remarkably, the process never ends: no finite decimal squares to exactly 22, so 2\sqrt2 can only ever be written as "about 1.414211.41421\cdots." Numbers that no finite or repeating decimal can capture are called irrational; the proof that 2\sqrt2 truly is one waits in the competition track's number theory. What to keep today is simpler — even without an exact decimal, 2\sqrt2 is a perfectly good number with its own definite spot on the number line.

Building root sense

Compare by squaring. Which is larger, 30\sqrt{30} or 5.55.5? Square both: 3030 versus 30.2530.25, so 30<5.5\sqrt{30} < 5.5. Between roots themselves, a<b    a<b\sqrt{a} < \sqrt{b} \iff a < b — just compare what's under the sign.

Roots get along with multiplication. 4×9=2×3=6=36\sqrt4 \times \sqrt9 = 2 \times 3 = 6 = \sqrt{36} — the same as multiplying under the sign. Observations like this get organized into proper laws in Algebra 1. But note early that roots do not get along with addition: 9+16=3+4=7\sqrt9 + \sqrt{16} = 3 + 4 = 7, while 25=5\sqrt{25} = 5. The root sign refuses to pass through a plus (the Problems tab digs into why).

Example 2 · From area to perimeter

A square park has area 400400 m2^2. What is its perimeter?

Solution. The side is 400=20\sqrt{400} = 20 m (since 202=40020^2 = 400). The perimeter is four sides:

20×4=80 m.20 \times 4 = 80 \text{ m}.

Area \to side \to perimeter — the middle bridge is the square root.
