Pre-AlgebraPre-Algebra · 7. 7. The Coordinate Plane

y=2x.y = 2x.

y=ax(a0)y = ax \quad (a \neq 0)

x=10    y=25.x = 10 \implies y = 25.

Goals
  • Find the rule linking two quantities from a table and write it as an equation.
  • Turn a table's columns into ordered pairs and graph them.
  • Recognize proportional relationships (y=axy = ax) and know their graphs are lines through the origin.
  • Read values off a graph, and interpret steepness as speed when comparing two graphs.
  • Know that not every rule graphs as a line.

From table to rule

A tank fills at 22 L per minute. Tabulate time xx (minutes) against water yy (liters):

xx (min) 00 11 22 33 44
yy (L) 00 22 44 66 88

In every column, yy is twice xx — the rule collapses into one line:

y=2x.y = 2x.

An equation is a compressed table. Columns the table never wrote down (x=50x = 50 gives y=100y = 100) — the one line knows them all.

From table to graph

Last lesson taught plotting, so read each column as an ordered pair — (0,0)(0, 0), (1,2)(1, 2), (2,4)(2, 4), (3,6)(3, 6) — and plot:

x y O -1 1 2 3 4 5 -2 2 4 6 8 10 y = 2x (1, 2) (2, 4) (3, 6)
Plotting the y = 2x table lines the points up on one line through the origin.

The points fall on a single straight line. Table, equation, graph: three outfits for one rule — the table lists values, the equation compresses them, and the graph shows the whole rule at a glance.

Proportional: scaling passes straight through

In y=2xy = 2x, doubling xx doubles yy; tripling xx triples yy. A relationship that hands scale factors through unchanged is proportional, with equation

y=ax(a0).y = ax \quad (a \neq 0).

This is the ratio unit's scale-factor sense again — indeed yx=a\frac yx = a means the ratio's value stays constant. Hence the graph is always a line through the origin (x=0x = 0 forces y=0y = 0), and aa is "the rise in yy per one step of xx" — a unit rate, made visible as steepness.

Example 1 · Find the rule, then use it

The graph of a proportional relationship y=axy = ax passes through (4,10)(4, 10). Find aa, then find yy when x=10x = 10.

Solution. Substituting (4,10)(4, 10): 10=4a10 = 4a, so a=104=2.5a = \frac{10}{4} = 2.5. Thus y=2.5xy = 2.5x, and

x=10    y=25.x = 10 \implies y = 25.

Check: does y=2.5xy = 2.5x pass through (4,10)(4, 10)? 2.5×4=102.5 \times 4 = 10 ✓.

Graphs are comparison machines

Jiho walks 8080 m per minute, Sua 6060. Draw both rules, y=80xy = 80x and y=60xy = 60x, on one plane:

x y O -1 1 2 3 4 5 6 -100 100 200 300 400 500 y = 80x y = 60x
80 m/min versus 60 — the steeper line is the faster walker; the vertical gap at 4 minutes is their distance apart.

Steeper means faster. At any time xx, the higher graph has gone farther, and the vertical gap between the graphs is the distance between the walkers at that instant. One glance at the slopes replaces a whole table comparison — and giving this "steepness" its proper name, slope, is a main storyline of Algebra 1.

Not every rule is a line

For a square of side xx, the area rule is y=x2y = x^2 (the powers lesson). Plot its table:

x y O -1 1 2 3 4 -2 2 4 6 8 10 (1, 1) (2, 4) (3, 9)
The points of y = x² pull away from any line, bending upward ever more steeply.

(1,1)(1,1), (2,4)(2,4), (3,9)(3,9) — the jumps in yy grow as 1,3,5,1, 3, 5, \ldots (the same odd numbers that built perfect squares), so the points bend away from any straight line, curving upward. Telling line-making rules from curving ones — and the identities of the curves — is Algebra 1's business, under the name functions.

Note

Whether to connect the dots depends on the rule. The tank's xx can be 1.51.5 or 2.72.7 minutes, so joining the points with a line means something; but the number of matchstick squares nn takes only whole values, so honest graphing leaves separate dots. Before drawing, ask once: "do in-between values make sense?"
