8:12=2:3    812=23.8 : 12 = 2 : 3 \iff \frac{8}{12} = \frac{2}{3}.

a:b=c:da : b = c : d

분수 등식에서 곧장 유도된다. a:b=c:da : b = c : d라 하자. 즉

ab=cd.\frac ab = \frac cd.

ab×bd=cd×bd    a×d=c×b.\frac ab \times bd = \frac cd \times bd \implies a \times d = c \times b.

길 1 — 배율. 5:7=20:5 : 7 = 20 : \square에서 5205 \to 2044배.

3:8=:203 : 8 = \square : 20\square

8×=3×20=60.8 \times \square = 3 \times 20 = 60.

1:50,000=4:    =50,000×4=200,000 cm.1 : 50{,}000 = 4 : \square \implies \square = 50{,}000 \times 4 = 200{,}000 \text{ cm}.

1 m2=100×100=10,000 cm2.1 \text{ m}^2 = 100 \times 100 = 10{,}000 \text{ cm}^2.

0.06×10,000=600 cm2.0.06 \times 10{,}000 = 600 \text{ cm}^2.

Goals
  • Write and read a proportion — an equation saying two ratios are equal.
  • Derive "product of the means = product of the extremes" from a fraction equation, and use its converse.
  • Find a missing term of a proportion by scale factor or by cross products.
  • Translate proportional situations — map scales, recipes — into proportions and solve them.
  • Convert units: length, time, capacity, and the 1002100^2 trap hiding in units of area.

A proportion: the sentence "these two ratios are equal"

Last lesson, 8:128 : 12 and 2:32 : 3 named the same comparison. Written as an equation,

8:12=2:3,8 : 12 = 2 : 3,

and an equation of this shape is a proportion. When is it true? Exactly when the two ratios have the same value:

8:12=2:3    812=23.8 : 12 = 2 : 3 \iff \frac{8}{12} = \frac{2}{3}.

A proportion is a fraction equation in disguise — everything built in the last unit carries over.

DefinitionProportion, means and extremes

An equation of the form a:b=c:da : b = c : d is a proportion. The outer terms aa and dd are the extremes; the inner terms bb and cc are the means.

Means multiply to what extremes multiply to

Proportions have a famous property: the two inner terms and the two outer terms have equal products.

2 : 3 = 8 : 12 3 × 8 = 24 2 × 12 = 24
In 2:3 = 8:12, the means and the extremes both multiply to 24.

No coincidence — it falls straight out of the fraction equation. Suppose a:b=c:da : b = c : d, that is,

ab=cd.\frac ab = \frac cd.

The two sides are the same number, so multiplying both by the same number b×db \times d keeps them equal:

ab×bd=cd×bd    a×d=c×b.\frac ab \times bd = \frac cd \times bd \implies a \times d = c \times b.

On the left the bb cancels; on the right the dd does. Hence the product of the extremes (adad) equals the product of the means (bcbc). It runs backwards too: if ad=bcad = bc, divide both sides by bdbd to recover ab=cd\frac ab = \frac cd. So the property is also a test: compare two products and you know at once whether a proportion is true.

Finding a missing term: two roads

If one term of a proportion is blank, you can fill it.

Road 1 — scale factor. In 5:7=20:5 : 7 = 20 : \square, the jump 5205 \to 20 is ×4\times 4, so =7×4=28\square = 7 \times 4 = 28. When the scale factor is visible at a glance, this road is fastest.

Road 2 — cross products. The general tool for when the scale factor is ugly.

Example 1 · By cross products

Find \square in 3:8=:203 : 8 = \square : 20.

Solution. The scale factor 8208 \to 20 is 208=2.5\frac{20}{8} = 2.5 — not a whole number, awkward mentally. Go by cross products. Means multiply to what extremes multiply to:

8×=3×20=60.8 \times \square = 3 \times 20 = 60.

The number that multiplies 88 into 6060 is 60÷8=7.560 \div 8 = 7.5. So =7.5\square = 7.5.

Check via Road 1: 3×2.5=7.53 \times 2.5 = 7.5 ✓ — the roads agree.

A proportion is a translator

When a story hides a proportional relationship, set up the proportion with like quantities in like positions. The classic case is a map scale: 1:50,0001 : 50{,}000 is the ratio "map 11 to real 50,00050{,}000."

Example 2 · Map scale

On a map with scale 1:50,0001 : 50{,}000, two spots are 44 cm apart. What is the real distance in km?

Solution. Keep (map) :: (real) positions consistent:

1:50,000=4:    =50,000×4=200,000 cm.1 : 50{,}000 = 4 : \square \implies \square = 50{,}000 \times 4 = 200{,}000 \text{ cm}.

Now change the units' clothing: 200,000200{,}000 cm =2,000= 2{,}000 m =2= 2 km.

Check: putting 22 km back on the map gives 200,000÷50,000=4200{,}000 \div 50{,}000 = 4 cm ✓.

As in that second half, proportional answers often arrive in inconvenient units — which is why unit conversion is the other half of this lesson.

Unit conversion: think in counts

11 m =100= 100 cm. So 3.23.2 m is 3.23.2 copies of 100100 cm — that's 3.2×100=3203.2 \times 100 = 320 cm. All of conversion lives in that one sentence: multiply the count of big units by how many small units one big unit holds. Going the other way, small to big, is division: 450450 cm =450÷100=4.5= 450 \div 100 = 4.5 m.

If the direction ever feels shaky, sanity-check the result. Converting 3.23.2 km to meters and getting 0.00320.0032? The count of meters came out smaller than the count of kilometers — flipped. Measuring with a smaller unit must produce a bigger count.

Length 11 km =1000= 1000 m,   1\;1 m =100= 100 cm,   1\;1 cm =10= 10 mm
Capacity 11 L =1000= 1000 mL
Mass 11 kg =1000= 1000 g,   1\;1 t =1000= 1000 kg
Time 11 hour =60= 60 min,   1\;1 min =60= 60 s

Time alone runs on 6060s, so decimal instinct misfires there. 1.51.5 hours is not 150150 minutes but 1.5×60=901.5 \times 60 = 90; and 4545 minutes is 4560=34\frac{45}{60} = \frac34 of an hour =0.75= 0.75 hours — fractions and decimals earning their keep.

The area-unit trap

Since 11 m =100= 100 cm, is 11 m2=100^2 = 100 cm2^2? No. Area stretches in two directions at once:

1 m = 100 cm 1 m 1 m² = 100 × 100 = 10,000 cm²
If each side scales by 100, area scales by 100 × 100 — a square meter is 10,000 square centimeters.

A square with side 11 m =100= 100 cm is 100100 times wider and 100100 times taller, so

1 m2=100×100=10,000 cm2.1 \text{ m}^2 = 100 \times 100 = 10{,}000 \text{ cm}^2.

The little 2^2 on the unit is the warning sign — square the length conversion factor before using it.

Example 3 · Converting area

A notebook cover has area 0.060.06 m2^2. How many cm2^2 is that?

Solution. With 11 m2=10,000^2 = 10{,}000 cm2^2,

0.06×10,000=600 cm2.0.06 \times 10{,}000 = 600 \text{ cm}^2.

Sanity check: a cover is roughly 2020 cm ×\times 3030 cm =600= 600 cm2^2 — the size makes sense. Getting 0.06×100=60.06 \times 100 = 6 cm2^2 (coin-sized) means the trap snapped shut.
