Is a solution of the equation ?
Answer & solution
Judge by substitution: — the equality holds, so is a solution.

is neither true nor false on its own — true if is , false otherwise. An equality whose truth depends on the value of a letter is an equation; the letter is the unknown, and a value making it true is a solution.
Whether a value is a solution is settled by substitution, no debate required. Put in : ✓ — a solution. Put in : ✗ — not. To "solve" an equation is to hunt down the values that pass this test.
An equation is a two-pan balance. With the pans level, doing the same thing to both sides keeps them level — remove equal amounts, add equal amounts, scale both by the same factor.
These are the properties of equality: adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing both sides by the same number (nonzero, for division) preserves the equality. Equation solving uses these four tools and nothing else — the goal being to leave the unknown alone on one side.
Why "nonzero" only for division: dividing by was never defined in the first place (the fractions unit showed why cannot work). One more caution — multiplying both sides by yields : still a true equality, but every trace of the unknown is erased. Valid is not the same as useful.
If one operation clings to the unknown, apply its opposite to both sides and you're done.

Solution. (1) Subtract from both sides: . Check: ✓.
(2) Add : . Check: ✓.
(3) Divide by : . Check: ✓.
(4) Multiply by : . Check: ✓.
Don't flinch at negative solutions — in (1), "adding made it smaller" is itself the announcement that the solution is negative.
In , the unknown wears two layers — first , then on top. Layers come off last one first:
Check: ✓. This is precisely the "walking backwards" from the variables lesson's table problem — peeling by then to reach .
Reversing the order — dividing by first — gives : not wrong, but fractions pour out. Removing the outermost layer first (here the ) keeps the arithmetic clean.
Three times a number, plus , equals . Find the number.
Solution. Let the number be (translation is last lesson's skill):
Check against the words: three times is , plus is ✓.
The last line of every solution is the check — substitute the candidate into the original equation and confirm it's true. The original, not some midway version: if a mistake happened, it happened somewhere in the middle. One line of substitution certifies the entire solution — insurance has never been cheaper.
Equations with the unknown on both sides (), with parentheses, with fractions — Algebra 1's opening unit conquers them all with exactly these tools. The balance, reverse unwrapping, and the check: today's three take you the whole way there.

Solving , Minho "added to both sides" and answered . Show by checking that this is wrong, diagnose what failed in his method, then solve correctly.
Check: substituting into the original gives — false, so is not a solution.
Diagnosis: the property of equality itself is blameless — adding to both sides is perfectly legal. The trouble is that it produces , leaving no closer to being alone. Minho separated "same operation on both sides" from the actual goal, isolating . Since clings to , removal requires the opposite: subtracting .
Correct solution: subtract from both sides to get . Check: ✓.
Grading notes. Refutation by checking (1 pt); naming the failure — a legal move that ignores the isolation goal (1 pt); the correct solution with its check (1 pt). "The opposite of adding is subtracting" counts as a full diagnosis.
A number has added to it, and the whole result is then tripled, giving . Find the number.
The equation is . The layers went on as " then " — so they come off in what order?
"Add, then triple the whole" demands parentheses:
The outermost layer is — remove it first:
Check: ✓. Expanding instead to also works (), but with splitting cleanly by , dividing first is faster — choosing which layer to peel by looking at the numbers is a skill in itself.
A number trick: "Think of a number. Double it. Add . Halve the result. Subtract your original number." — the result is the same no matter the starting number. What is it, and why is it always the same?
Call the starting number , translate the instructions one by one, and simplify.
Let the starting number be and follow the script:
In the final step cancels — the result is regardless of where you started.
Verification: from : ✓; from : ✓.
The trick is an identity in disguise. "Add and halve" folds into "add " (that's — the distributive law!), so subtracting the original leaves exactly . Expressions are both the language that explains the magic and the tool that builds it — designing a trick that always lands on is now within reach.
