부호를 지우면 남는 것

이번 단원 내내 "0에서 떨어진 정도"라는 말을 썼다 — 줄다리기 규칙에서도, 부호 규칙에서도. 이 개념에 드디어 정식 이름을 붙인다.

정의절댓값

aa절댓값 a|a|는 수직선에서 aa00 사이의 거리다.

5=5,5=5,0=0.|5| = 5, \qquad |{-5}| = 5, \qquad |0| = 0.

−5와 5는 방향만 다를 뿐 0에서 같은 거리에 있다.

거리는 방향을 묻지 않으므로 절댓값은 음수가 될 수 없다(a0|a| \ge 0). 그리고 반대인 수끼리는 0에서 같은 거리에 있으므로 a=a|a| = |{-a}|555-5는 절댓값 55를 나눠 가진 짝이다. 거꾸로 말하면, 절댓값이 55인 수는 555-5이다(00만 예외로 하나).

실생활에서는 "크기만 궁금하고 방향은 상관없을 때" 절댓값이 나온다. 과자 봉지의 목표 무게가 500500 g일 때 486486 g도 512512 g도 불량이라면, 문제 삼는 것은 차이의 부호가 아니라 크기 — 오차 486500=14|486 - 500| = 14512500=12|512 - 500| = 12다.

절댓값 기호는 숨은 괄호다

3+1|{-3} + 1|은 얼마인가. 절댓값 기호는 분수 막대처럼 숨은 괄호라서, 안을 먼저 끝내고 거리를 잰다:

3+1=2=2.|{-3} + 1| = |{-2}| = 2.

주의

3+1|{-3} + 1|3+1=4|{-3}| + |1| = 4로 계산하면 안 된다. 절댓값은 덧셈 위로 그냥 지나가지 못한다 — 안에서 3-311이 먼저 줄다리기를 해서 2-2가 된 뒤에야 거리를 잰다. 242 \neq 4라는 반례 하나로 충분하다. (제곱근이 덧셈과 안 섞이던 것과 같은 무늬다.)

예제 1 · 절댓값 계산

다음을 계산하여라.

(1) 9|{-9}| (2) 47|4 - 7| (3) 6-|{-6}|

풀이. (1) 9-900의 거리: 99.

(2) 안부터: 3=3|{-3}| = 3.

(3) 바깥 부호는 절댓값 다음이다: 6=6|{-6}| = 6을 먼저 구하고 부호를 붙여 6-6. 6|{-6}|의 답이 66이라고 해서 6-|{-6}|까지 양수가 되지는 않는다.

두 수 사이의 거리

지난 차시에서 기온차를 "큰 수 빼기 작은 수"로 쟀다. 절댓값을 쓰면 어느 쪽이 큰지 몰라도 되는 공식이 된다:

두 수 a,b 사이의 거리=ab.\text{두 수 } a, b \text{ 사이의 거리} = |a - b|.

−2와 4 사이의 거리는 |4 − (−2)| = 6.

빼는 순서가 바뀌면 부호만 뒤집히고 거리는 같으므로 ab=ba|a - b| = |b - a| — 거리에 방향이 없다는 사실이 식에도 새겨져 있다.

음수의 대소, 정확한 언어로

정수 차시의 오개념 하나를 이제 완전한 문장으로 마무리할 수 있다. 8<3-8 < -3인 이유를 그때는 "수직선에서 왼쪽이라서"라고 했다. 절댓값의 언어로 다시 말하면:

음수끼리는 절댓값이 큰 쪽이 작다. 8=8>3=3|{-8}| = 8 > 3 = |{-3}|8-8이 0에서 더 멀리, 왼쪽으로 가 있기 때문이다. "8>38 > 3이니까 8>3-8 > -3"이라는 실수는 절댓값의 비교를 수 자체의 비교로 잘못 옮긴 것이다.

예제 2 · 절댓값 조건으로 수 찾기

x<4|x| < 4를 만족하는 정수 xx를 모두 구하여라.

풀이. 0에서 거리가 44 미만인 정수 — 수직선에서 4-444 사이(양 끝 제외)의 정수다:

3,  2,  1,  0,  1,  2,  3.-3, \; -2, \; -1, \; 0, \; 1, \; 2, \; 3.

모두 77개. 절댓값 조건은 늘 이렇게 0을 중심으로 한 구간을 그린다. 절댓값이 들어간 방정식과 부등식을 본격적으로 푸는 것은 Algebra 1에서다 — 그때도 무기는 오늘의 거리 관점 그대로다.

Goals

What's left when the sign is erased

All unit long we've been saying "how far from zero" — in the tug-of-war rule, in the sign rules. That idea finally gets its official name.

DefinitionAbsolute value

The absolute value a|a| of a number aa is the distance between aa and 00 on the number line.

5=5,5=5,0=0.|5| = 5, \qquad |{-5}| = 5, \qquad |0| = 0.

−5 and 5 differ only in direction — the same distance from 0.

Distance doesn't care about direction, so an absolute value is never negative (a0|a| \ge 0). Opposites sit at equal distances from zero, so a=a|a| = |{-a}|55 and 5-5 share the absolute value 55. Turned around: two numbers have absolute value 55, namely 55 and 5-5 (only 00 stands alone).

In daily life, absolute value shows up whenever size matters and direction doesn't. If a snack bag targets 500500 g and both 486486 g and 512512 g fail inspection, the complaint isn't the sign of the difference but its size — the errors 486500=14|486 - 500| = 14 and 512500=12|512 - 500| = 12.

The bars are hidden parentheses

What is 3+1|{-3} + 1|? Like a fraction bar, the absolute-value bars are hidden parentheses: finish the inside, then take the distance:

3+1=2=2.|{-3} + 1| = |{-2}| = 2.

Watch out

Computing 3+1|{-3} + 1| as 3+1=4|{-3}| + |1| = 4 is wrong. The bars do not pass through a plus — inside, 3-3 and 11 have their tug of war first, leaving 2-2, and only then is the distance taken. The single counterexample 242 \neq 4 settles it. (The same pattern as square roots refusing to split over addition.)

Example 1 · Evaluating

Compute:

(1) 9|{-9}| (2) 47|4 - 7| (3) 6-|{-6}|

Solution. (1) The distance from 9-9 to 00: 99.

(2) Inside first: 3=3|{-3}| = 3.

(3) The outer sign waits its turn: first 6=6|{-6}| = 6, then attach the sign: 6-6. The bars making 66 positive does not make 6-|{-6}| positive.

The distance between two numbers

Last lesson measured temperature gaps as "larger minus smaller." With absolute value, the formula stops caring which one is larger:

distance between a and b=ab.\text{distance between } a \text{ and } b = |a - b|.

The distance between −2 and 4 is |4 − (−2)| = 6.

Swapping the subtraction only flips the sign inside, not the distance, so ab=ba|a - b| = |b - a| — the fact that distance has no direction, written into the formula.

Ordering negatives, said precisely

One misconception from the integers lesson can now be closed out in full sentences. Back then, 8<3-8 < -3 was justified by "it's further left." In absolute-value language:

Among negatives, the one with the larger absolute value is smaller. 8=8>3=3|{-8}| = 8 > 3 = |{-3}| — so 8-8 sits farther from zero, on the left side. The error "8>38 > 3, so 8>3-8 > -3" mistakes a comparison of absolute values for a comparison of the numbers themselves.

Example 2 · Numbers satisfying an absolute-value condition

Find all integers xx with x<4|x| < 4.

Solution. Integers whose distance from 00 is less than 44 — those strictly between 4-4 and 44:

3,  2,  1,  0,  1,  2,  3.-3, \; -2, \; -1, \; 0, \; 1, \; 2, \; 3.

Seven in all. An absolute-value condition always carves out an interval centered at zero like this. Solving full absolute-value equations and inequalities belongs to Algebra 1 — and the weapon there will be exactly today's distance point of view.
