a a b b

이웃한 각 aabb는 함께 직선 하나를 채우므로 a+b=180°a + b = 180°. 반대쪽의 각 aa'도 같은 bb와 함께 직선을 채우므로 a+b=180°a' + b = 180°.

a=180°b=a.a = 180° - b = a'.

a b c a b c a + b + c = 180°
세 각 a, b, c를 이어 붙이면 평각 — a + b + c = 180°.

a+b+c=180°.a + b + c = 180°.

40+x+x=180    2x=140    x=70°.40 + x + x = 180 \implies 2x = 140 \implies x = 70°.

Goals
  • Measure angles in degrees and classify them as acute, right, obtuse, or straight.
  • Prove that vertical angles are equal, using two straight angles.
  • Know that a triangle's interior angles sum to 180°180°, and compute missing angles.
  • Classify triangles by sides and by angles, and use the equal base angles of an isosceles triangle.
  • Test whether three lengths can form a triangle (the triangle inequality).

Angles: measuring an opening

Two rays from a common point make an opening — an angle. Its size is measured in degrees (°°), by the convention that a full turn is 360°360°. The number 360360 has its historical reasons, but its mathematical kindness is plain: 360=23×32×5360 = 2^3 \times 3^2 \times 5 has so many divisors that a half turn (180°180°), a third (120°120°), a quarter (90°90°), and a sixth (60°60°) all come out whole.

Two benchmark angles: a quarter turn, 90°90°, is a right angle; a half turn, 180°180°, is a straight angle (a straight line). Everything else is classified against them:

40° 90° 130° 180°
Acute (under 90°), right, obtuse (between 90° and 180°), straight.

A first theorem: vertical angles

Two lines crossing at a point make four angles. The two facing each other across the crossing are vertical angles, and measuring shows them always equal. That is no accident — it can be proved.

a a b b
Facing angles match: the a's are equal, and so are the b's.

Adjacent angles aa and bb fill a straight line together, so a+b=180°a + b = 180°. The angle aa' opposite aa fills a straight line with the same bb, so a+b=180°a' + b = 180°. From the two equations,

a=180°b=a.a = 180° - b = a'.

Each equals the same thing (180°b180° - b), so they equal each other — knowing it for all cases without measuring a single one. That is the difference between a theorem and a measurement.

A triangle's angles sum to 180°

Tear the three corners off a paper triangle and fit them together at a point: for any triangle, the three angles fill a straight angle exactly:

a b c a b c a + b + c = 180°
The angles a, b, c reassemble into a straight angle — a + b + c = 180°.

a+b+c=180°.a + b + c = 180°.

The tearing is a compelling experiment but not a complete proof — no one can tear every triangle in the world (remember the principle: a claim holds only if it holds in all cases). The one-stroke proof for all triangles needs the properties of parallel lines, and it becomes an early highlight of the Geometry course. For now we use the fact freely, remembering that one debt is outstanding.

Example 1 · Missing angles

(1) The third angle of a triangle whose other angles are 55°55° and 60°60° (2) The other acute angle of a right triangle with one acute angle of 37°37°

Solution. (1) 1805560=65°180 - 55 - 60 = 65°.

(2) The right angle spends 90°90°, so the two acute angles share 90°90°: 9037=53°90 - 37 = 53°.

Check: (1) 55+60+65=18055 + 60 + 65 = 180 ✓. (2) 90+37+53=18090 + 37 + 53 = 180 ✓.

Classifying triangles

By sides — all three equal: equilateral; exactly two equal: isosceles; all different: scalene. By angles — all acute: acute triangle; one right angle: right triangle; one obtuse angle: obtuse triangle. (Two obtuse angles are impossible — those two alone would exceed 180°180°. The angle-sum theorem is already on duty.)

Isosceles triangles carry one bonus property: the two base angles opposite the equal sides are equal (proved via congruence, in Geometry). Combined with the angle sum, one angle unlocks all the rest.

Example 2 · Angles of an isosceles triangle

An isosceles triangle has apex angle 40°40°. Find each base angle.

Solution. The base angles are equal — call each xx:

40+x+x=180    2x=140    x=70°.40 + x + x = 180 \implies 2x = 140 \implies x = 70°.

Check: 40+70+70=18040 + 70 + 70 = 180 ✓ — the equations lesson's tools, at work on a shape for the first time.

When can three sides make a triangle?

Can rods of lengths 33, 44, and 88 form a triangle? Lay the long rod down; even spread wide, the other two reach only 3+4=73 + 4 = 7 — the ends never meet:

8 3 4 3 + 4 < 8
However wide 3 and 4 swing, they cannot bridge 8.

For a triangle, every two sides must sum to more than the third (the triangle inequality). Practical shortcut: only the longest side needs checking — do the two shorter sides outsum the longest? Here 3+4=7<83 + 4 = 7 < 8: impossible. The reason is bedrock: the shortest route between two points is the straight one (the side of length 88), so a bent route (3+43 + 4) being shorter would be absurd.
