분수는 무엇을 세는 수인가

피자 한 판을 똑같이 8조각으로 자르고 그중 3조각을 먹었다면, 먹은 양은 한 판의 38\frac{3}{8}이다. 아래 수 88전체를 똑같이 몇 조각으로 나눴는지, 위 수 33그중 몇 조각인지를 말한다.

정의분수

전체를 똑같이 bb조각으로 나눈 것 중 aa조각을 ab\dfrac{a}{b}라 쓴다. 위의 aa분자, 아래의 bb분모라고 한다. (분모는 00이 될 수 없다 — 전체를 0조각으로 나눈다는 말에는 뜻이 없다.)

특히 한 조각짜리 분수 12,13,14,\frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{3}, \frac{1}{4}, \ldots단위분수라고 한다. 모든 분수는 단위분수를 세는 수다 — 38\frac{3}{8}은 "18\frac18짜리 조각이 3개"라는 뜻이다.

수직선 위의 분수

정수 단원에서 수를 "수직선 위의 위치"로 보는 눈을 길렀다. 분수도 같은 직선 위에 산다. 0011 사이를 똑같이 2등분한 눈금이 12\frac12이고, 한 칸을 3등분하면 13\frac13짜리 눈금이 생긴다.

43\frac43은 "13\frac13짜리 조각 4개"이므로 11을 지나 13\frac13만큼 더 간 자리, 73\frac73은 조각 7개이므로 22를 지나 13\frac13만큼 더 간 자리다. 분수는 정수 눈금 사이의 빈틈을 메우는 수다. 그리고 수직선의 규칙은 그대로다 — 오른쪽에 있을수록 크다.

크기가 같은 분수

피자 반 판은 12\frac12이다. 그런데 같은 반 판을 4조각 기준으로 세면 2조각(24\frac24), 6조각 기준으로 세면 3조각(36\frac36)이다. 이름은 셋인데 양은 하나다.

그림에서 일어난 일을 말로 옮기면 이렇다. 각 조각을 2등분하면 색칠된 조각 수도 2배, 전체 조각 수도 2배가 된다 — 색칠된 은 변하지 않는다. 몇 등분을 하든 마찬가지이므로:

정의크기가 같은 분수 만들기

분자와 분모에 같은 수(0이 아닌)를 곱하거나, 같은 수로 나누면 크기가 같은 분수가 된다:

ab=a×kb×k.\frac{a}{b} = \frac{a \times k}{b \times k}.

주의

곱하거나 나누는 것만 허용된다. 분자·분모에 같은 수를 더하는 것은 크기를 바꾼다 — 12\frac12의 위아래에 1을 더하면 23\frac23인데, 23\frac23은 반보다 크다(3조각 중 2조각은 절반 이상이다). "위아래에 똑같이 했으니까 괜찮겠지"가 통하는 것은 곱셈·나눗셈뿐이다.

약분과 기약분수

규칙을 나누기 방향으로 쓰면 분수를 간단하게 만들 수 있다. 분자와 분모를 공통의 약수(공약수)로 나누는 것을 약분이라 한다.

예제 1 · 약분

1218\dfrac{12}{18}을 약분하여라.

풀이. 12121818은 둘 다 66으로 나누어진다:

1218=12÷618÷6=23.\frac{12}{18} = \frac{12 \div 6}{18 \div 6} = \frac{2}{3}.

한 번에 66이 안 보이면 나눠서 해도 된다 — 22로 나눠 69\frac69, 다시 33으로 나눠 23\frac23. 길은 달라도 도착지는 같다.

검산: 23\frac23의 분자·분모에 66을 곱하면 1218\frac{12}{18}로 되돌아온다 ✓.

더 이상 약분이 안 되는 분수 — 분자·분모의 공약수가 11뿐인 분수 — 를 기약분수라고 한다. 약분을 한 번에 끝내고 싶으면 공약수 중 가장 큰 것, 즉 최대공약수로 나누면 된다.

예제 2 · 기약분수 만들기

3648\dfrac{36}{48}을 기약분수로 나타내어라.

풀이. 36364848의 최대공약수는 1212다:

3648=36÷1248÷12=34.\frac{36}{48} = \frac{36 \div 12}{48 \div 12} = \frac{3}{4}.

3344의 공약수는 11뿐이므로 여기서 끝 — 기약분수다.

검산: 3×12=363 \times 12 = 36, 4×12=484 \times 12 = 48 ✓. 단계별로 가도 같다: 3648182491234\frac{36}{48} \to \frac{18}{24} \to \frac{9}{12} \to \frac{3}{4} ✓.

참고

어느 길로 약분하든 끝까지 간 결과는 항상 같은 하나의 기약분수다. 예제 2에서 1212로 한 번에 가든 2,2,32, 2, 3으로 세 번에 가든 34\frac34에 닿았다. 이 "도착지 유일" 사실은 소인수분해로 증명할 수 있는데, 그 도구는 경시 과정의 정수론에서 만든다. 지금은 안심하고 쓰자.

크기 비교: 세 가지 잣대

같은 분모끼리 — 조각 크기가 같으니 조각 수가 많은 쪽이 크다: 58<78\frac58 < \frac78.

같은 분자끼리 — 조각 가 같으니 조각이 큰 쪽, 즉 분모가 작은 쪽이 크다.

같은 세 조각이라도 4등분 조각이 8등분 조각보다 크다: 3/4 > 3/8.

전체를 4등분한 조각은 8등분한 조각보다 크다. 같은 3조각이면 34>38\frac34 > \frac38이다. "분모가 크면 수도 크겠지"라는 직감을 여기서 확실히 교정해 두자 — 분모가 커질수록 조각은 잘게 쪼개진다.

12\frac12을 잣대로 — 분모의 절반과 분자를 비교한다. 59\frac59는 9조각 중 5조각인데, 절반은 4.54.5조각이므로 59>12\frac59 > \frac12. 반대로 37\frac37은 절반(3.53.5조각)에 못 미치니 37<12\frac37 < \frac12. 그러면 통분 없이도 37<12<59\frac37 < \frac12 < \frac59 같은 비교가 즉시 끝난다.

예제 3 · 비교 연습

다음 각 쌍의 크기를 비교하여라.

(1) 58\dfrac5878\dfrac78 (2) 45\dfrac4549\dfrac49 (3) 59\dfrac5912\dfrac12

풀이. (1) 같은 분모: 조각 수 비교로 58<78\frac58 < \frac78.

(2) 같은 분자: 5등분 조각이 9등분 조각보다 크므로 45>49\frac45 > \frac49.

(3) 9조각의 절반은 4.54.5조각. 5>4.55 > 4.5이므로 59>12\frac59 > \frac12.

검산: (2)를 그림 없이 확인 — 45\frac45는 절반(2.5조각)을 훌쩍 넘고 49\frac49는 절반(4.5조각) 미만이므로 12\frac12 잣대로도 45>49\frac45 > \frac49 ✓.

분모도 분자도 다른 일반적인 비교(23\frac23 vs 35\frac35 같은)는 두 분수를 **같은 분모로 바꾸는 기술(통분)**이 있어야 깔끔하게 끝난다 — 다음 차시 덧셈·뺄셈과 함께 다룬다.

가분수와 대분수

분자가 분모보다 작은 분수(38\frac38처럼 11 미만)를 진분수, 분자가 분모 이상인 분수(73\frac73처럼 11 이상)를 가분수라고 한다. 가분수는 정수 부분을 앞으로 빼서 쓸 수도 있다: 73=2+13\frac73 = 2 + \frac13, 줄여서 2132\tfrac13. 이런 표기를 대분수라고 한다.

예제 4 · 가분수 ↔ 대분수

(1) 235\dfrac{23}{5}를 대분수로, (2) 3273\tfrac27을 가분수로 나타내어라.

풀이. (1) 2323조각에서 55조각씩 묶으면 11이 4개 나오고 3조각이 남는다 (23=4×5+323 = 4 \times 5 + 3):

235=435.\frac{23}{5} = 4\tfrac35.

(2) 3317\frac17짜리 조각 3×7=213 \times 7 = 21개이고, 여기에 2조각을 더하면:

327=21+27=237.3\tfrac27 = \frac{21 + 2}{7} = \frac{23}{7}.

검산: (1) 4×5+3=234 \times 5 + 3 = 23 ✓. (2) 23=3×7+223 = 3 \times 7 + 2 ✓.

수직선 그림으로 돌아가면 대분수의 뜻이 그대로 보인다 — 73\frac73이 "22를 지나 13\frac13만큼 더"에 있었는데, 그 위치를 이름으로 옮긴 것이 2132\tfrac13이다.

참고

대분수 2132\tfrac132+132 + \frac13의 줄임 표기다. 나중에 문자를 쓰기 시작하면 나란히 쓰기가 곱셈을 뜻하게 되어(2x2x2×x2 \times x다) 이 표기와 충돌한다. 그래서 대수부터는 가분수 쪽을 주로 쓰게 된다 — 대분수는 양을 실감하기 좋고, 가분수는 계산하기 좋다.

What is a fraction counting?

Cut a pizza into 8 equal slices and eat 3 of them: you've eaten 38\frac{3}{8} of the pizza. The bottom number says how many equal pieces the whole was cut into; the top number says how many of those pieces you're talking about.

DefinitionFraction

Cutting a whole into bb equal pieces and taking aa of them is written ab\dfrac{a}{b}. The top number aa is the numerator; the bottom number bb is the denominator. (The denominator can't be 00 — "cut a whole into zero equal pieces" doesn't mean anything.)

The one-piece fractions 12,13,14,\frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{3}, \frac{1}{4}, \ldots are called unit fractions. Every fraction is a count of unit fractions: 38\frac{3}{8} means "3 pieces of size 18\frac18."

Fractions on the number line

The integers unit trained you to see numbers as positions on a line. Fractions live on the same line. Split the gap between 00 and 11 into 2 equal parts and the new tick is 12\frac12; split a gap into 3 parts and you get ticks worth 13\frac13 each.

43\frac43 is "4 pieces of size 13\frac13," so it sits 13\frac13 past 11; and 73\frac73, being 7 pieces, sits 13\frac13 past 22. Fractions fill in the gaps between the integer ticks — and the line's rule is unchanged: farther right means greater.

Equivalent fractions

Half a pizza is 12\frac12. Count that same half in quarters and it's 2 pieces (24\frac24); count it in sixths and it's 3 pieces (36\frac36). Three names, one amount.

Put the picture into words: cutting every piece in half doubles the number of shaded pieces and doubles the total number of pieces — the shaded amount doesn't budge. The same works for cutting each piece into any number of parts, so:

Multiplying or dividing the numerator and denominator by the same nonzero number produces an equivalent fraction:

ab=a×kb×k.\frac{a}{b} = \frac{a \times k}{b \times k}.

Watch out

Only multiplying and dividing are allowed. Adding the same number to the top and bottom changes the value: doing it to 12\frac12 gives 23\frac23, and 23\frac23 is more than a half (2 pieces out of 3 is more than half of them). "I did the same thing to both" is only a defense for multiplication and division.

Reducing to simplest form

Run the rule in the dividing direction and fractions get simpler. Dividing the numerator and denominator by a common factor is called reducing (or simplifying).

Example 1 · Reducing

Reduce 1218\dfrac{12}{18}.

Solution. Both 1212 and 1818 divide by 66:

1218=12÷618÷6=23.\frac{12}{18} = \frac{12 \div 6}{18 \div 6} = \frac{2}{3}.

If the 66 doesn't jump out, go in steps — divide by 22 to get 69\frac69, then by 33 to get 23\frac23. Different roads, same destination.

Check: multiplying 23\frac23 top and bottom by 66 brings back 1218\frac{12}{18} ✓.

A fraction that can't be reduced any further — the only common factor of its top and bottom is 11 — is in simplest form (also called lowest terms). To finish in one step, divide by the largest common factor of the two numbers: their greatest common factor.

Example 2 · Simplest form

Write 3648\dfrac{36}{48} in simplest form.

Solution. The greatest common factor of 3636 and 4848 is 1212:

3648=36÷1248÷12=34.\frac{36}{48} = \frac{36 \div 12}{48 \div 12} = \frac{3}{4}.

The only common factor of 33 and 44 is 11, so we're done — simplest form.

Check: 3×12=363 \times 12 = 36 and 4×12=484 \times 12 = 48 ✓. Step by step also lands in the same place: 3648182491234\frac{36}{48} \to \frac{18}{24} \to \frac{9}{12} \to \frac{3}{4} ✓.

Note

Whichever road you reduce along, fully reducing always ends at the same one simplest form. In Example 2, jumping by 1212 or stepping by 2,2,32, 2, 3 both landed on 34\frac34. This "unique destination" fact can be proved with prime factorization — a tool built in the competition track's number theory. For now, use it with confidence.

Comparing: three yardsticks

Same denominator — the pieces are the same size, so more pieces means more: 58<78\frac58 < \frac78.

Same numerator — the piece count is the same, so the bigger pieces win: the smaller denominator gives the larger fraction.

Three pieces each, but quarters are bigger than eighths: 3/4 > 3/8.

A quarter of the bar is bigger than an eighth of it, so with 3 pieces each, 34>38\frac34 > \frac38. This is the place to fix the tempting instinct "bigger denominator, bigger number" — a bigger denominator means the whole is chopped finer.

Against 12\frac12 — compare the numerator with half the denominator. 59\frac59 is 5 pieces out of 9, and half of 9 pieces is 4.54.5 pieces, so 59>12\frac59 > \frac12. Meanwhile 37\frac37 falls short of half (which would be 3.53.5 pieces), so 37<12\frac37 < \frac12. Now comparisons like 37<12<59\frac37 < \frac12 < \frac59 finish instantly, no common denominators needed.

Example 3 · Comparison practice

Compare each pair.

(1) 58\dfrac58 and 78\dfrac78 (2) 45\dfrac45 and 49\dfrac49 (3) 59\dfrac59 and 12\dfrac12

Solution. (1) Same denominator: count pieces — 58<78\frac58 < \frac78.

(2) Same numerator: fifths are bigger pieces than ninths, so 45>49\frac45 > \frac49.

(3) Half of 9 pieces is 4.54.5 pieces, and 5>4.55 > 4.5, so 59>12\frac59 > \frac12.

Check on (2) by a different yardstick: 45\frac45 is well past half (2.5 pieces) while 49\frac49 is under half (4.5 pieces), so the benchmark 12\frac12 also gives 45>49\frac45 > \frac49 ✓.

For a fully general pair — say 23\frac23 versus 35\frac35, with nothing matching — the clean tool is rewriting both with the same denominator. That technique arrives next lesson, hand in hand with addition and subtraction.

Improper fractions and mixed numbers

A fraction whose numerator is smaller than its denominator (like 38\frac38, worth less than 11) is a proper fraction; one whose numerator is at least the denominator (like 73\frac73) is an improper fraction. An improper fraction can also be written with its whole-number part pulled out front: 73=2+13\frac73 = 2 + \frac13, abbreviated 2132\tfrac13. That form is a mixed number.

Example 4 · Converting both ways

Write (1) 235\dfrac{23}{5} as a mixed number and (2) 3273\tfrac27 as an improper fraction.

Solution. (1) Bundle the 23 pieces into groups of 5: four wholes with 3 pieces left over (23=4×5+323 = 4 \times 5 + 3):

235=435.\frac{23}{5} = 4\tfrac35.

(2) The 33 is worth 3×7=213 \times 7 = 21 sevenths; add the 2 extra pieces:

327=21+27=237.3\tfrac27 = \frac{21 + 2}{7} = \frac{23}{7}.

Check: (1) 4×5+3=234 \times 5 + 3 = 23 ✓. (2) 23=3×7+223 = 3 \times 7 + 2 ✓.

Back on the number line, the mixed form is just the position read aloud: 73\frac73 sat "13\frac13 past 22," and 2132\tfrac13 says exactly that.

Note

A mixed number like 2132\tfrac13 abbreviates 2+132 + \frac13. Once letters arrive, writing things side by side will mean multiplication (2x2x means 2×x2 \times x), which collides with this abbreviation — so from algebra onward, improper fractions do most of the work. Mixed numbers are for feeling the size; improper fractions are for computing.
