Algebra 2Algebra 2 · 2. 2. Quadratics & Complex Numbers

x2=1.x^2 = -1.

(2+3i)+(4i)=6+2i,(2+3i)(4i)=82i+12i3i2=8+10i+3=11+10i.(2 + 3i) + (4 - i) = 6 + 2i, \qquad (2 + 3i)(4 - i) = 8 - 2i + 12i - 3i^2 = 8 + 10i + 3 = 11 + 10i.

열쇠는 켤레복소수 zˉ=abi\bar z = a - bi(허수부의 부호만 반전)다:

zzˉ=(a+bi)(abi)=a2(bi)2=a2+b2z \bar z = (a + bi)(a - bi) = a^2 - (bi)^2 = a^2 + b^2

51+2i=5(12i)(1+2i)(12i)=5(12i)1+4=12i.\frac{5}{1 + 2i} = \frac{5(1 - 2i)}{(1 + 2i)(1 - 2i)} = \frac{5(1 - 2i)}{1 + 4} = 1 - 2i.

zzˉ=a2+b2z \bar z = a^2 + b^2에는 이름이 붙는다 — z=a2+b2|z| = \sqrt{a^2 + b^2}zz크기(절댓값)라 한다. 거리 공식과 똑같은 꼴인 것은 우연이 아니다: 복소수를 좌표평면의 점 (a,b)(a, b)로 그리는 관점이 삼각함수 단원에서 기다리고 있다.

i1=i,i2=1,i3=i2i=i,i4=(i2)2=1i^1 = i, \qquad i^2 = -1, \qquad i^3 = i^2 \cdot i = -i, \qquad i^4 = (i^2)^2 = 1

i2026i^{2026}: 2026=4×506+22026 = 4 \times 506 + 2이므로 i2026=i2=1i^{2026} = i^2 = -1.

규칙 ab=ab\sqrt{a}\sqrt{b} = \sqrt{ab}는 음수에서 깨진다

49=2i3i=6(36=6).\sqrt{-4} \cdot \sqrt{-9} = 2i \cdot 3i = -6 \qquad (\ne \sqrt{36} = 6).

Goals
  • Introduce the new number ii with i2=1i^2 = -1, and compute with complex numbers a+bia + bi.
  • Handle division via conjugates (realizing the denominator).
  • Know the period-4 powers of ii and the trap in negative square root notation.

How numbers have always grown

353 - 5 has no answer among the natural numbers — so negatives were invented. 3÷53 \div 5 has none among the integers — fractions. x2=2x^2 = 2 has none among the rationals — irrationals like 2\sqrt2 were admitted. At every wall of "unsolvable," mathematics chose not to break the wall but to enlarge the country of numbers.

Now the last wall:

x2=1.x^2 = -1.

No real number squares to a negative, so no solution lives among the reals — and the same move is played once more. Introduce a new number whose square is 1-1, and call it ii.

The expansion of the number system — at every wall, a larger country.
Definitionimaginary unit, complex number

The number ii with i2=1i^2 = -1 is the imaginary unit. For real aa, bb, a number of the form a+bia + bi is a complex number, with real part aa and imaginary part bb. Two complex numbers are equal exactly when their real parts agree and their imaginary parts agree.

The name "imaginary" is a fossil of the era that distrusted these numbers — negatives, too, were once called "absurd." Today complex numbers are the standard language of AC circuits and wave analysis: imaginary in name, working in practice.

Arithmetic: like polynomials, then i2=1i^2 = -1

Adding, subtracting, and multiplying complex numbers is polynomial arithmetic with ii as the letter — with the single extra rule that any i2i^2 becomes 1-1.

Example

(2+3i)+(4i)=6+2i,(2+3i)(4i)=82i+12i3i2=8+10i+3=11+10i.(2 + 3i) + (4 - i) = 6 + 2i, \qquad (2 + 3i)(4 - i) = 8 - 2i + 12i - 3i^2 = 8 + 10i + 3 = 11 + 10i.

Division needs one new tool — the ii must be cleared from the denominator. The key is the conjugate zˉ=abi\bar z = a - bi (imaginary part's sign flipped):

zzˉ=(a+bi)(abi)=a2(bi)2=a2+b2z \bar z = (a + bi)(a - bi) = a^2 - (bi)^2 = a^2 + b^2

— always a real number (the difference-of-squares pattern erases the ii). So multiplying top and bottom by the denominator's conjugate realizes the denominator:

Example

51+2i=5(12i)(1+2i)(12i)=5(12i)1+4=12i.\frac{5}{1 + 2i} = \frac{5(1 - 2i)}{(1 + 2i)(1 - 2i)} = \frac{5(1 - 2i)}{1 + 4} = 1 - 2i.

A cousin of rationalizing denominators (multiplying 12+1\frac{1}{\sqrt2 + 1} by 21\sqrt2 - 1) — the strategy is identical: multiply by the "conjugate" of what you want gone.

The quantity zzˉ=a2+b2z \bar z = a^2 + b^2 earns a name — z=a2+b2|z| = \sqrt{a^2 + b^2} is the modulus (absolute value) of zz. That it matches the distance formula is no coincidence: the view of a complex number as the point (a,b)(a, b) awaits in the trigonometry unit.

Powers of ii: a period-4 clock

i1=i,i2=1,i3=i2i=i,i4=(i2)2=1i^1 = i, \qquad i^2 = -1, \qquad i^3 = i^2 \cdot i = -i, \qquad i^4 = (i^2)^2 = 1

— and from i5=ii^5 = i the same four values repeat. The exponent's remainder mod 44 decides the value:

Example

i2026i^{2026}: since 2026=4×506+22026 = 4 \times 506 + 2, we get i2026=i2=1i^{2026} = i^2 = -1.

Remainder arithmetic has become the clock of complex computation — that the period-4 cycle is geometrically a rotation is revealed in the trigonometry unit.

Watch out

Negative square roots must be converted — extract the ii first: write 9=3i\sqrt{-9} = 3i before anything else. The rule ab=ab\sqrt{a}\sqrt{b} = \sqrt{ab} breaks for negatives —

49=2i3i=6(36=6).\sqrt{-4} \cdot \sqrt{-9} = 2i \cdot 3i = -6 \qquad (\ne \sqrt{36} = 6).

Multiply the radicals without extracting ii and the sign comes out wrong.
