  • a>1a > 1(증가)과 0<a<10 < a < 1(감소)을 구분하고, 변환을 적용한다.

y=2xy = 2^x의 점을 찍자: ,14,12,1,2,4,8,\dots, \frac14, \frac12, 1, 2, 4, 8, \dots한 칸마다 두 배. 오른쪽으로 폭발적으로 크고, 왼쪽으로는 00에 한없이 다가간다 — y=0y = 0(xx축)이 수평 점근선이다.

y=(12)xy = \left(\frac12\right)^x2x2^{-x}2x2^xyy축 반사다: 감소하며 오른쪽으로 소멸한다.

2x1=2x21=122x2^{x - 1} = 2^x \cdot 2^{-1} = \frac12 \cdot 2^x

지수법칙 ax+c=acaxa^{x+c} = a^c a^x가 그 이유이고, "매 단위마다 같은 배율로 변한다"는 지수함수의 정체성이 여기 들어 있다.

예제

y=2x1+3y = 2^{x-1} + 3: 오른쪽 11, 위로 33 — 점근선이 y=3y = 3으로 이사하고, 치역은 (3,)(3, \infty), yy절편은 21+3=722^{-1} + 3 = \frac72.

32x1=27=33    2x1=3    x=2.3^{2x - 1} = 27 = 3^3 \;\Longrightarrow\; 2x - 1 = 3 \;\Longrightarrow\; x = 2.

(12)x<18=(12)3    x>3\left(\frac12\right)^x < \frac18 = \left(\frac12\right)^3 \;\Longrightarrow\; x > 3

Goals
  • Establish the exponential function y=axy = a^x — base conditions and graph properties.
  • Distinguish a>1a > 1 (growth) from 0<a<10 < a < 1 (decay), and apply transformations.
  • Solve exponential equations and inequalities via one-to-oneness — flipping the inequality when the base is below 11.

The variable climbs into the exponent

Every function so far kept its variable in the base (x2x^2, x\sqrt x, …). The exponential function y=axy = a^x lifts it into the exponent — the language of growth and decay, and this unit's protagonist.

The base requires a>0a > 0, a1a \ne 1 — negative bases bred contradictions with rational exponents (last unit), and a=1a = 1 is the constant 11, unworthy of family membership. That the exponent xx accepts all reals comes from filling in the irrationals continuously (222^{\sqrt2} as the limit of 21.4,21.41,2^{1.4}, 2^{1.41}, \dots — formalized in later courses).

The graph: explosion and extinction

Plot y=2xy = 2^x: ,14,12,1,2,4,8,\dots, \frac14, \frac12, 1, 2, 4, 8, \dotsdoubling every step. Explosive growth rightward; leftward, an endless approach to 00the xx-axis (y=0y = 0) is a horizontal asymptote.

And y=(12)x=2xy = \left(\frac12\right)^x = 2^{-x} — the yy-axis reflection of 2x2^x: decreasing, dying out rightward.

x y O -4 -3 -2 -1 1 2 3 4 2 4 6 8 y = 2ˣ y = (1/2)ˣ (0, 1) (1, 2) (−1, 2)
2ˣ and (1/2)ˣ — a mirror pair across the y-axis, both asymptotic to the x-axis.
a>1a > 1 0<a<10 < a < 1
behavior increasing decreasing
shared domain R\mathbb R, range (0,)(0, \infty), yy-intercept 11, asymptote y=0y = 0, one-to-one

Engrave the always positive property — ax=0a^x = 0 and ax<0a^x < 0 have no solutions.

A special exchange rate: shifts are stretches

In the stretches lesson, power functions traded horizontal stretches for vertical ones. Exponentials hold a different privilege — horizontal shifts equal vertical stretches:

2x1=2x21=122x2^{x - 1} = 2^x \cdot 2^{-1} = \frac12 \cdot 2^x

— a right shift of 11 is the same graph as a vertical scaling by 12\frac12. The law ax+c=acaxa^{x+c} = a^c a^x is the reason, and inside it lives the exponential's identity: equal steps multiply by equal factors.

Example

y=2x1+3y = 2^{x-1} + 3: right 11, up 33 — the asymptote moves to y=3y = 3, the range is (3,)(3, \infty), and the yy-intercept is 21+3=722^{-1} + 3 = \frac72.

Equations and inequalities: the power of one-to-one

One-to-oneness licenses comparing exponents once bases match:

32x1=27=33    2x1=3    x=2.3^{2x - 1} = 27 = 3^3 \;\Longrightarrow\; 2x - 1 = 3 \;\Longrightarrow\; x = 2.

Inequalities run on the same principle — but decreasing bases (0<a<10 < a < 1) flip the inequality:

(12)x<18=(12)3    x>3\left(\frac12\right)^x < \frac18 = \left(\frac12\right)^3 \;\Longrightarrow\; x > 3

(decreasing: smaller values mean larger exponents).

Watch out

Two traps — first, missing the flip for 0<a<10 < a < 1 inequalities (a cousin of multiplying by negatives). Second, confusing 2x-2^x with (2)x(-2)^x: the former is a reflection of 2x2^x (defined), the latter undefined (negative base). And equations with un-matchable bases (2x=52^x = 5) remain unsolvable — their key (the logarithm) is the very next lesson.
