Graphs of Sine & Cosine

Algebra 2Algebra 2 · 8. 8. Introduction to Trigonometric Functions

  • y=Asin(B(xc))+dy = A\sin(B(x - c)) + d에 첫 단원의 변환 문법을 적용한다.

θ π/2 π 3π/2 sin cos

cosθ=sin ⁣(θ+π2)\cos\theta = \sin\!\left(\theta + \frac\pi2\right)

새 점의 yy좌표가 옛 점의 xx좌표다: sin(θ+π2)=x=cosθ\sin(\theta + \frac\pi2) = x = \cos\theta. \blacksquare

y=Asin(B(xc))+dy = A\sin(B(x - c)) + d는 첫 단원의 변환 네 가지가 전부 출동한 꼴이다:

AA 세로 A|A| 진폭 A|A|
BB 가로 1B\frac1B 주기 2πB\dfrac{2\pi}{B}

y=3sin2x+1y = 3\sin 2x + 1: 진폭 33, 주기 π\pi, 중심선 y=1y = 1 — 최댓값 1+3=41 + 3 = 4, 최솟값 13=21 - 3 = -2. 한 주기 안에 파동이 두 번 — B=2B = 2는 시계를 두 배 빠르게 돌린다.

tan(θ+π)=yx=yx=tanθ\tan(\theta + \pi) = \frac{-y}{-x} = \frac yx = \tan\theta

Goals
  • Unwrap the unit circle into the wave graphs of y=sinxy = \sin x and y=cosxy = \cos x; read period and amplitude.
  • Apply Unit 1's transformation grammar to y=Asin(B(xc))+dy = A\sin(B(x - c)) + d.
  • Build the tangent graph (period π\pi, asymptotes), and model periodic phenomena.

Unwrap the circle, get a wave

Put the angle θ\theta on the horizontal axis and the unit-circle point's yy-coordinate sinθ\sin\theta on the vertical, then roll θ\theta forward from 00 — as the point circles, its height rises and falls, and the graph is a wave:

θ π/2 π 3π/2 sin cos
Unwrapping the height around the circle draws the sine curve — cosine is the same wave, π/2 ahead.

Every 2π2\pi returns to the same point (sin(x+2π)=sinx\sin(x + 2\pi) = \sin x), so the wave repeats with period 2π2\pi. Heights stay between 1-1 and 11amplitude 11. The graph of cosx\cos x (the xx-coordinate) is the same wave shifted left by π2\frac\pi2:

cosθ=sin ⁣(θ+π2)\cos\theta = \sin\!\left(\theta + \frac\pi2\right)

Proof — the point at angle θ+π2\theta + \frac\pi2 is the point at θ\theta, call it (x,y)(x, y), rotated 90°90° about the origin; geometry's rotation formula was (x,y)(y,x)(x, y) \mapsto (-y, x). The new point's yy-coordinate is the old point's xx-coordinate: sin(θ+π2)=x=cosθ\sin(\theta + \frac\pi2) = x = \cos\theta. \blacksquare

The transformation grammar, restaged

y=Asin(B(xc))+dy = A\sin(B(x - c)) + d deploys all four transformations from Unit 1:

part effect name
AA vertical ×A\times|A| amplitude A|A|
BB horizontal ×1B\times\frac1B period 2πB\dfrac{2\pi}{B}
cc right shift cc phase shift
dd up shift dd midline y=dy = d
Example

y=3sin2x+1y = 3\sin 2x + 1: amplitude 33, period π\pi, midline y=1y = 1 — maximum 1+3=41 + 3 = 4, minimum 13=21 - 3 = -2. Two full waves per old period — B=2B = 2 runs the clock twice as fast.

Caution — the shift in y=sin(2xπ2)y = \sin(2x - \frac\pi2) is not π2\frac\pi2. Factor out BB first: sin2(xπ4)\sin 2(x - \frac\pi4) — right by π4\frac\pi4. Unit 1's order rule for stretches and shifts applies verbatim.

Tangent: a different beast, period π\pi

tanθ\tan\theta is the ray's slope — and the ray at θ+π\theta + \pi is the same line extended the other way (the antipode (x,y)(-x, -y)):

tan(θ+π)=yx=yx=tanθ\tan(\theta + \pi) = \frac{-y}{-x} = \frac yx = \tan\theta

— period π\pi, not 2π2\pi. Where cosθ=0\cos\theta = 0, at θ=π2+kπ\theta = \frac\pi2 + k\pi, it is undefined and a vertical asymptote stands: as the ray nears vertical, its slope blows up. No maximum, no minimum — each period sweeps all of -\infty to \infty, a graph kin to the rational functions' vertical asymptotes.

The language of periodic phenomena

Whatever repeats — tides, Ferris wheels, seasons, sound — is modeled by a sinusoid: assemble from the midline dd (average), amplitude AA (swing), and period (time per cycle) via B=2πperiodB = \frac{2\pi}{\text{period}}. The exercises build a Ferris wheel and a tide.

Watch out

The period is 2πB\frac{2\pi}B, not BB — larger BB makes the wave denser (shorter period). The phase shift is the cc after factoring out BB. And sine's amplitude 11 merely translates "the unit circle has radius 11" — a radius rr makes the height rsinθr\sin\theta.
