Algebra 2Algebra 2 · 10. 10. Introduction to Conic Sections

  • 점근선 y=±baxy = \pm\dfrac ba x를 증명하고, c2=a2+b2c^2 = a^2 + b^2을 타원과 대비한다.

(c2a2)x2a2y2=a2(c2a2).(c^2 - a^2)x^2 - a^2y^2 = a^2(c^2 - a^2).

x2a2y2b2=1(b2=c2a2,    c2=a2+b2)\boxed{\frac{x^2}{a^2} - \frac{y^2}{b^2} = 1} \qquad (b^2 = c^2 - a^2, \;\text{곧}\; c^2 = a^2 + b^2)

타원과의 대차대조표: 방정식의 ++-로, c2=a2b2c^2 = a^2 - b^2c2=a2+b2c^2 = a^2 + b^2으로. 초점이 꼭짓점보다 바깥(c>ac > a)에 있으니 cc가 가장 큰 수다. xx절편 ±a\pm a(꼭짓점)는 있지만 yy절편은 없다(x=0x = 0이면 y2b2=1-\frac{y^2}{b^2} = 1 — 불가능).

yy에 대해 풀면 y=±bax2a2y = \pm\dfrac ba\sqrt{x^2 - a^2}. xx가 커질 때 이것이 직선 y=±baxy = \pm\dfrac ba x와 얼마나 다른가 — 켤레로 유리화하면(무리식의 그 기술):

ba(xx2a2)=baa2x+x2a2    0\frac ba\left(x - \sqrt{x^2 - a^2}\right) = \frac ba \cdot \frac{a^2}{x + \sqrt{x^2 - a^2}} \;\longrightarrow\; 0

y=±bax(점근선)y = \pm\frac ba x \qquad (\text{점근선})

xy=kxy = k: 낯익은 쌍곡선

Goals
  • Define the hyperbola as the locus with a constant difference of distances to two foci, obtaining x2a2y2b2=1\dfrac{x^2}{a^2} - \dfrac{y^2}{b^2} = 1.
  • Prove the asymptotes y=±baxy = \pm\dfrac ba x, and contrast c2=a2+b2c^2 = a^2 + b^2 with the ellipse.
  • Confirm that the reciprocal graph xy=kxy = k is a tilted hyperbola, and meet position-finding applications.

Change the sum to a difference

Alter one word in the ellipse's definition:

The locus of points whose distances to two foci FF, FF' have a constant difference (in absolute value) is a hyperbola.

Let the difference be 2a2a (with 0<2a<FF0 < 2a < \overline{FF'}). A "difference" runs two ways — FF nearer, or FF' nearer — so the curve is born in two branches: the "hyper-pair" of its name.

F F′ P r₁ r₂ r₂ − r₁ = 2a
The difference r₂ − r₁ stays constant — two branches, two asymptotes.

The equation: the ellipse derivation rerun, one sign flipped

With foci (±c,0)(\pm c, 0) and difference 2a2a, the same square-twice route as the ellipse (worked out in exercise p04) lands at

(c2a2)x2a2y2=a2(c2a2).(c^2 - a^2)x^2 - a^2y^2 = a^2(c^2 - a^2).

This time c>ac > a, so c2a2>0c^2 - a^2 > 0 — name it b2b^2:

x2a2y2b2=1(b2=c2a2,  i.e.  c2=a2+b2)\boxed{\frac{x^2}{a^2} - \frac{y^2}{b^2} = 1} \qquad (b^2 = c^2 - a^2, \;\text{i.e.}\; c^2 = a^2 + b^2)

The balance sheet against the ellipse: the equation's ++ turns -, and c2=a2b2c^2 = a^2 - b^2 turns c2=a2+b2c^2 = a^2 + b^2. The foci sit outside the vertices (c>ac > a), making cc the largest of the three. The xx-intercepts ±a\pm a (the vertices) exist; yy-intercepts don't (x=0x = 0 forces y2b2=1-\frac{y^2}{b^2} = 1 — impossible).

Asymptotes: the lines it forever approaches

Solving for yy: y=±bax2a2y = \pm\dfrac ba\sqrt{x^2 - a^2}. How far is this from the line y=±baxy = \pm\dfrac ba x as xx grows? Rationalize by the conjugate (the radical-expressions technique):

ba(xx2a2)=baa2x+x2a2    0\frac ba\left(x - \sqrt{x^2 - a^2}\right) = \frac ba \cdot \frac{a^2}{x + \sqrt{x^2 - a^2}} \;\longrightarrow\; 0

— the gap dwindles to 00. The curve approaches the lines

y=±bax(asymptotes)y = \pm\frac ba x \qquad (\text{asymptotes})

without ever touching. The rational functions' asymptotes, returned — and a practical sketching recipe: draw the 2a×2b2a \times 2b rectangle and extend its diagonals — those are the asymptotes, and each branch leaves its vertex hugging them.

xy=kxy = k: the hyperbola you already knew

The reciprocal graph y=kxy = \dfrac kx — that curve from the rational functions unit — is a hyperbola too: two branches, two asymptotes (the axes), origin symmetry, every credential in place. It merely sits tilted 45°45° from standard position. For xy=1xy = 1 the axis is y=xy = x and the vertices (±1,±1)(\pm 1, \pm 1) — that its focal distance difference truly is constant gets a complete proof in the final exercise (p13).

Constant differences: locating by listening

Two stations hear the same sound (thunder, a blast) at different times — time gap ×\times speed of sound == the difference of distances, so the source lies on a hyperbola with the stations as foci. A third station gives a second hyperbola, and the intersection pins the location — the navigation system LORAN ran on this principle before satellite positioning.

Watch out

The b2b^2 relation flips against the ellipse — for hyperbolas c2=a2+b2c^2 = a^2 + b^2 (addition): cc is always largest. The variable of the term carrying the +1+1 owns the transverse axis (vertices and foci) — y29x216=1\dfrac{y^2}{9} - \dfrac{x^2}{16} = 1 has a vertical transverse axis, foci (0,±5)(0, \pm 5). And asymptotes are not part of the curve — ever closer, never met.
