Algebra 2Algebra 2 · 6. 6. Exponentials & Logarithms

y=A0at(A0:처음 양)y = A_0 \, a^t \qquad (A_0: \text{처음 양})

증가율이 rr이면 배율은 a=1+ra = 1 + r: 연 2%2\% 성장은 a=1.02a = 1.02, 연 20%20\% 감가는 a=0.8a = 0.8이다.

y=A0(12)t/Ty = A_0 \left(\frac12\right)^{t/T}

t=Tt = T에서 지수가 11(절반), t=2Tt = 2T에서 22(4분의 1). 가로 신축 tt/Tt \mapsto t/T가 "매 TT년마다"를 문법으로 옮긴다. 배가 시간 DD의 성장도 같은 꼴 y=A02t/Dy = A_0 \cdot 2^{t/D}이다.

t y O 8 16 24 32 50 100 100 50 25 12.5

t=log2log1.050.30100.021214.2.t = \frac{\log 2}{\log 1.05} \approx \frac{0.3010}{0.0212} \approx 14.2\text{년}.

nn 11 22 44 1212 365365
(1+1n)n\left(1+\frac1n\right)^n 22 2.252.25 2.44142.4414 2.61302.6130 2.71462.7146

e=2.71828e = 2.71828\ldots

M=logAA0    규모 1 차이=진폭 10배.M = \log \frac{A}{A_0} \;\Longrightarrow\; \text{규모 1 차이} = \text{진폭 10배}.

Goals
  • Build exponential models in standard form y=A0aty = A_0 \, a^t, translating growth/decay rates into factors.
  • Understand half-life and doubling time as horizontal scaling, and answer "when?" with logarithms.
  • Meet the constant ee in the limit of compound interest, and read logarithmic scales (Richter, pH).

Standard form: initial amount × factor per unit

A quantity changing by the same factor aa each unit of time follows

y=A0at(A0:the initial amount)y = A_0 \, a^t \qquad (A_0: \text{the initial amount})

— the exponential's identity ("arithmetic input → geometric output") turned directly into a model. A growth rate rr means factor a=1+ra = 1 + r: 2%2\% annual growth is a=1.02a = 1.02; 20%20\% annual depreciation is a=0.8a = 0.8. Distinguishing rate from factor is the first gate of modeling.

Half-life and doubling time: rescaling the clock

Radioactive matter halves "every half-life TT." The natural unit is TT years rather than one, so rescale the clock:

y=A0(12)t/Ty = A_0 \left(\frac12\right)^{t/T}

— at t=Tt = T the exponent is 11 (half); at t=2Tt = 2T it is 22 (a quarter). The horizontal scaling tt/Tt \mapsto t/T grammaticalizes "every TT years." Growth with doubling time DD has the same shape, y=A02t/Dy = A_0 \cdot 2^{t/D}.

t y O 8 16 24 32 50 100 100 50 25 12.5
Half-life 8 days: halving every 8 days — 100 → 50 → 25 → 12.5.

"When?" is the logarithm's question

The model answers "how much?" (given tt, produce yy); the logarithm answers "when?" (given yy, recover tt).

Example

Time for money to double at 5%5\% annual compound interest: from 1.05t=21.05^t = 2,

t=log2log1.050.30100.021214.2 years.t = \frac{\log 2}{\log 1.05} \approx \frac{0.3010}{0.0212} \approx 14.2 \text{ years}.

(Common log on both sides — the power law brings tt down from the exponent.)

The equations with un-matchable bases now all fall — at=kt=logklogaa^t = k \Rightarrow t = \dfrac{\log k}{\log a}: the practical reason logarithms live in this unit.

The limit of compounding: first contact with ee

Deposit 11 unit at 100%100\% annual interest, and collect the interest more and more often. Split into nn payments of 1n\frac1n each, and a year yields (1+1n)n\left(1 + \frac1n\right)^n:

nn 11 22 44 1212 365365
(1+1n)n\left(1+\frac1n\right)^n 22 2.252.25 2.44142.4414 2.61302.6130 2.71462.7146

Compounding infinitely often does not explode — the values approach a number

e=2.71828e = 2.71828\ldots

This natural constant ee is the base of "continuous compounding," irrational like π\pi, and in calculus becomes the true protagonist of exponential functions. For now, accept what the table shows — increasing, yet never past 33 (the proof belongs to calculus).

Logarithmic scales: folding a large world in

Earthquake amplitudes vary by factors of millions — no plain axis survives that. The Richter magnitude takes the log of the amplitude:

M=logAA0    1 unit of magnitude=10-fold amplitude.M = \log \frac{A}{A_0} \;\Longrightarrow\; \text{1 unit of magnitude} = \text{10-fold amplitude}.

Chemistry's pH=log[H+]\text{pH} = -\log[\mathrm{H^+}] is the same design — each unit of pH is a 1010-fold concentration. A log scale measures a multiplicative world with an additive ruler — cousin to the digit-count formula logN+1\lfloor \log N \rfloor + 1.

Watch out

The factor for "20%20\% decrease" is 0.80.8, not 0.2-0.2 — translate rates into numbers you multiply, not add. And 10%10\% growth over 22 years is not 5%5\% per year: 1.052=1.10251.101.05^2 = 1.1025 \ne 1.10 — in exponential country, rates do not divide evenly.
