Algebra 2Algebra 2 · 10. 10. Introduction to Conic Sections

초점을 F(c,0)F(c, 0), F(c,0)F'(-c, 0), 거리 합을 2a2a(a>ca > c)로 놓자. 조건은

(x+c)2+y2+(xc)2+y2=2a.\sqrt{(x + c)^2 + y^2} + \sqrt{(x - c)^2 + y^2} = 2a.

a(xc)2+y2=a2cx,a\sqrt{(x - c)^2 + y^2} = a^2 - cx,

(a2c2)x2+a2y2=a2(a2c2).(a^2 - c^2)x^2 + a^2 y^2 = a^2(a^2 - c^2).

x2a2+y2b2=1(b2=a2c2)\boxed{\frac{x^2}{a^2} + \frac{y^2}{b^2} = 1} \qquad (b^2 = a^2 - c^2)

xx절편 ±a\pm a(장축의 끝), yy절편 ±b\pm b(단축의 끝).

b2=a2c2b^2 = a^2 - c^2, 곧 a2=b2+c2a^2 = b^2 + c^2 — 피타고라스 꼴이다. 실제로 직각삼각형이 그림 속에 있다: 단축의 끝 (0,b)(0, b)에서 초점까지의 거리는

b2+c2=a2=a\sqrt{b^2 + c^2} = \sqrt{a^2} = a

e=ca(0e<1)e = \frac ca \qquad (0 \le e < 1)

e=0e = 0이면 두 초점이 겹쳐(c=0c = 0) — 원은 타원의 특수형이다. ee11에 다가갈수록 길쭉해진다. 행성 궤도가 타원이고(케플러 제1법칙 — 태양이 한 초점에) 지구 궤도의 e0.017e \approx 0.017이라는 것은, 지구의 길이 거의 원을 돈다는 뜻이다.

타원 = 눌린 원

x2+y2=a2x^2 + y^2 = a^2의 모든 점을 세로로만 ba\dfrac ba배 누르면(ybayy \mapsto \frac ba y) 타원이 된다 — 눌린 점 (x,Y)(x, Y)Y=bayY = \frac ba y에서 y=abYy = \frac ab Y이고, 원의 방정식에 넣으면

x2+a2b2Y2=a2    x2a2+Y2b2=1.  x^2 + \frac{a^2}{b^2}Y^2 = a^2 \;\Longrightarrow\; \frac{x^2}{a^2} + \frac{Y^2}{b^2} = 1. \; ✓

Goals
  • Define the ellipse as the locus with a constant sum of distances to two foci, deriving x2a2+y2b2=1\dfrac{x^2}{a^2} + \dfrac{y^2}{b^2} = 1.
  • Work with major/minor axes, foci, a2=b2+c2a^2 = b^2 + c^2, and eccentricity.
  • Use the ellipse-as-squashed-circle viewpoint on locus and area problems.

Two pins and a loop of string

Plant two pins, loop a slack string around them, and sweep a pencil held taut — an ellipse appears. The string's length never changes, so:

The locus of points whose distances to two points FF, FF' (the foci) have a constant sum is an ellipse.

The parabola said "equidistant"; the ellipse says "constant sum" — the locus grammar changed by one word.

r₁ + r₂ = 2a F F′ P r₁ r₂
The string length r₁ + r₂ is constant — 2a from every point.

Definition to equation: square twice

Put the foci at F(c,0)F(c, 0), F(c,0)F'(-c, 0) with distance sum 2a2a (where a>ca > c). The condition reads

(x+c)2+y2+(xc)2+y2=2a.\sqrt{(x + c)^2 + y^2} + \sqrt{(x - c)^2 + y^2} = 2a.

Two radicals — as the radical equations lesson taught, isolate and square, twice. The first squaring and cleanup leave

a(xc)2+y2=a2cx;a\sqrt{(x - c)^2 + y^2} = a^2 - cx;

squaring again and collecting:

(a2c2)x2+a2y2=a2(a2c2).(a^2 - c^2)x^2 + a^2 y^2 = a^2(a^2 - c^2).

The quantity a2c2a^2 - c^2 repeats — name this positive number b2b^2 and divide by a2b2a^2 b^2:

x2a2+y2b2=1(b2=a2c2)\boxed{\frac{x^2}{a^2} + \frac{y^2}{b^2} = 1} \qquad (b^2 = a^2 - c^2)

The xx-intercepts ±a\pm a end the major axis; the yy-intercepts ±b\pm b end the minor axis. (Exercise p04 finishes the equivalence bookkeeping for the two squarings.)

The right triangle of aa, bb, cc

b2=a2c2b^2 = a^2 - c^2, i.e. a2=b2+c2a^2 = b^2 + c^2 — Pythagorean in shape, and an actual right triangle sits in the picture: from the minor axis endpoint (0,b)(0, b), the distance to a focus is

b2+c2=a2=a\sqrt{b^2 + c^2} = \sqrt{a^2} = a

aa to each focus, sum 2a2a ✓. Half the string, aa, as hypotenuse, with legs bb and cc: one triangle binds the ellipse's three constants.

Eccentricity: how elongated

e=ca(0e<1)e = \frac ca \qquad (0 \le e < 1)

At e=0e = 0 the foci coincide (c=0c = 0): a circle — the circle is an ellipse's special case. As ee nears 11, the curve stretches long. Planetary orbits are ellipses (Kepler's first law — the Sun at one focus), and Earth's e0.017e \approx 0.017 says our planet runs a nearly perfect circle.

The ellipse as a squashed circle

Press every point of the circle x2+y2=a2x^2 + y^2 = a^2 vertically by the factor ba\dfrac ba (ybayy \mapsto \frac ba y) and an ellipse results — for a pressed point (x,Y)(x, Y) with Y=bayY = \frac ba y, substitute y=abYy = \frac ab Y into the circle:

x2+a2b2Y2=a2    x2a2+Y2b2=1.  x^2 + \frac{a^2}{b^2}Y^2 = a^2 \;\Longrightarrow\; \frac{x^2}{a^2} + \frac{Y^2}{b^2} = 1. \; ✓

A rerun of the stretch transformations — and this single viewpoint reduces elliptical locus and area problems to circle problems (exercises p11–p13).

Watch out

The foci always lie on the longer axis — in x29+y225=1\dfrac{x^2}{9} + \dfrac{y^2}{25} = 1 the y2y^2 denominator wins, so the major axis is vertical and the foci are (0,±c)(0, \pm c). Always c2=c^2 = (larger denominator) - (smaller). And the definition's constant 2a2a equals the major axis length — asked for the string, answer 2a2a, not aa.
