Algebra 2Algebra 2 · 8. 8. Introduction to Trigonometric Functions

  • sinx=k\sin x = k, cosx=k\cos x = k, tanx=k\tan x = k를 단위원으로 풀고, 일반해를 쓴다.

sinx=12\sin x = \dfrac12 — 단위원에서 높이가 12\dfrac12인 점을 찾는 문제다. 수평선 y=12y = \dfrac12가 원과 두 번 만난다: π6\dfrac\pi6과, 그 yy축 거울상 ππ6=5π6\pi - \dfrac\pi6 = \dfrac{5\pi}6.

y = 1/2 π/6 5π/6

x=π6+2kπ또는x=5π6+2kπ(kZ)x = \frac\pi6 + 2k\pi \quad \text{또는} \quad x = \frac{5\pi}6 + 2k\pi \qquad (k \in \mathbb Z)

sinx=k\sin x = k θ\thetaπθ\pi - \theta (yy축 거울) θ+2kπ\theta + 2k\pi, (πθ)+2kπ(\pi - \theta) + 2k\pi
cosx=k\cos x = k θ\thetaθ-\theta (xx축 거울) ±θ+2kπ\pm\theta + 2k\pi
tanx=k\tan x = k θ\thetaθ+π\theta + \pi (같은 직선) θ+kπ\theta + k\pi

u=π3, 2π3, π3+2π, 2π3+2π    x=π6, π3, 7π6, 4π3.u = \frac\pi3,\ \frac{2\pi}3,\ \frac\pi3 + 2\pi,\ \frac{2\pi}3 + 2\pi \;\Longrightarrow\; x = \frac\pi6,\ \frac\pi3,\ \frac{7\pi}6,\ \frac{4\pi}3.

2sin2xsinx1=02\sin^2 x - \sin x - 1 = 0: s=sinxs = \sin x

(2s+1)(s1)=0    s=12, 1(2s + 1)(s - 1) = 0 \;\Longrightarrow\; s = -\frac12,\ 1

(s[1,1]s \in [-1, 1] — 둘 다 유효).

sinx=cosx\sin x = \cos xcosx\cos x로 나눠 tanx=1\tan x = 1로 만들 때는 cosx=0\cos x = 0이 해가 아님을 먼저 확인하라(cosx=0\cos x = 0이면 sinx=±10\sin x = \pm1 \ne 0 — 안전). 나눗셈은 언제나 "0이 아닐 때"라는 각서를 요구한다. 그리고 일반해의 주기: sin\sin·cos\cos2kπ2k\pi, tan\tankπk\pi다.

Goals
  • Solve sinx=k\sin x = k, cosx=k\cos x = k, tanx=k\tan x = k on the unit circle, and write general solutions.
  • Handle transformed-angle equations (sin2x\sin 2x), quadratic types (substitution), and basic inequalities.
  • Adopt the view: periodic equations have infinitely many solutions; the range does the choosing.

The unit circle displays the solutions

sinx=12\sin x = \dfrac12 asks: where on the unit circle is the height 12\dfrac12? The horizontal line y=12y = \dfrac12 meets the circle twice: at π6\dfrac\pi6, and at its yy-axis mirror ππ6=5π6\pi - \dfrac\pi6 = \dfrac{5\pi}6.

y = 1/2 π/6 5π/6
Two points at height 1/2 — the reference angle and its y-axis mirror.

And each full turn (2π2\pi) revisits the same points, so all solutions are

x=π6+2kπorx=5π6+2kπ(kZ)x = \frac\pi6 + 2k\pi \quad \text{or} \quad x = \frac{5\pi}6 + 2k\pi \qquad (k \in \mathbb Z)

— two infinite families: the general solution. When a problem restricts the range (say [0,2π)[0, 2\pi)), pick out what falls inside.

Symmetry dictates each function's solution structure:

equation partners on the circle general solution
sinx=k\sin x = k θ\theta and πθ\pi - \theta (yy-axis mirror) θ+2kπ\theta + 2k\pi, (πθ)+2kπ(\pi - \theta) + 2k\pi
cosx=k\cos x = k θ\theta and θ-\theta (xx-axis mirror) ±θ+2kπ\pm\theta + 2k\pi
tanx=k\tan x = k θ\theta and θ+π\theta + \pi (same line) θ+kπ\theta + k\pi

Only tangent, with period π\pi, finishes in one family. And if k>1|k| > 1, the sine and cosine equations have no solutions — the wave never leaves the band [1,1][-1, 1].

Transformed angles: transform the range too

Example

sin2x=32\sin 2x = \dfrac{\sqrt3}2 on [0,2π)[0, 2\pi): substituting u=2xu = 2x stretches the range to [0,4π)[0, 4\pi)two laps.

u=π3, 2π3, π3+2π, 2π3+2π    x=π6, π3, 7π6, 4π3.u = \frac\pi3,\ \frac{2\pi}3,\ \frac\pi3 + 2\pi,\ \frac{2\pi}3 + 2\pi \;\Longrightarrow\; x = \frac\pi6,\ \frac\pi3,\ \frac{7\pi}6,\ \frac{4\pi}3.

Half the period, twice the solutions — forget to stretch uu's range and half of them vanish.

Quadratic types: substitute, and trade via Pythagoras

When sine and cosine mix in a quadratic, unify into one function via Pythagoras, then substitute.

Example

2sin2xsinx1=02\sin^2 x - \sin x - 1 = 0 on [0,2π)[0, 2\pi): with s=sinxs = \sin x,

(2s+1)(s1)=0    s=12, 1(2s + 1)(s - 1) = 0 \;\Longrightarrow\; s = -\frac12,\ 1

(both inside s[1,1]s \in [-1, 1] — both valid). Solving each: sinx=1\sin x = 1 gives x=π2x = \dfrac\pi2; sinx=12\sin x = -\dfrac12 gives x=7π6,11π6x = \dfrac{7\pi}6, \dfrac{11\pi}6 — three solutions.

Substitution's escort condition grows again: this time s[1,1]s \in [-1, 1] — discard roots outside the band.

Trig inequalities: answer with arcs

The solutions of sinx12\sin x \ge \dfrac12 form the arc of height 12\ge \frac12 — the upper arc between π6\dfrac\pi6 and 5π6\dfrac{5\pi}6: on [0,2π)[0, 2\pi), π6x5π6\dfrac\pi6 \le x \le \dfrac{5\pi}6. The tide problem's move, now formalized.

Watch out

Before dividing sinx=cosx\sin x = \cos x by cosx\cos x to get tanx=1\tan x = 1, check that cosx=0\cos x = 0 is not itself a solution (there sinx=±10\sin x = \pm1 \ne 0 — safe). Division always demands its "nonzero" affidavit. And general-solution periods: 2kπ2k\pi for sine and cosine, kπk\pi for tangent.
