x y O -4 -2 2 4 -4 -2 2 4 y = 1/x
y = 1/x — 두 축이 점근선인 두 가지 곡선.

y=2x+1x1y = \dfrac{2x + 1}{x - 1}처럼 생긴 함수는 어디가 중심인가. 다항식 나눗셈이 답을 꺼낸다:

2x+1x1=2(x1)+3x1=2+3x1\frac{2x + 1}{x - 1} = \frac{2(x - 1) + 3}{x - 1} = 2 + \frac{3}{x - 1}

y=3xy = \dfrac3x를 오른쪽 11, 위로 22 옮긴 곡선이다. 점근선은 x=1x = 1(분모의 근), y=2y = 2(). U1에서 이동으로 만들어 봤던 그 식이, 이제 나눗셈으로 분해되는 방향까지 완성됐다.

x y O -4 -2 2 4 6 -4 -2 2 4 6 8 (1, 2)

분자 == 분모 y=최고차계수 비y = \dfrac{\text{최고차계수 비}}{}

Goals
  • Establish the graph of y=1xy = \frac1x and the concept of asymptotes.
  • Convert linear-over-linear rational functions to "shift form" by division and read off the asymptotes.
  • Distinguish vertical and horizontal asymptote rules, and holes (cancelled factors).

The parent: y=1xy = \dfrac1x

The family's parent is the reciprocal y=1xy = \dfrac1x — two branches in the first and third quadrants, and one newborn concept.

Grow xx without bound and 1x\dfrac1x approaches 00 without touching — the graph hugs the xx-axis. Send xx toward 00 and the values explode — the graph soars along the yy-axis. A line a graph approaches without limit is an asymptote: for y=1xy = \frac1x, the two axes x=0x = 0 and y=0y = 0.

x y O -4 -2 2 4 -4 -2 2 4 y = 1/x
y = 1/x — two branches with the axes as asymptotes.

Shifts: the asymptotes move house

U1's transformation rules apply verbatim — y=1xh+ky = \dfrac{1}{x - h} + k shifts right hh and up kk, and the asymptotes move along, to x=hx = h and y=ky = k. Their crossing (h,k)(h, k) is the curve's new "center."

Linear over linear: division reveals the shift

Where is the center of y=2x+1x1y = \dfrac{2x + 1}{x - 1}? Polynomial division extracts it:

2x+1x1=2(x1)+3x1=2+3x1\frac{2x + 1}{x - 1} = \frac{2(x - 1) + 3}{x - 1} = 2 + \frac{3}{x - 1}

— the curve y=3xy = \dfrac3x shifted right 11, up 22. Asymptotes: x=1x = 1 (the denominator's root) and y=2y = 2 (the quotient). The formula U1 once built by shifting is now completed in the reverse direction — decomposed by division.

x y O -4 -2 2 4 6 -4 -2 2 4 6 8 (1, 2)
(2x+1)/(x−1) = 2 + 3/(x−1) — the asymptote crossing (1, 2) is the new center.

The asymptote rules

Vertical — roots of the denominator (after reducing). Denominator to 00, numerator not: values explode.

Horizontal — a summary of end behavior. For huge xx, leading terms dominate top and bottom (the polynomial unit's argument), so compare degrees:

degrees horizontal asymptote
top << bottom y=0y = 0
top == bottom y=y = ratio of leading coefficients
top >> bottom none (the graph grows without bound)
Example

3x21x2+2\dfrac{3x^2 - 1}{x^2 + 2}: equal degrees, so y=31=3y = \dfrac31 = 3. Confirm — divide through by x2x^2: 31/x21+2/x2\dfrac{3 - 1/x^2}{1 + 2/x^2}, and as xx grows the 1x2\frac{1}{x^2} terms fade, leaving 31\dfrac31.

Holes: cancellation's footprint

Last lesson's warning, now visible. y=x24x2y = \dfrac{x^2 - 4}{x - 2} reduces to x+2x + 2 yet is undefined at x=2x = 2 — the graph is the line y=x+2y = x + 2 with the single point (2,4)(2, 4) missing: a hole.

The distinction from vertical asymptotes is the point:

  • Denominator root that cancels with the numerator → a hole (no explosion; one point vacated)
  • Root that does not cancel → a vertical asymptote (explosion)

The x=2x = 2 of x+2x2\dfrac{x + 2}{x - 2} is an asymptote; the x=2x = 2 of x24x2\dfrac{x^2 - 4}{x - 2} is a hole — same "denominator root," different fates.

Watch out

Read vertical asymptotes only after reducing — listing every pre-reduction denominator root as an asymptote disguises holes as asymptotes. And while a graph never crosses a vertical asymptote, it may cross a horizontal one at finite xx — a horizontal asymptote is a promise about the ends, not a fence.
