Algebra 2Algebra 2 · 8. 8. Introduction to Trigonometric Functions

θ(라디안)=호의 길이반지름=lr\theta \,(\text{라디안}) = \frac{\text{호의 길이}}{\text{반지름}} = \frac{l}{r}

360°=2πrr=2π  rad,180°=π,90°=π2,60°=π3,45°=π4,30°=π6.360° = \frac{2\pi r}{r} = 2\pi \;\text{rad}, \qquad 180° = \pi, \quad 90° = \frac\pi2, \quad 60° = \frac\pi3, \quad 45° = \frac\pi4, \quad 30° = \frac\pi6.

S=πr2θ2π=12r2θ  (=12rl)S = \pi r^2 \cdot \frac{\theta}{2\pi} = \frac12 r^2 \theta \;\left(= \frac12 r l\right)

P=(cosθ, sinθ),tanθ=sinθcosθP = (\cos\theta,\ \sin\theta), \qquad \tan\theta = \frac{\sin\theta}{\cos\theta}

θ 1 cos θ sin θ P(cos θ, sin θ) 1 −1

θ\theta 00 π6\frac\pi6 π4\frac\pi4 π3\frac\pi3 π2\frac\pi2
cosθ\cos\theta 11 32\frac{\sqrt3}2 22\frac{\sqrt2}2 12\frac12 00
sinθ\sin\theta 00 12\frac12 22\frac{\sqrt2}2 32\frac{\sqrt3}2 11

cos2π3=12,sin2π3=32\cos\frac{2\pi}3 = -\frac12, \qquad \sin\frac{2\pi}3 = \frac{\sqrt3}2

l=rθl = r\thetaS=12r2θS = \frac12 r^2\theta라디안 전용이다 — θ=60\theta = 60(도)을 그대로 넣는 순간 무너진다. 단위원이 아닌 반지름 rr의 원 위 점이라면 좌표는 (rcosθ,rsinθ)(r\cos\theta, r\sin\theta)cos\cos, sin\sin은 좌표를 rr나눈 비율이다. 그리고 tanθ\tan\thetacosθ=0\cos\theta = 0인 각(π2+kπ\frac\pi2 + k\pi)에서 정의되지 않는다.

Goals
  • Define the radian as the arc-to-radius ratio, and prove l=rθl = r\theta and S=12r2θS = \frac12 r^2\theta.
  • Extend the trigonometric ratios to all angles via unit-circle coordinates: (cosθ,sinθ)(\cos\theta, \sin\theta).
  • Read special-angle values and quadrant signs from coordinates.

Radians: measuring angles by length

Degrees split the circle into 360360 by human convention (a Babylonian inheritance). Mathematics prefers a more natural ruler — the angle whose arc equals the radius is 11 radian:

θ(radians)=arc lengthradius=lr\theta \,(\text{radians}) = \frac{\text{arc length}}{\text{radius}} = \frac{l}{r}

A ratio — so it ignores the circle's size. A full turn's arc is the circumference 2πr2\pi r, hence

360°=2πrr=2π  rad,180°=π,90°=π2,60°=π3,45°=π4,30°=π6.360° = \frac{2\pi r}{r} = 2\pi \;\text{rad}, \qquad 180° = \pi, \quad 90° = \frac\pi2, \quad 60° = \frac\pi3, \quad 45° = \frac\pi4, \quad 30° = \frac\pi6.

The radian's reward is shorter formulas. Inverting the definition: arc length l=rθl = r\theta. Sector area follows by proportion — a central angle θ\theta claims the fraction θ2π\frac{\theta}{2\pi} of the whole:

S=πr2θ2π=12r2θ  (=12rl)S = \pi r^2 \cdot \frac{\theta}{2\pi} = \frac12 r^2 \theta \;\left(= \frac12 r l\right)

— in degrees this would carry baggage like πr2θ360\frac{\pi r^2 \theta}{360}. Measure angles as length ratios, and π\pi vanishes from the formulas.

The unit circle: trigonometry's new home

In geometry the trig ratios lived inside right triangles — hence only acute angles (0°90°90°). Time to move. On the unit circle (center origin, radius 11), rotate a radius counterclockwise from the positive xx-axis by θ\theta; name the coordinates of where it meets the circle:

P=(cosθ, sinθ),tanθ=sinθcosθP = (\cos\theta,\ \sin\theta), \qquad \tan\theta = \frac{\sin\theta}{\cos\theta}

θ 1 cos θ sin θ P(cos θ, sin θ) 1 −1
A point on the unit circle — x-coordinate cos θ, y-coordinate sin θ, and tan θ is the ray's slope.

For acute angles this agrees with the old definition: a right triangle with hypotenuse 11 has base cosθ\cos\theta and height sinθ\sin\theta (the old divide-by-hypotenuse with denominator 11). But the new definition accepts every angle — past 90°90°, negative (clockwise), beyond 2π2\pi (multiple turns): a coordinate always exists. Every 2π2\pi returns to the same point, so the values repeat every 2π2\pi — a preview of next lesson's graphs.

And tanθ\tan\theta carries one more geometric identity: yx\dfrac{y}{x}the slope of the ray.

Special angles: two triangles suffice

Geometry's two special right triangles (4545-4545-9090 and 3030-6060-9090) fill the coordinate table:

θ\theta 00 π6\frac\pi6 π4\frac\pi4 π3\frac\pi3 π2\frac\pi2
cosθ\cos\theta 11 32\frac{\sqrt3}2 22\frac{\sqrt2}2 12\frac12 00
sinθ\sin\theta 00 12\frac12 22\frac{\sqrt2}2 32\frac{\sqrt3}2 11

For other quadrants, the reference angle (the acute angle to the xx-axis) gives the magnitude and the coordinate signs give the sign: quadrant II has x<0,y>0x < 0, y > 0, so cos<0\cos < 0, sin>0\sin > 0 — for instance

cos2π3=12,sin2π3=32\cos\frac{2\pi}3 = -\frac12, \qquad \sin\frac{2\pi}3 = \frac{\sqrt3}2

(the reference angle of 2π3\frac{2\pi}3 is π3\frac\pi3). A hand that sketches the unit circle outlasts any sign mnemonic.

Watch out

l=rθl = r\theta and S=12r2θS = \frac12 r^2\theta are radian-only — feed in θ=60\theta = 60 (degrees) and they collapse. On a circle of radius rr (not 11), the point is (rcosθ,rsinθ)(r\cos\theta, r\sin\theta) — cosine and sine are the coordinates divided by rr. And tanθ\tan\theta is undefined where cosθ=0\cos\theta = 0 (at π2+kπ\frac\pi2 + k\pi).
