Algebra 2Algebra 2 · 8. 8. Introduction to Trigonometric Functions

sin2θ+cos2θ=1\boxed{\sin^2\theta + \cos^2\theta = 1}

tan2θ+1=1cos2θ\tan^2\theta + 1 = \frac{1}{\cos^2\theta}

π2θ\dfrac\pi2 - \theta y=xy = x 반사 (y,x)(y, x) sincos\sin \leftrightarrow \cos 교환

cosθtanθ=cosθsinθcosθ=sinθ,(1cosθ)(1+cosθ)=1cos2θ=sin2θ.\cos\theta \tan\theta = \cos\theta \cdot \frac{\sin\theta}{\cos\theta} = \sin\theta, \qquad (1 - \cos\theta)(1 + \cos\theta) = 1 - \cos^2\theta = \sin^2\theta.

(sinθ+cosθ)2=sin2θ+cos2θ1+2sinθcosθ(\sin\theta + \cos\theta)^2 = \underbrace{\sin^2\theta + \cos^2\theta}_{1} + 2\sin\theta\cos\theta

sin2θ\sin^2\theta(sinθ)2(\sin\theta)^2이지 sin(θ2)\sin(\theta^2)이 아니다.

Goals
  • Prove the Pythagorean identity sin2θ+cos2θ=1\sin^2\theta + \cos^2\theta = 1 from the unit circle's equation, with its variants.
  • Prove the negative-angle, supplement, complement, and π\pi-shift formulas — all unified as unit-circle symmetries.
  • Practice simplifying and proving identities, and the squaring trick for sinθ±cosθ\sin\theta \pm \cos\theta.

The Pythagorean identity: the circle's equation, translated

The point (cosθ,sinθ)(\cos\theta, \sin\theta) lies on the unit circle — whose equation is x2+y2=1x^2 + y^2 = 1. Substitute, and done:

sin2θ+cos2θ=1\boxed{\sin^2\theta + \cos^2\theta = 1}

Not a new theorem but the circle's equation read in trigonometric language — and that equation was itself the coordinate translation of the Pythagorean theorem, hence the name's lineage. It is also why one coordinate determines the other up to a single sign.

Divide through by cos2θ\cos^2\theta for a variant:

tan2θ+1=1cos2θ\tan^2\theta + 1 = \frac{1}{\cos^2\theta}

(wherever cosθ0\cos\theta \ne 0). The reciprocals 1cos\dfrac1{\cos}, 1sin\dfrac1{\sin}, 1tan\dfrac1{\tan} carry the names secant, cosecant, cotangent (sec\sec, csc\csc, cot\cot) — abbreviations more than new functions.

A dictionary of symmetries: three reflections, not eight formulas

The formulas for πθ\pi - \theta, θ-\theta, π+θ\pi + \theta, π2θ\frac\pi2 - \theta are no list to memorize — each is a symmetry of the unit-circle point, its coordinates supplied by geometry's reflection and rotation formulas:

θ π − θ π + θ −θ
Three mirror images of one point — each symmetry mints a set of formulas.
angle on the circle coordinates formulas
θ-\theta xx-axis reflection (x,y)(x, -y) cos\cos kept, sin\sin negated
πθ\pi - \theta yy-axis reflection (x,y)(-x, y) sin\sin kept, cos\cos negated
π+θ\pi + \theta point reflection (x,y)(-x, -y) both negated, tan\tan kept
π2θ\dfrac\pi2 - \theta y=xy = x reflection (y,x)(y, x) sincos\sin \leftrightarrow \cos swapped

The last row is the cofunction identity sin(π2θ)=cosθ\sin\left(\frac\pi2 - \theta\right) = \cos\theta — that reflecting across y=xy = x swaps coordinates was the inverse-functions lesson's fact, and the "co" in cosine names exactly this complementary-angle bond.

Working identities: unify first

Two staples for simplifying and proving — convert everything to sin\sin and cos\cos, and trade via Pythagoras (sin21cos2\sin^2 \leftrightarrow 1 - \cos^2).

Example

cosθtanθ=cosθsinθcosθ=sinθ,(1cosθ)(1+cosθ)=1cos2θ=sin2θ.\cos\theta \tan\theta = \cos\theta \cdot \frac{\sin\theta}{\cos\theta} = \sin\theta, \qquad (1 - \cos\theta)(1 + \cos\theta) = 1 - \cos^2\theta = \sin^2\theta.

The second is the difference-of-squares formula in trigonometric dress — algebra's muscles work unchanged here.

The squaring trick: bridging sin+cos\sin + \cos and sincos\sin\cos

One squaring connects sinθ+cosθ\sin\theta + \cos\theta with sinθcosθ\sin\theta\cos\theta:

(sinθ+cosθ)2=sin2θ+cos2θ1+2sinθcosθ(\sin\theta + \cos\theta)^2 = \underbrace{\sin^2\theta + \cos^2\theta}_{1} + 2\sin\theta\cos\theta

— know the sum, get the product; know the product, get the sum. The same grammar as the x+1xx + \frac1x trick from the multiplication formulas, drilled in the exercises.

Watch out

sin2θ\sin^2\theta means (sinθ)2(\sin\theta)^2, never sin(θ2)\sin(\theta^2). When proving an identity, start from one side and transform toward the other — manipulating both sides at once slides into assuming what was to be proved. And 1+tan2θ=1cos2θ1 + \tan^2\theta = \frac1{\cos^2\theta} is a conditional identity, alive only where cosθ0\cos\theta \ne 0.
