Algebra 1Algebra 1 · 8. 8. Exponential Functions & Sequences

  • 지수함수 y=abxy = a \cdot b^x의 구조(초기값 aa, 성장 인자 bb)를 읽는다.

y=abxy = a \cdot b^x (a0a \neq 0, b>0b > 0, b1b \neq 1) 꼴의 함수. x=0x = 0을 넣으면 y=ay = a이므로 aa초기값(yy절편)이고, bb는 한 칸마다 곱해지는 성장 인자다.

f(x+1)f(x)=abx+1abx=b\frac{f(x+1)}{f(x)} = \frac{a \cdot b^{x+1}}{a \cdot b^x} = b

x y O -1 1 2 3 4 4 8 12 16 y = 2ˣ y = x + 1 (4, 16)
y = 2의 x제곱과 y = x + 1의 경주 — x = 1까지는 동행하지만 그 뒤로 곡선이 폭발적으로 달아난다

x y O -4 -3 -2 -1 1 2 3 4 2 4 6 8 y = 2ˣ y = (1/2)ˣ (0, 1)
y = 2의 x제곱(성장)과 y = 이분의 일의 x제곱(감쇠)은 y축에 대해 서로 거울상이다

2x=322^x = 32의 해는? 32=2532 = 2^5밑을 맞추면 2x=252^x = 2^5, 따라서 x=5x = 5다. 이 비교가 정당한 이유: 지수함수는 계속 증가(또는 계속 감소)하므로 같은 값을 두 번 갖지 않는다2x=252^x = 2^5가 되는 xx55 하나뿐이다.

검산: t=3t=3이면 10002000400080001000 \to 2000 \to 4000 \to 8000 — 세 번 두 배 ✓.

2x=52^x = 5처럼 밑이 안 맞춰지는 방정식은 어떻게 하는가 — 22<5<232^2 < 5 < 2^3이니 해는 2233 사이 어딘가다. 이 "어딘가"에 정확한 이름을 붙이는 도구(로그)는 Algebra 2에서 만난다. 지금은 어림과 밑 맞추기까지가 사정거리다.

Goals
  • Read the structure of an exponential function y=abxy = a \cdot b^x: initial value aa, growth factor bb.
  • Distinguish linear change ("add the same amount") from exponential change ("multiply by the same factor"), with proof.
  • Solve simple exponential equations by matching bases, and classify growth versus decay.

The number that doubles every step

One bacterium splits in two every hour. Tabulating the count against time xx:

xx 00 11 22 33 44 55
yy 11 22 44 88 1616 3232

The grain of this table differs from a linear one — the differences between neighbors stretch out (1,2,4,8,161, 2, 4, 8, 16), while the ratios hold steady at 22. The formula behind it is y=2xy = 2^x: the variable sits in the exponent.

DefinitionExponential function

A function of the form y=abxy = a \cdot b^x with a0a \neq 0, b>0b > 0, b1b \neq 1. Setting x=0x = 0 gives y=ay = a, so aa is the initial value (the yy-intercept), and bb is the growth factor applied at each step.

y=x2y = x^2 (variable in the base) and y=2xy = 2^x (variable in the exponent) differ by far more than typography — they are functions from different worlds, and the second eventually outruns any polynomial.

Additive growth, multiplicative growth

The linear-functions unit proved that for f(x)=mx+kf(x) = mx + k, f(x+1)f(x)=mf(x+1) - f(x) = m: each step adds the same amount. The exponential counterpart comes from division, not subtraction. For f(x)=abxf(x) = a \cdot b^x,

f(x+1)f(x)=abx+1abx=b\frac{f(x+1)}{f(x)} = \frac{a \cdot b^{x+1}}{a \cdot b^x} = b

— the exponent laws, verbatim. Each step multiplies by the same factor. This yields the table test: constant neighbor differences mean linear; constant neighbor ratios mean exponential.

Multiplicative growth is more powerful than intuition expects. If a sheet of paper 0.10.1 mm thick could be folded in half 4242 times, its thickness would be 0.1×2420.1 \times 2^{42} mm 4.4×108\approx 4.4 \times 10^{8} m — beyond the distance from Earth to the Moon (about 3.8×1083.8 \times 10^8 m). A few dozen doublings produce numbers you can barely write without scientific notation.

x y O -1 1 2 3 4 4 8 12 16 y = 2ˣ y = x + 1 (4, 16)
The race between y = 2 to the x and y = x + 1: together until x = 1, after which the curve explodes away

The graph is the race's verdict. y=x+1y = x+1 and y=2xy = 2^x meet at x=0x = 0 and x=1x = 1, then the curve leaves the line behind — by x=4x = 4 it is 1616 against 55.

The shape of the graph

What happens to the left of y=2xy = 2^x? Thanks to negative exponents being defined in advance (21=122^{-1} = \frac12, 22=142^{-2} = \frac14, …), the graph continues naturally leftward — halving toward 00, approaching but never touching it (2x2^x is always positive). The line a graph approaches without end (here the xx-axis) is called an asymptote.

A base below 11 flips the story:

x y O -4 -3 -2 -1 1 2 3 4 2 4 6 8 y = 2ˣ y = (1/2)ˣ (0, 1)
y = 2 to the x (growth) and y = one-half to the x (decay) are mirror images across the y-axis

b>1:growth,0<b<1:decay.b > 1: \textbf{growth}, \qquad 0 < b < 1: \textbf{decay}.

Since (12)x=2x\left(\frac12\right)^x = 2^{-x}, the two graphs are mirror images across the yy-axis. Either way, the graph passes through (0,a)(0, a) with the xx-axis as asymptote.

Match the bases and the exponents talk

What solves 2x=322^x = 32? Match the bases: 32=2532 = 2^5, so 2x=252^x = 2^5 and x=5x = 5. Why the comparison is legitimate: an exponential function only increases (or only decreases), so it never takes the same value twice — exactly one xx makes 2x=252^x = 2^5.

Example — A bacterial culture

A culture of 10001000 bacteria doubles every hour. ① Write the count after tt hours, ② find the count after 55 hours, ③ find when the count reaches 80008000.

Solution. ① Initial value 10001000, growth factor 22: N=10002tN = 1000 \cdot 2^t. ② At t=5t = 5: N=100032=32000N = 1000 \cdot 32 = 32000. ③ From 10002t=80001000 \cdot 2^t = 8000, we get 2t=8=232^t = 8 = 2^3; with matching bases, t=3t = 3 hours.

Check: from t=0t=0 to t=3t=3, 10002000400080001000 \to 2000 \to 4000 \to 8000 — three doublings ✓.

And when the bases won't match, as in 2x=52^x = 5? Since 22<5<232^2 < 5 < 2^3, the solution lives somewhere between 22 and 33. The tool that gives that "somewhere" an exact name — the logarithm — arrives in Algebra 2. For now, estimation and base-matching mark the edge of the map.

The problems tab runs from classification and evaluation basics through reading formulas off tables, a doubling-wage proposal, pinning a function through two points, and the contest comparison of 21002^{100} versus 103010^{30} — thirteen problems.
