The Quadratic Formula & the Discriminant

Algebra 1Algebra 1 · 6. 6. Quadratics

x2+bax+ca=0x^2 + \frac{b}{a}x + \frac{c}{a} = 0

x2+bax=cax^2 + \frac{b}{a}x = -\frac{c}{a}

xx 계수의 절반의 제곱, (b2a)2\left(\dfrac{b}{2a}\right)^2을 양변에 더한다.

(x+b2a)2=b24a2ca=b24ac4a2\left(x + \frac{b}{2a}\right)^2 = \frac{b^2}{4a^2} - \frac{c}{a} = \frac{b^2 - 4ac}{4a^2}

x+b2a=±b24ac2a      x=b±b24ac2a  x + \frac{b}{2a} = \pm\frac{\sqrt{b^2-4ac}}{2a} \implies \boxed{\;x = \frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2-4ac}}{2a}\;}

x=3±3241(2)21=3±172.x = \frac{-3 \pm \sqrt{3^2 - 4 \cdot 1 \cdot (-2)}}{2 \cdot 1} = \frac{-3 \pm \sqrt{17}}{2}.

검산(x=3+172x = \frac{-3+\sqrt{17}}{2}): x2=9617+174=133172x^2 = \frac{9 - 6\sqrt{17} + 17}{4} = \frac{13 - 3\sqrt{17}}{2}이고 3x=9+31723x = \frac{-9 + 3\sqrt{17}}{2}이므로

x2+3x2=133179+31722=422=0  x^2 + 3x - 2 = \frac{13 - 3\sqrt{17} - 9 + 3\sqrt{17}}{2} - 2 = \frac{4}{2} - 2 = 0 \;✓

x=5±74=24  또는  124=12  또는  3  x = \frac{-5 \pm 7}{4} = \frac{2}{4} \;\text{또는}\; \frac{-12}{4} = \frac12 \;\text{또는}\; -3 \;✓

D=0D = 0 00 하나 11개 (중근 x=b2ax = -\frac{b}{2a})

p+q=(b+D)+(bD)2a=2b2a=bap + q = \frac{(-b + \sqrt D) + (-b - \sqrt D)}{2a} = \frac{-2b}{2a} = -\frac{b}{a}

pq=(b+D)(bD)4a2=b2D4a2=b2(b24ac)4a2=4ac4a2=capq = \frac{(-b + \sqrt D)(-b - \sqrt D)}{4a^2} = \frac{b^2 - D}{4a^2} = \frac{b^2 - (b^2 - 4ac)}{4a^2} = \frac{4ac}{4a^2} = \frac{c}{a}

  p+q=ba,pq=ca  \boxed{\;p + q = -\frac{b}{a}, \qquad pq = \frac{c}{a}\;}

x2=kx^2 = k, (xh)2=k(x-h)^2 = k 제곱근으로 바로

Goals
  • Derive the quadratic formula by running the completing-the-square procedure on ax2+bx+cax^2+bx+c itself.
  • Use the discriminant b24acb^2-4ac to count solutions before computing anything.
  • Read the sum and product of the roots straight off the coefficients, without solving.

If it's the same procedure every time, do it once

Last lesson's four steps — divide, move the constant, add (b2)2\left(\frac b2\right)^2, peel the square — worked on every quadratic equation. But rebuilding the same road for every new equation is wasted labor. Mathematics has a standard response to that situation: run the procedure once with letters instead of numbers, and keep the result as a formula.

The derivation: four steps, loaded with letters

Start from ax2+bx+c=0ax^2 + bx + c = 0 with a0a \neq 0.

① Divide by aa.

x2+bax+ca=0x^2 + \frac{b}{a}x + \frac{c}{a} = 0

② Move the constant across.

x2+bax=cax^2 + \frac{b}{a}x = -\frac{c}{a}

③ Add the square of half the xx-coefficient, (b2a)2\left(\dfrac{b}{2a}\right)^2, to both sides. The left side folds into a perfect square:

(x+b2a)2=b24a2ca=b24ac4a2\left(x + \frac{b}{2a}\right)^2 = \frac{b^2}{4a^2} - \frac{c}{a} = \frac{b^2 - 4ac}{4a^2}

(the right side was combined over the common denominator 4a24a^2).

④ Peel the square — with ±\pm.

x+b2a=±b24ac2a      x=b±b24ac2a  x + \frac{b}{2a} = \pm\frac{\sqrt{b^2-4ac}}{2a} \implies \boxed{\;x = \frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2-4ac}}{2a}\;}

The quadratic formula. Feed in the coefficients aa, bb, cc and out come the solutions of any quadratic — foldable or not. And since the derivation is the completing-the-square procedure, forgetting the formula is never fatal: the four steps rebuild it on demand.

Note

Step ④ wrote 4a2=2a\sqrt{4a^2} = 2a, which should bother you slightly — if aa is negative, 4a2=2a\sqrt{4a^2} = -2a. It's fine anyway: the ±\pm out front sweeps both signs, so writing 2a2a or 2a-2a produces the same set of solutions.

Example 1 — The formula on an unfoldable equation

Solve x2+3x2=0x^2 + 3x - 2 = 0.

Solution. Substitute a=1a=1, b=3b=3, c=2c=-2:

x=3±3241(2)21=3±172.x = \frac{-3 \pm \sqrt{3^2 - 4 \cdot 1 \cdot (-2)}}{2 \cdot 1} = \frac{-3 \pm \sqrt{17}}{2}.

Check (at x=3+172x = \frac{-3+\sqrt{17}}{2}): x2=9617+174=133172x^2 = \frac{9 - 6\sqrt{17} + 17}{4} = \frac{13 - 3\sqrt{17}}{2} and 3x=9+31723x = \frac{-9 + 3\sqrt{17}}{2}, so

x2+3x2=133179+31722=422=0  x^2 + 3x - 2 = \frac{13 - 3\sqrt{17} - 9 + 3\sqrt{17}}{2} - 2 = \frac{4}{2} - 2 = 0 \;✓

On foldable equations it agrees, of course. Run it on 2x2+5x3=02x^2 + 5x - 3 = 0 from the factoring lesson (solutions 12\frac12 and 3-3): 25+24=49=7\sqrt{25+24} = \sqrt{49} = 7, so

x=5±74=24   or   124=12   or   3  x = \frac{-5 \pm 7}{4} = \frac{2}{4} \;\text{ or }\; \frac{-12}{4} = \frac12 \;\text{ or }\; -3 \;✓

— the two methods check each other. And notice something: on foldable equations the number under the root came out a perfect square (4949), letting the root peel away. That number under the root is the next star of the show.

The discriminant: counting before solving

DefinitionDiscriminant

For ax2+bx+c=0ax^2+bx+c=0, the number D=b24acD = b^2 - 4ac is called the discriminant — precisely the quantity that sits under the root in the quadratic formula.

Since the solutions are b±D2a\dfrac{-b \pm \sqrt{D}}{2a}, the sign of DD settles how many there are:

Sign of DD D\sqrt{D} Real solutions
D>0D > 0 two values ±D\pm\sqrt D 22
D=0D = 0 just 00 11 (the repeated root x=b2ax = -\frac{b}{2a})
D<0D < 0 not a real number 00

This is the 2,1,02, 1, 0 split you saw for x2=kx^2 = k, now covering every quadratic — because completing the square turns any quadratic into (x+b2a)2=D4a2\left(x + \frac{b}{2a}\right)^2 = \frac{D}{4a^2}, a "square equals a number" equation.

Example 2 — Judging without solving

How many real solutions does 2x23x+5=02x^2 - 3x + 5 = 0 have?

Solution. D=(3)2425=940=31<0D = (-3)^2 - 4 \cdot 2 \cdot 5 = 9 - 40 = -31 < 0none. One line, no need to run the whole formula.

Sum and product of roots, straight from the coefficients

Call the formula's two solutions p=b+D2ap = \dfrac{-b + \sqrt D}{2a} and q=bD2aq = \dfrac{-b - \sqrt D}{2a}, then add them and multiply them.

The sum. The roots cancel:

p+q=(b+D)+(bD)2a=2b2a=bap + q = \frac{(-b + \sqrt D) + (-b - \sqrt D)}{2a} = \frac{-2b}{2a} = -\frac{b}{a}

The product. Sum-times-difference makes its entrance:

pq=(b+D)(bD)4a2=b2D4a2=b2(b24ac)4a2=4ac4a2=capq = \frac{(-b + \sqrt D)(-b - \sqrt D)}{4a^2} = \frac{b^2 - D}{4a^2} = \frac{b^2 - (b^2 - 4ac)}{4a^2} = \frac{4ac}{4a^2} = \frac{c}{a}

  p+q=ba,pq=ca  \boxed{\;p + q = -\frac{b}{a}, \qquad pq = \frac{c}{a}\;}

Even when the roots are irrational, their sum and product read straight off the coefficients. The solutions of x26x+2=0x^2 - 6x + 2 = 0 are 3±73 \pm \sqrt 7, and without computing anything: sum =6= 6, product =2= 2. Indeed (3+7)+(37)=6(3+\sqrt7) + (3-\sqrt7) = 6 ✓ and (3+7)(37)=97=2(3+\sqrt7)(3-\sqrt7) = 9 - 7 = 2 ✓ (that product is sum-times-difference yet again).

Which method, when

Three tools now. The choice is simple:

What it looks like First move
x2=kx^2 = k or (xh)2=k(x-h)^2 = k Square roots, immediately
Foldable (an integer pair suggests itself) Factoring — fastest, fewest slips
Won't fold, or can't tell The formula — universal, at the cost of arithmetic

The formula handles everything, but using it on x25x+6=0x^2 - 5x + 6 = 0 is a losing trade — (x2)(x3)(x-2)(x-3) is three times faster. Ten seconds spent checking whether it folds buys minutes on a test.

The problems tab covers formula basics, discriminant judgments, conditions for repeated roots and for no solutions, sum-and-product tricks, and a contest question about when both roots can be positive integers — thirteen problems.
