[ADE]=(13)2×54=6,[\triangle ADE] = \left(\frac13\right)^2 \times 54 = 6,

r=2Sp.r = \frac{2S}{p}.

S=12ar+12br+12cr=12r(a+b+c)=12rp    r=2Sp.S = \frac12 ar + \frac12 br + \frac12 cr = \frac12 r(a + b + c) = \frac12 rp \;\Longrightarrow\; r = \frac{2S}{p}. \qquad \blacksquare

r r r A B C

33=3\dfrac{3}{\sqrt3} = \sqrt3 ✓.

Goals
  • Organize the four weapons of area problems: subtract, relocate, ratio, and measure-twice.
  • Practice equal-area relocation of curved pieces and symmetry arguments.
  • Complete the length-fishing technique with the incircle radius formula.

The four weapons

The real problems are the figures no formula fits directly. Nearly all of them open to one of four moves.

① Subtract. Enclose in a known figure and remove known pieces — the lattice triangle's box, the square minus its circle.

② Relocate. Cut a congruent piece and paste it elsewhere (the two rules of area are the permit). Shearing — sliding a vertex along a parallel — belongs here too.

③ Ratio. Equal heights: base ratio == area ratio. Similarity: k2k^2. Skip the values; travel by ratio.

④ Measure twice. Compute one area two ways and set them equal — area stops being the goal and becomes an equation factory.

Example

①, base model — a picture frame with outer edge 10×810 \times 8 and inner hole 6×46 \times 4 has area 8024=5680 - 24 = 56, even if the frame's width varies. However crooked the frame, "outside - inside" holds.

Relocation: curves move too

Curved pieces relocate as freely as straight ones, so long as they are congruent — and many curve problems end with only straight figures left once the moving is done.

The most famous relocation is the symmetry argument. If a figure coincides with itself under a 180°180° rotation (point symmetry), and the cutting boundary also maps to itself under that rotation, then the two pieces are congruent — each exactly half. No matter how wiggly the cut, no computation is needed.

↻ 180°
A circle cut by an S-curve — the 180° rotation swaps the two pieces.
Example

A circle of radius 66 is cut by an S-curve made of two radius-33 semicircles along a vertical diameter. Rotating 180°180° about the center maps the circle to itself and the S-boundary to itself, swapping the two pieces — congruent. Each piece is 36π2=18π\dfrac{36\pi}{2} = 18\pi.

Ratio: travel by proportion

The ratio weapon gets stronger in layers — chain similarity's k2k^2 with base ratios inside one problem.

Example

ABC\triangle ABC has area 5454, and DD, EE with DEBC\overline{DE} \parallel \overline{BC} satisfy AD:DB=1:2AD : DB = 1 : 2. The top triangle is similar with ratio 13\frac13, so

[ADE]=(13)2×54=6,[\triangle ADE] = \left(\frac13\right)^2 \times 54 = 6,

and trapezoid DBCEDBCE is 546=4854 - 6 = 48 — one ratio, one subtraction, done.

Measure twice: fishing lengths out of areas

The moment one area is measured two ways, an equation appears — and it usually surrenders a length. We have used it repeatedly: h=2Sbh = \dfrac{2S}{b}, the right triangle's h=abch = \dfrac{ab}{c}, Viviani's theorem. Here is the technique's definitive edition.

Theorem (incircle radius) — A triangle with area SS and perimeter pp has incircle radius

r=2Sp.r = \frac{2S}{p}.

Proof. Join the incenter II to the three vertices, cutting the triangle into three pieces — each with one side as base and height rr (the incenter's distance to every side):

S=12ar+12br+12cr=12r(a+b+c)=12rp    r=2Sp.S = \frac12 ar + \frac12 br + \frac12 cr = \frac12 r(a + b + c) = \frac12 rp \;\Longrightarrow\; r = \frac{2S}{p}. \qquad \blacksquare

r r r A B C
Three pieces from the incenter — three triangles, every height equal to r.
Example

An equilateral triangle of side 66: S=93S = 9\sqrt3 and p=18p = 18, so r=18318=3r = \dfrac{18\sqrt3}{18} = \sqrt3.

Check by special triangles: the incenter is the center, and the apothem in the half 3030-6060-9090 is 33=3\dfrac{3}{\sqrt3} = \sqrt3 ✓.

Watch out

The four weapons are not a checklist to try in order but parts to combine — one real problem takes subtraction and ratio together, and measure-twice starts where relocation finishes. The question is never "which weapon problem is this," but "which weapon, on which part of this figure."
