GeometryGeometry · 12. 변환12. Transformations

  • 닮음변환(확대·축소)의 정의와 좌표 규칙 (x,y)(kx,ky)(x, y) \to (kx, ky)를 세운다.

OP=kOPOP' = k \cdot OP

(x,y)    (kx,  ky).(x, y) \;\longmapsto\; (kx, \; ky).

O × k

두 점 P(x1,y1)P(x_1, y_1), Q(x2,y2)Q(x_2, y_2)의 상 사이 거리는

PQ=(kx2kx1)2+(ky2ky1)2=k2[(x2x1)2+(y2y1)2]=kPQP'Q' = \sqrt{(kx_2 - kx_1)^2 + (ky_2 - ky_1)^2} = \sqrt{k^2\big[(x_2-x_1)^2 + (y_2-y_1)^2\big]} = k \cdot PQ

상의 기울기는 ky2ky1kx2kx1=y2y1x2x1\dfrac{ky_2 - ky_1}{kx_2 - kx_1} = \dfrac{y_2 - y_1}{x_2 - x_1}kk가 약분된다.

P=C+k(PC).P' = C + k(P - C).

k=1k = 1 항등(그대로)
0<k<10 < k < 1 축소
k=1k = -1 원점 대칭(180°180° 회전과 동일)

중심 C(1,2)C(1, 2), k=12k = -\dfrac12: 점 P(5,4)P(5, 4)의 상은

P=C12(PC)=(1,2)12(4,2)=(1,1).P' = C - \frac12(P - C) = (1, 2) - \frac12(4, 2) = (-1, 1).

Goals
  • Define dilations and establish the coordinate rule (x,y)(kx,ky)(x, y) \to (kx, ky).
  • Prove dilations scale every distance by k|k| while preserving slopes.
  • Sort the spectrum of scale factors (k>1k > 1, 0<k<10 < k < 1, k<0k < 0) and redefine similarity.

The fourth transformation: changing size

The three rigid motions kept size. The fourth transformation changes size while keeping shape. Given a center OO and a factor k>0k > 0, the dilation sends each point PP along the ray OP\overrightarrow{OP} to the point PP' with

OP=kOPOP' = k \cdot OP

— a lamp at the center throwing a shadow kk times as far. With the center at the origin, the coordinate rule is the plainest multiplication there is:

(x,y)    (kx,  ky).(x, y) \;\longmapsto\; (kx, \; ky).

O × k
Along the rays from the center — every point moves k times as far.

What changes, what survives

Distances scale by kk. For images of P(x1,y1)P(x_1, y_1) and Q(x2,y2)Q(x_2, y_2),

PQ=(kx2kx1)2+(ky2ky1)2=k2[(x2x1)2+(y2y1)2]=kPQP'Q' = \sqrt{(kx_2 - kx_1)^2 + (ky_2 - ky_1)^2} = \sqrt{k^2\big[(x_2-x_1)^2 + (y_2-y_1)^2\big]} = k \cdot PQ

every distance stretches by the same factor. The similarity unit's "corresponding sides in constant ratio," rewritten in the language of transformations.

Slopes survive. The image's slope is ky2ky1kx2kx1=y2y1x2x1\dfrac{ky_2 - ky_1}{kx_2 - kx_1} = \dfrac{y_2 - y_1}{x_2 - x_1} — the kk cancels. So lines go to parallel lines (only lines through the center stay put), parallelism is preserved, hence angles are preserved — which is why shape survives.

Example

Center the origin, k=3k = 3: the triangle (1,1)(1, 1), (3,1)(3, 1), (1,2)(1, 2) maps to (3,3)(3, 3), (9,3)(9, 3), (3,6)(3, 6). Each side triples; the area grows by 32=93^2 = 9 — the k2k^2 law, alive and well in coordinates.

For a center other than the origin, the one-line formula is "shift the center to the origin, multiply, shift back":

P=C+k(PC).P' = C + k(P - C).

The spectrum of scale factors

The dilation changes expression with kk:

factor effect
k>1k > 1 enlargement
k=1k = 1 identity (no change)
0<k<10 < k < 1 reduction
k=1k = -1 point symmetry (identical to a 180°180° rotation)
k<0k < 0 enlargement/reduction to the far side of the center

For k<0k < 0, both signs of (kx,ky)(kx, ky) flip together — the image crosses to the opposite side, turned 180°180°. In particular k=1k = -1 preserves size, so it is also a rigid motion — and the table shows the only overlap of dilations and rigid motions (k=±1k = \pm 1): the identity and point symmetry.

Example

Center C(1,2)C(1, 2), k=12k = -\dfrac12: the image of P(5,4)P(5, 4) is

P=C12(PC)=(1,2)12(4,2)=(1,1).P' = C - \frac12(P - C) = (1, 2) - \frac12(4, 2) = (-1, 1).

PP and PP' sit on opposite sides of CC, the image at half the distance — CC cuts PP\overline{PP'} in ratio 2:12 : 1 (check: the 23\frac23 mark from PP to PP' is CC ✓).

Similarity, redefined

Definition (rewritten) — Two figures are similar when some dilation followed by a rigid motion superimposes one exactly onto the other.

As congruence was "superimposable by a rigid motion," similarity is "superimposable by a rigid motion after matching sizes." The similarity unit's definition ("scale it and they're congruent") is now official. The AA, SAS, SSS similarity tests are minimal bundles guaranteeing this superposition, and the similarity ratio kk is precisely the dilation's factor.

Watch out

In a dilation, only lengths scale by kk — angles stay, areas scale by k2k^2, and volumes (for solids) by k3k^3. And the rule (kx,ky)(kx, ky) is valid only for a dilation centered at the origin — for any other center, return to P=C+k(PC)P' = C + k(P - C). These two account for most of this lesson's errors.
