C=90°\angle C = 90°인 직각삼각형에서 예각 θ\theta를 하나 고르자. θ\theta맞은편 변(대변)을 aa, θ\theta붙어 있는 다리(인접변)를 bb, 빗변을 cc라 하면:

sinθ=ac=대변빗변,cosθ=bc=인접변빗변,tanθ=ab=대변인접변.\sin\theta = \frac{a}{c} = \frac{\text{대변}}{\text{빗변}}, \qquad \cos\theta = \frac{b}{c} = \frac{\text{인접변}}{\text{빗변}}, \qquad \tan\theta = \frac{a}{b} = \frac{\text{대변}}{\text{인접변}}.

θ a b c

정리 — 예각 θ\theta가 같은 두 직각삼각형에서 ac\dfrac{a}{c}, bc\dfrac{b}{c}, ab\dfrac{a}{b}의 값은 각각 같다.

닮음에서 대응변의 비는 일정하므로 aa=bb=cc=k\dfrac{a'}{a} = \dfrac{b'}{b} = \dfrac{c'}{c} = k. 그러면

ac=kakc=ac\frac{a'}{c'} = \frac{ka}{kc} = \frac{a}{c}

\blacksquare

θ a a′ c c′ a : c = a′ : c′

θ\theta sinθ\sin\theta cosθ\cos\theta tanθ\tan\theta
30°30° 12\dfrac12 32\dfrac{\sqrt3}{2} 33\dfrac{\sqrt3}{3}
45°45° 22\dfrac{\sqrt2}{2} 22\dfrac{\sqrt2}{2} 11
60°60° 32\dfrac{\sqrt3}{2} 12\dfrac12 3\sqrt3

sin60°=32,cos60°=12,tan60°=31=3.  \sin 60° = \frac{\sqrt3}{2}, \qquad \cos 60° = \frac12, \qquad \tan 60° = \frac{\sqrt3}{1} = \sqrt3. \; ✓

첫째 — tanθ=sinθcosθ\tan\theta = \dfrac{\sin\theta}{\cos\theta}. a/cb/c=ab\dfrac{a/c}{b/c} = \dfrac{a}{b}: 분모의 cc가 지워진다.

둘째 — sin2θ+cos2θ=1\sin^2\theta + \cos^2\theta = 1.

(ac)2+(bc)2=1.\left(\frac{a}{c}\right)^2 + \left(\frac{b}{c}\right)^2 = 1.

셋째 — sin(90°θ)=cosθ\sin(90° - \theta) = \cos\theta. 같은 이유로 cos(90°θ)=sinθ\cos(90° - \theta) = \sin\theta.

cosθ=513\cos\theta = \dfrac{5}{13}인 예각 θ\thetasinθ\sin\thetatanθ\tan\theta를 구하자.

16925=12\sqrt{169 - 25} = 12:

sinθ=1213,tanθ=125.\sin\theta = \frac{12}{13}, \qquad \tan\theta = \frac{12}{5}.

검산 — 항등식으로: sin2θ+cos2θ=144+25169=1\sin^2\theta + \cos^2\theta = \dfrac{144 + 25}{169} = 1 ✓, sinθcosθ=12/135/13=125=tanθ\dfrac{\sin\theta}{\cos\theta} = \dfrac{12/13}{5/13} = \dfrac{12}{5} = \tan\theta ✓.

Goals
  • Define sine, cosine, and tangent as side ratios in a right triangle.
  • Prove by similarity that each ratio is a function of the angle alone, independent of the triangle's size.
  • Fill the 30°30°, 45°45°, 60°60° table from the special right triangles, and derive the basic identities.

One angle determines the shape

Fix one acute angle of a right triangle at 34°34° and the remaining angles are automatic: 56°56° and 90°90°. With all three angles pinned, AA says the shape is completely determined. The sizes vary, but every such triangle is similar to every other — and similar figures share their side ratios.

So a value like "height over hypotenuse" belongs not to any particular triangle but to the angle 34°34° itself. If every angle owns its ratios, we can name them and tabulate them — and that is trigonometry.

The definitions: three ratios

In a right triangle with C=90°\angle C = 90°, pick an acute angle θ\theta. Call the side across from θ\theta (the opposite side) aa, the leg touching θ\theta (the adjacent side) bb, and the hypotenuse cc:

sinθ=ac=oppositehypotenuse,cosθ=bc=adjacenthypotenuse,tanθ=ab=oppositeadjacent.\sin\theta = \frac{a}{c} = \frac{\text{opposite}}{\text{hypotenuse}}, \qquad \cos\theta = \frac{b}{c} = \frac{\text{adjacent}}{\text{hypotenuse}}, \qquad \tan\theta = \frac{a}{b} = \frac{\text{opposite}}{\text{adjacent}}.

θ a b c
The three sides as seen from the acute angle θ — opposite a, adjacent b, hypotenuse c.

Everything is read from θ\theta's seat. Read the same triangle from its other acute angle and opposite and adjacent trade places — and that trade will hand us an identity shortly.

Well-defined: similarity's guarantee

One check hides inside the definition. To speak of "sin34°\sin 34°" at all, every right triangle containing 34°34° must yield the same value.

Theorem — Two right triangles with equal acute angles θ\theta have equal values of ac\dfrac{a}{c}, bc\dfrac{b}{c}, and ab\dfrac{a}{b}.

Proof. The triangles share θ\theta and a right angle, so they are similar by AA. Similar triangles have proportional sides: aa=bb=cc=k\dfrac{a'}{a} = \dfrac{b'}{b} = \dfrac{c'}{c} = k. Then

ac=kakc=ac,\frac{a'}{c'} = \frac{ka}{kc} = \frac{a}{c},

and the other two ratios go the same way. \blacksquare

θ a a′ c c′ a : c = a′ : c′
Two right triangles sharing θ — different sizes, one ratio.

This guarantee is what makes sinθ\sin\theta a function of the angle rather than a property of a triangle. The similarity built last unit is carrying an entire definition on its back here.

Filling the table: the special triangles, promoted

The ratios for 30°30°, 45°45°, 60°60° need no memorizing — read them off last lesson's two triangles. The 45°45° column comes from 1:1:21:1:\sqrt2; the 30°30° and 60°60° columns from 1:3:21:\sqrt3:2:

θ\theta sinθ\sin\theta cosθ\cos\theta tanθ\tan\theta
30°30° 12\dfrac12 32\dfrac{\sqrt3}{2} 33\dfrac{\sqrt3}{3}
45°45° 22\dfrac{\sqrt2}{2} 22\dfrac{\sqrt2}{2} 11
60°60° 32\dfrac{\sqrt3}{2} 12\dfrac12 3\sqrt3
Example

Check the 60°60° row. In the 1:3:21:\sqrt3:2 triangle, the side opposite 60°60° is 3\sqrt3, the adjacent is 11, the hypotenuse 22:

sin60°=32,cos60°=12,tan60°=31=3.  \sin 60° = \frac{\sqrt3}{2}, \qquad \cos 60° = \frac12, \qquad \tan 60° = \frac{\sqrt3}{1} = \sqrt3. \; ✓

tan30°=13\tan 30° = \dfrac{1}{\sqrt3} is written rationalized, 33\dfrac{\sqrt3}{3}.

Read the table down a column: sin\sin grows with the angle and cos\cos shrinks — exactly the picture of tilting a ladder upright, the opposite side stretching while the adjacent one contracts.

Note

Push the angle to its extremes and the table gains its endpoints. Flatten θ\theta to 0°: the opposite side vanishes (sin0°=0\sin 0° = 0) and the adjacent side lies along the hypotenuse (cos0°=1\cos 0° = 1). Stand it up to 90°90°: the reverse, sin90°=1\sin 90° = 1, cos90°=0\cos 90° = 0. And tan90°\tan 90° is undefined — its adjacent side has shrunk to 00.

The three ratios are chained together

Set the three definitions side by side and relations pour out.

First — tanθ=sinθcosθ\tan\theta = \dfrac{\sin\theta}{\cos\theta}. a/cb/c=ab\dfrac{a/c}{b/c} = \dfrac{a}{b}: the cc's cancel.

Second — sin2θ+cos2θ=1\sin^2\theta + \cos^2\theta = 1. Divide the Pythagorean relation a2+b2=c2a^2 + b^2 = c^2 through by c2c^2:

(ac)2+(bc)2=1.\left(\frac{a}{c}\right)^2 + \left(\frac{b}{c}\right)^2 = 1.

The Pythagorean theorem wearing trigonometric clothes — not a new theorem, a new notation for the same one.

Third — sin(90°θ)=cosθ\sin(90° - \theta) = \cos\theta. Read the same triangle from the other acute angle, 90°θ90° - \theta: opposite and adjacent swap. The side opposite 90°θ90° - \theta is precisely θ\theta's adjacent side, so sin(90°θ)=bc=cosθ\sin(90° - \theta) = \dfrac{b}{c} = \cos\theta; likewise cos(90°θ)=sinθ\cos(90° - \theta) = \sin\theta. This is why the table's 30°30° and 60°60° rows mirror each other.

Example

An acute angle θ\theta has cosθ=513\cos\theta = \dfrac{5}{13}. Find sinθ\sin\theta and tanθ\tan\theta.

Build a model right triangle with adjacent 55 and hypotenuse 1313; the remaining leg is 16925=12\sqrt{169 - 25} = 12:

sinθ=1213,tanθ=125.\sin\theta = \frac{12}{13}, \qquad \tan\theta = \frac{12}{5}.

Check with the identities: sin2θ+cos2θ=144+25169=1\sin^2\theta + \cos^2\theta = \dfrac{144 + 25}{169} = 1 ✓, and sinθcosθ=12/135/13=125=tanθ\dfrac{\sin\theta}{\cos\theta} = \dfrac{12/13}{5/13} = \dfrac{12}{5} = \tan\theta ✓. One ratio given, one model triangle drawn, everything else follows — the "build a model" move from the converse proof, returning as a computational tool.

Watch out

Trigonometric ratios are entirely about which angle you read from. Memorize sin\sin as "vertical over hypotenuse" and it collapses the moment the triangle sits differently — it is not the vertical side but θ\theta's opposite, not the horizontal but θ\theta's adjacent. Start every problem by standing at θ\theta and pointing to its opposite and adjacent sides.

Next lesson takes the table into the field — heights and distances you cannot reach, computed from an angle you can measure and one side you can pace off.
