s2+s2=2s2=s2.\sqrt{s^2 + s^2} = \sqrt{2s^2} = s\sqrt2.

45° 45° 1 1 √2

12×32×32=12×18=9.\frac12 \times 3\sqrt2 \times 3\sqrt2 = \frac12 \times 18 = 9.

18+18=36=6\sqrt{18 + 18} = \sqrt{36} = 6 ✓.

(2s)2s2=3s2=s3.\sqrt{(2s)^2 - s^2} = \sqrt{3s^2} = s\sqrt3.

60° 30° 2 1 1 √3

h=32s,[넓이]=12s32s=34s2.h = \frac{\sqrt3}{2}s, \qquad [\text{넓이}] = \frac12 \cdot s \cdot \frac{\sqrt3}{2}s = \frac{\sqrt3}{4}s^2.

34×100=253\dfrac{\sqrt3}{4} \times 100 = 25\sqrt3.

[넓이]=12d1d2=12×6×63=183.[\text{넓이}] = \frac12 d_1 d_2 = \frac12 \times 6 \times 6\sqrt3 = 18\sqrt3.

2×34×36=1832 \times \dfrac{\sqrt3}{4} \times 36 = 18\sqrt3 ✓.

Goals
  • Derive the 45°45°-45°45°-90°90° side ratio 1:1:21:1:\sqrt2 from a square.
  • Derive the 30°30°-60°60°-90°90° side ratio 1:3:21:\sqrt3:2 from an equilateral triangle.
  • Build the equilateral height and area formulas, and spot the two triangles hiding in figures.

Two special right triangles

The Pythagorean theorem runs on any right triangle, but most right triangles that show up in practice are one of just two kinds — halves of the two most symmetric shapes. Cut a square along its diagonal and you get a 45°45°-45°45°-90°90°; cut an equilateral triangle along an altitude and you get a 30°30°-60°60°-90°90°. Compute their side ratios once, store them, and stop re-running the same Pythagorean calculation.

45°-45°-90°: half a square

Cut a square of side ss along a diagonal. What remains is an isosceles right triangle with legs ss, ss — its base angles are equal (isosceles) and sum to 90°90°, so each is 45°45°. The hypotenuse is

s2+s2=2s2=s2.\sqrt{s^2 + s^2} = \sqrt{2s^2} = s\sqrt2.

45° 45° 1 1 √2
A square cut along its diagonal — an isosceles right triangle with sides 1 : 1 : √2.

The ratio is 1:1:21 : 1 : \sqrt2. Last lesson computed a square's diagonal as a problem; from today the ratio is standard equipment — one glimpse of 45°45° and all three sides can be read off.

Starting from the hypotenuse cc instead, each leg is c2=c22\dfrac{c}{\sqrt2} = \dfrac{c\sqrt2}{2} — clear the 2\sqrt2 from the denominator by multiplying top and bottom by 2\sqrt2 (rationalizing).

Example

An isosceles right triangle has hypotenuse 66. Each leg is 62=32\dfrac{6}{\sqrt2} = 3\sqrt2, and the area is

12×32×32=12×18=9.\frac12 \times 3\sqrt2 \times 3\sqrt2 = \frac12 \times 18 = 9.

Check: hypotenuse 18+18=36=6\sqrt{18 + 18} = \sqrt{36} = 6 ✓.

30°-60°-90°: half an equilateral triangle

In an equilateral triangle of side 2s2s, drop an altitude from the apex. The altitude is the isosceles axis (congruence unit), so it bisects the base into ss's and the 60°60° apex angle into 30°30°'s. The half triangle's angles are 30°30°, 60°60°, 90°90°; its sides are the hypotenuse 2s2s (an original side), the short leg ss (half the base), and by Pythagoras

(2s)2s2=3s2=s3.\sqrt{(2s)^2 - s^2} = \sqrt{3s^2} = s\sqrt3.

60° 30° 2 1 1 √3
An equilateral triangle cut by an altitude — each half is a 30-60-90 with sides 1 : √3 : 2.

The ratio is 1:3:21 : \sqrt3 : 2. The seating chart is everything — 11 sits opposite 30°30°, 3\sqrt3 opposite 60°60°, 22 opposite the right angle. That 1<3<21 < \sqrt3 < 2 lines up with 30°<60°<90°30° < 60° < 90° is no accident: it re-confirms "the longer side faces the bigger angle" from the triangle properties unit.

Watch out

The most common error is seating 3\sqrt3 on the hypotenuse. 31.73\sqrt3 \approx 1.73 is less than 22the hypotenuse always takes the 22 seat, and 3\sqrt3 is the long leg, opposite 60°60°. Pair sides with angles before computing anything.

The equilateral triangle's own formulas fall out immediately. A side-ss equilateral triangle has height equal to the half triangle's long leg,

h=32s,[area]=12s32s=34s2.h = \frac{\sqrt3}{2}s, \qquad [\text{area}] = \frac12 \cdot s \cdot \frac{\sqrt3}{2}s = \frac{\sqrt3}{4}s^2.

Example

Equilateral triangle of side 1010: height 32×10=53\dfrac{\sqrt3}{2} \times 10 = 5\sqrt3, area 34×100=253\dfrac{\sqrt3}{4} \times 100 = 25\sqrt3.

Estimating with 31.732\sqrt3 \approx 1.732 gives area 43.3\approx 43.3 — under half the side-1010 square's 100100. But the answer stays 25325\sqrt3: the form with the \sqrt{} intact is the exact value; the decimal is only an approximation.

Spotting the hidden triangle

Neither triangle arrives wearing a name tag. See 45°45° or an isosceles right triangle — reach for 1:1:21:1:\sqrt2. See 30°30°, 60°60°, or anything equilateral — reach for 1:3:21:\sqrt3:2. Often one drawn altitude is what makes the triangle appear.

Example

A rhombus has a 60°60° angle and side 66. Find both diagonals and the area.

The two sides flanking the 60°60° vertex and the short diagonal form an isosceles triangle with a 60°60° apex — the other two angles are 60°60° as well: equilateral. Short diagonal =6= 6.

For the long diagonal, use the rhombus diagonal property (perpendicular bisection) and work half at a time: the half right triangle has hypotenuse 66 and short leg 33 (opposite 30°30°), so its long leg is 333\sqrt3 — long diagonal =63= 6\sqrt3.

[area]=12d1d2=12×6×63=183.[\text{area}] = \frac12 d_1 d_2 = \frac12 \times 6 \times 6\sqrt3 = 18\sqrt3.

Check via two equilateral triangles: 2×34×36=1832 \times \dfrac{\sqrt3}{4} \times 36 = 18\sqrt3 ✓.

Next lesson promotes these two triangles once more — the table of trigonometric ratios for 30°30°, 45°45°, 60°60° is filled by exactly these side ratios.
