DEAB=EFBC=FDCA=k  (닮음비),A=D,  B=E,  C=F\frac{DE}{AB} = \frac{EF}{BC} = \frac{FD}{CA} = k \;(\text{닮음비}), \qquad \angle A = \angle D, \; \angle B = \angle E, \; \angle C = \angle F

a 2a

ABCDEF\triangle ABC \sim \triangle DEF이고 AB=6AB = 6, BC=9BC = 9, DE=10DE = 10이다.

k=DEAB=106=53,k = \frac{DE}{AB} = \frac{10}{6} = \frac53,

EF=BC×53=9×53=15.EF = BC \times \frac53 = 9 \times \frac53 = 15.

ka1+ka2++kan=k(a1+a2++an)ka_1 + ka_2 + \cdots + ka_n = k(a_1 + a_2 + \cdots + a_n)

\blacksquare

Goals
  • Define similarity and read the correspondence that the \sim notation declares.
  • Compute scale factors, and use the constant side ratio and preserved angles.
  • Recognize congruence as similarity with ratio 1:11:1, and judge which figures are "always similar."
  • Prove that the ratio of perimeters equals the scale factor.

What "same shape" means

On the first day of the congruence unit, two equilateral triangles of different sizes stood as the counterexample that disqualified AAA — and we noted that figures with equal angles merely share a shape. Today "same shape" receives its official name.

DefinitionSimilarity

Two figures are similar, written with the symbol \sim, when one can be enlarged or reduced by a constant factor to become congruent to the other. The ratio of corresponding side lengths is the scale factor (similarity ratio).

The moment you write ABCDEF\triangle ABC \sim \triangle DEF, the congruence-era convention fires again — the letter order declares the correspondence: ADA \leftrightarrow D, BEB \leftrightarrow E, CFC \leftrightarrow F. Two facts follow straight from the definition. Scaling multiplies every length by the same factor kk, so

DEAB=EFBC=FDCA=k  (the scale factor),A=D,  B=E,  C=F\frac{DE}{AB} = \frac{EF}{BC} = \frac{FD}{CA} = k \;(\text{the scale factor}), \qquad \angle A = \angle D, \; \angle B = \angle E, \; \angle C = \angle F

— corresponding sides share one ratio (that common value is the scale factor), and corresponding angles are preserved (magnification leaves an opening's spread unchanged).

a 2a
Two triangles at ratio 1 : 2 — every side doubles, no angle moves.

With k=1k = 1 there is no scaling at all: congruence is similarity with ratio 1:11:1 — the same inclusive design that filed squares under rectangles, letting every similarity theorem flow down to congruent figures automatically.

Working the scale factor

Example 1 · Read the correspondence, find the side

ABCDEF\triangle ABC \sim \triangle DEF with AB=6AB = 6, BC=9BC = 9, DE=10DE = 10. Find EFEF.

Solution. The letter order pairs ABDEAB \leftrightarrow DE and BCEFBC \leftrightarrow EF. The scale factor is

k=DEAB=106=53,k = \frac{DE}{AB} = \frac{10}{6} = \frac53,

and every pair of corresponding sides shares it:

EF=BC×53=9×53=15.EF = BC \times \frac53 = 9 \times \frac53 = 15.

Check the constancy: 106=159=53\frac{10}{6} = \frac{15}{9} = \frac53 ✓. Which sides pair up is decided not by the picture but by the letters — the convention built in the congruence unit, unchanged.

What is "always" similar

Any two equilateral triangles are similar — all angles are 60°60°, and one factor aligns the sides. Likewise any two circles, any two squares, any two regular polygons of the same kind: figures whose only degree of freedom is size.

Two rectangles, by contrast, may fail: all eight angles are 90°90°, but a 1:21:2 rectangle and a 1:51:5 rectangle overlap under no magnification — equal angles with unequal side ratios is not similarity. Two isosceles triangles with different apex angles are strangers too. The always-similar question reduces to one test: once size is removed, does any freedom of shape remain?

Watch out

Dropping the correspondence order is the classic similarity slip — ABCDEF\triangle ABC \sim \triangle DEF and ABCEFD\triangle ABC \sim \triangle EFD are different declarations. And the scale factor has a direction: if it is 53\frac53 from ABC\triangle ABC to DEF\triangle DEF, it is 35\frac35 the other way. Ratio form or fraction form, always check the sentence for which figure is the reference.

Ratio of perimeters = scale factor

Theorem — Two similar polygons with scale factor kk have perimeters in the ratio kk.

Proof. Let the first polygon's sides be a1,a2,,ana_1, a_2, \ldots, a_n; the corresponding sides are ka1,ka2,,kanka_1, ka_2, \ldots, ka_n. The perimeter is

ka1+ka2++kan=k(a1+a2++an)ka_1 + ka_2 + \cdots + ka_n = k(a_1 + a_2 + \cdots + a_n)

— the distributive law lifts the kk out whole. \blacksquare

Quantities born of length (like perimeter) ride the factor once. Area does not — scaling stretches both directions, so area rides kk twice (k2k^2). The formal proof and its applications belong to this unit's final lesson.

Note

The remaining question powers this whole unit: how do we test triangles for similarity? As congruence had SSS, SAS, ASA, similarity has its own conditions — and, as the AAA counterexample foretold, the angle-side conditions are far looser. Next lesson erects all three: AA, SAS, and SSS.
